To be honest i dont get the critique of your analysis. I am sure alternatives can show different things, but your analysis did its job? Yes, online elo can be meaningless in certain instances, but that was true earlier before. All your analysis showed, was that there is no increase in the difference of the performance prediction between online and offline performance, right?

Just a thought: Can you use a chess computer to detect "critical moments" in a game? If yes, can you use online/offline rating to predict which players make the right choices in critical moments?

I still have the same question as on X concerning the best moves%: as high rated players have higher chance playing against lower level player, shouldn't this show up in the diagram about average best moves during the game (given it makes a difference if you play lower level players)?

A seriously crushing defeat: In November, 1896 to January, 1897 Steinitz played a return match with Lasker in Moscow, but won only 2 games, drawing 5, and losing 10.[42] This was the last world chess championship match for eleven years. Shortly after the match, Steinitz had a mental breakdown and was confined for 40 days in a Moscow sanatorium, where he played chess with the inmates.

I think most people agree that Danya is clean and he's one of the guys that gets the strongest from online and in shorter time control. It looks like Fabi is the other way around. If we got Danya and Fabi to play a ton of games from 10+2 over the board to 1+1 online or however low Fabi wants to go I think we would see that the players' strength can vary a lot depending on the circumstances
@harryarmstrong5728
@harryarmstrong5728 8 ай бұрын
I think part of Danya’s magic in particular is speed chess with NO increment, same as Hikaru. The skills needed to win with no increment go beyond chess it seems to me. I am not saying they’re on the level of pro StarCraft players, but there is some element of mechanical skill with a mouse on top of just being good at the game.

In my European town in the 90s, there was 1 IM, and that's the best we've got. A major difficulty back then wasn't just books, but opponents: Playing an Im is like playing against a wall until you are over 2000, but if you get to, say, 1800, games against the most casual players were also just pointless, as they'd drop a piece every other move. Playing computers didn't help either, as they inhumane, and their biggest value was just punishing you for tactical mistakes. Just the availability of appropriately leveled opponents, day and night, Was a huge deal, even without coaching.

Regarding the statistics of cheating there are three very important things to keep in mind: - Distinguish the population level from a potential group of cheaters. Proving that rating is consistent in the population does not show there are no cheaters. These are two completely different questions and even if there were hundreds of notorious cheaters, they would probably not skew the population level statistics by a lot. - Avoid cherry picking at all costs. Given a large enough sample (online chess is huge), outliers that look crazy are bound to happen just by the sheer volume of the data. If you do not account for the full data when making the case for an outlier to be unlikely, your case is useless. - You can not "play with the numbers and prove everything". The numbers are neutral to what you try to prove. Some people have just mastered lying with statistics (even to themselves). Statistics is hard, even for the smartest people. But it can be increadibly helpful. On another key point I agree with Fabi: We should focus on preventing cheating, not on trying to call out individuals. Fight the bad behavior, not the people. (That is not to say that there shouldn't be consequences if someone is actually caught with clear evidence).

One of these days professional chess is gonna self-implode because every top player is suspicious of everyone. Just the past year has been crazy considering how many top players have accused other players of cheating. And chess organisers are too slow or unwilling to prevent and deal with cheating in a serious way (which obviously does happen)

These online Blitz games have such a rating disparity because of one simple concept: time. If you are playing 3|0 your opponent can simply move faster than you to gain a significant advantage. If you don't move fast enough you might time out, if you move too fast to keep up you might blunder. The person who moves much faster with a reasonable degree of accuracy in their moves will be far more successful than a guy who moves slower with higher accuracy. This advantage is then compounded further when you consider that a person can easily play dozens of blitz games in a single day

While I obviously agree that young players should never cheat, at any level, I don’t agree that Hans deserves a barrage of shit for the rest of his life and career. Kids do make mistakes, I would hate to be locked up for life for the few books I shop-lifted when I was young. Should Hans be determined to be cheating now obviously that’s another matter, but I do think people can learn from their mistakes, especially if made while they are young and that he has already served well as an example by having his dirty laundry dragged out for the entire world to see!

So Kramnik says that it wasn't an accusation -- while doubling, tripling, then quadrupling down on his supposedly unassailable math showing that Hikaru's streak was mathematically impossible. I think it is pretty safe to call him out -- the repeated insistence that the streaks were mathematically impossible make it 💯% clear that it was an accusation. (And not only that it was an accusation, but that he is absolutely sure that Hikaru's performance was not possible.)

With all due respect to Fabi it is exceedingly rare for somebody at the top of a game, any game, to be a good teacher, teaching is an entirely different discipline to playing in fact, although obviously being a strong player is prerequisite to being able to teach at all. My dream pick for a coach would be Danya, he has a way of explaining the board and opening theory especially that just entirely demystifies it, and a quiver of very useful levers for comprehending general strategy over all.

I think a good coach, not only in chess, MUST care deeply about their student's success. For someone truly passionate about coaching, the most rewarding feeling is seeing your student succeed and grow. And your approach will completely change depending on their goals and existing skills. Probably in general though, a coach can help guide and inspire the student to work by themselves. All chess learning is ultimately self learning through solving problems, calculation and analyzing your mistakes.
