Please consider supporting the project each week with a few dollars / brupeg
Getting closer to Brupeg starting up on our new electrical system. With one week until Damon arrives, we are finishing all the prep so he can get straight into the wiring.
We need to get our aluminium battery box completed and bolted down, the batteries need to be fitted to the box, we need to install the fuses, switches and Victron components that connects it all together and the new controls on our alternator to charge the massive 30kwh lithium bank Brupeg now has.
Thank you everyone for all your support, thank you for making this possible!

Hope you put something between the cross support bar and those battery terminals. In heavy seas, if the lower battery were to bounce and touch or the top battery from impact to a wave, bent that bar down, the terminal could spot weld to the bar and almost certainly cause a fire if there is not an internal fuse inside the battery. I'd have moved the bars so there is no chance of the terminal touching it.

Love the channel! As a live-aboard sailor, I can say that much of the work you are doing now is spot-on. For example, we have the same Balmar regulator and it has been running error-free for 13 years. It's like programming a 1960s computer but it works! Thanks for sharing your journey.

The rocking of your ship will cause the batteries to move in that box and they will end up rubbing against the threaded rods. That will cut into the battery's plastic cases which could cause a short circuit that would lead to problems. Better to fix it now than later... But what do I know? I'm on the other side of the world... Good Luck and best wishes, Pinworthy

. . . . and with enough movement the positive and negative terminals on each battery could contact the aluminum cross beams . . . . Add electrical insulator tape wrap just in case

Whilst the lithium batteries do not vent any gases, they can go into thermal runaway which can be caused by charger overheating or internal construction failure. In either case the gases are very toxic and at high pressure and very hot (1400 deg C). Please check that the aluminium case and nylon connectors will provide sufficient protection - the box will probably need thermal insulation. General air ventilation will be required as they can get hot when charging.

I do a very similar copper bar connection on very large car stereo equipment all the, for mine I flatten copper pipe to get the copper buzz bar and when everything is assembled and working I rattle can clear coat all of the copper and connections to prevent corrosion. It lasts for years with regular maintenance without any corrosion problems outdoors in an engine bay and never produces heat with 250amps and more at 16 volts. Good long term solution! Also I vote yes for a bigger Brupeg in the future!!!???

you should use a thin piece of plastic above the the battery terminals incase a battery comes loose or just wiring it up. I imagine it would be square and span the entire aluminum shelf held in place by a couple rivets and some adhesive. . Having those posts accidentally touching the aluminum above would be quite the arc.

Also, have you kept diagrams of pipe work etc so that if anything should happen to you at sea others will have some ideal. Also, what about some nameplates, valve descriptors etc. just a thought as everything’s fresh now but you don’t want to have a problem down the track. Also, please convey everyone’s best wishes to Duncan, hope he has a fast recovery because I’d love to have a beer with Duncan cause Duncan’s me mate. Catch ya next week guys, have a good one

wiring the batteries will be much fun... in which way the cables come out of the box?
@kaharry055
@kaharry055 8 күн бұрын
Just a suggestion in case you haven’t already done so, you could slip lengths of tube (garden hose or clear tube) over each of the threaded rods which hold/clamp down the lithium batteries to prevent the thread chaffing the battery case with movement over time. As the batteries seem to be secured in the centre there could be potential for them to wriggle with the movement of the boat. Also did I miss where the cables are going to go through the battery box to connect everything up?
@ProjectBrupeg
@ProjectBrupeg 8 күн бұрын
You didn’t miss anything, the cable glands haven’t been fitted yet, was waiting until Damon is here to be sure he is happy with gland layout before we cut the holes for them. Chafe won’t be an issue with these clamps. If the batteries are moving such that the threads can ever touch the batteries we haven’t done them up. Once done up the batteries cannot and won’t move.

Interesting, the battery box. Very nice as per most all your work. However, how do you plan to maintain the terminals on the batteries? We have 4 x 200 amp-hr 12vdc on our 43' trawler. I check the battery terminals every 6 month and have found somewhat loose bolt connections, even though the OEM (stainless) lock washers are used. The threads are greased with no-alox so no locktight used for better electrical connection. Torque down again and cross fingers. I also check with a non-contact thermal gun to see if any connections are heating during high current conditions. ALSO, please bond the metal battery case to the DC ground. Or, check that the metal bolts connecting the battery case to the floor are a good electrical connection back to the common DC / AC ground point. Good luck!

Nice work with the battery install, isn't it great that they are a quarter of the weight of lead acid. Re stainless fasteners into alloy - although you put nylon washers to insulate the head of the screw from the alloy there is still a risk of corrosion from the thread piercing the alloy.. We use a very good product in NZ called Duralac. This is a lanolin-based epoxy sealant that sets hard and totally insulates the whole fastener from the alloy. Should be available in Aus - worth a Google

Remember the Chockfast dam imbroglio? We can all have a laugh now.... Inline 6 engines are naturally very smooth - in fact smoother than a V8. Just because a V8 has more cylinders doesn't make it smoother. The characteristic V8 beat is demonstrating the issue. I can't be bothered going into it. Inline 6 has perfect primary and secondary balance - the only real issue with them being the long crankshaft which can be source of torsional vibration under high load at certain RPM but the large mass of the front torsional vibration damper controls that. Plenty of cat in this vid. I like that cat. I feel cat will adapt well to a life at sea. It might take a bit of time. I'd suggest letting cat go where cat wants to go when underway at first. There could be a few 'sick up' incidents but soon enough Cat will find a nice hidie-hole and will eventually become a fully fledged bold sea cat, sitting on charts in rough weather while you're trying to read them and doing all the annoying things we love to hate about them.

16:55 I, and my coworkers, can attest that no, a bigger boat won't help. In fact, the bigger the boat, the more of those fiddly little spaces can be crammed in. (We have done many a repair job on a >300m container vessels. In those spaces. That the path to, from the gangway, involves a number of other such.) I would curse all marine engineers for designing such, but if they didn't, my income would drastically drop.
