Thank you so much Will… I just got one of these shunts and could not figure out if you had to flip something or maneuver something to capture and hold the small red wire to the shunt . No where in the instructions or anyone else online actually showed the small wire hook up in detail.. YOU DID… just push it in and give it a twist… simple .. it’s my first system build and I’m afraid sometimes of apparently simple things as I tend to overthink them… That has bothered me for a week…now I know… your reviews and vids have been a big help in picking my gear for my system… you found your calling earlier in life than most…👍

Check the fuses in the red power leads. There was a period of time where the Victron supplied fuse had enough resistance to yield a voltage drop across it causing a low voltage reading when checked against my calibrated Fluke DMM. The fuse issue was documented on the Victron community pages. IIRC, the fuse subject may have made it to your forum, too. A larger amp rating fuse reduced the voltage drop.

We put a Victron complete system in our adventure van and it is amazing. Works perfect with no hiccups. The shunt has to be zero current calibrated exactly or the battery percentage readings will drift away from accurate. Our LifeBlue batteries have Bluetooth built into them so I know the exact battery level at any time. The shunt doesn’t track battery percentage exactly but it is in the ballpark pretty well if calibrated correctly.
@VanLifeByTheRiver
@VanLifeByTheRiver 3 жыл бұрын
@@andrewswingler Andy, those are definitely excellent questions. It did puzzle me too as to why it needs to be calibrated for zero current. For the installation of our adventure van, I had individual battery cutoffs and solar charger cutoffs installed which makes it easy to have zero current going through the shunt. I also had to make small adjustments to the battery capacity settings (in the Victron Connect app) to get the shunt to be more accurate on deeper draw downs of our batteries. Having the Bluetooth built into the LifeBlue batteries has been very useful in fine tuning things so that the shunt reflects more accurately what is going on. Without the Bluetooth, we would be getting a fairly close reading using the shunt readout but not exact. I have found that having such a relatively larger battery bank in our van has made knowing the exact battery percentage to be less important than if we had a smaller reserve but our case is not typical. I wish I had the technical answers you seek but I have not researched any of this. Our Victron system has been an amazing set it and forget it experience. It has worked flawlessly.

The shunt is the pretty much the same as the one that comes in the BMV-712 battery monitor. For your golfcart, you could use the BMV-712's display to monitor SOC while you're driving, instead of using the smartphone app. The BMV also has BT, so you still get the same functionality as the smartshunt anyway.

I've had a linked pair of Victron Multiplus(s), BMV-702 Gauge with shunt and bluetooth dongle for 5 or 6 years. We get a very low feed-in-tariff here, so my 24v 1000ah LiFePo4 batteries are charged daily from grid connected solar and at night a timer disconnects the grid power and the inverter takes over using it's UPS function, although I don't tax it with the demands of the oven or a/c. Looks like the smartshunt has a ve direct port, same as the BMV, Blue/SmartSolar charge controllers, etc. You can read that data with an arduino/similar. I'm not sure about writing to it. Ex: I can read data from my chinese smart bms and read data from my smartsolar charge controller with a single arduino, but never got around to figuring out how to write "disable charging" to the smartsolar for example. That would have been really cool as I could have leveraged the temperature readings or cell voltage readings as a redundancy to the BMS protection. And you could cut out some victron add-ons this way. In any event it's possible to parse data, repackage it, and serve it over bluetooth (ESP32 instead of arduino), host a webserver, push it to firebase, whatever you want. I was having an issue with a cell running away and was able to write some simple code to detect when the charge controller entered float and then post all the individual cell voltages, temps, and charge current just prior to float. All to firebase so I can view anywhere, and digest with a mobile app I wrote.

Please explain with one of your recommended all in one 24volts (MPP or Growatt) proper setup for wiring of Step down 24-12v converter to WFCO and in from shore power to WFCO 30 amp AC/DC panel. The extension cord deal in other videos not helping us RV’ers in this aspect. Greatly appreciate all your information you give.

Hi Will, have you ever reviewed a 12-24V battery to battery charger (such as those made by Victron). I'm thinking of creating a 24V system in an RV but would like to retain charging ability from the alternator. Living in the UK we can't rely just on solar!

If you think the Victron app is neat, you should see what you can do with an all-Victron system with all the integrations and the CCGX or Venus GX sending data to their VRM site. All kinds of long-term graphs and trends. I can watch my fridge toggle on and off to see if it's keeping up well when the outside temperatures are high.

Hey brother, you're a super hero in the solar world. So honest, raw, and knowledgeable. ****A new article came out today saying capsaicin increases solar panels efficiency, a chemical in chili. If you make a video on that you'll become an Ultra Elite Super Hero 🤣

Perhaps you could wade through the entire Victron range? Not the cheapest of kit but generally seems to work well. My PV/Backup system is all Victron except for PV's and batteries. I love the BT connectivity that much of their kit provides!

I have one of these Will, and I am using the free code that Victron provide on their site with a raspberry pi to get that Cerbo GX setup cheaper. Its something you should look into if you haven't already. I need to do a rebuild of it with a better pi but it is an awesome little setup.

@@WillProwse Check out "Thornwave Labs" monitors when you have a chance Will, I haven't seen anyone with your level of knowledge dive into those. They maybe don't make sense for those trying to stay within the victron eco system but they seem to be better at first glance. The bluetooth shunt they offer has a built in relay and is expandable with various sensors which looks very interesting for certain projects.

@@Sebastian-xv1qd They also provide the GX code for free on their website so you could build your own using a simple Raspberry Pi setup. Its nice to see that, and although they may lose out a little on the Cerbo sales they will surely sell more of their other kit to go with it. I love the achieved VRM log you can store on their website with all of your historic data.

Thanks Dexter! I do have one question... in my Outback Flexmax 80 manual, it says to always remove the positive lead first and always connect it last. This is supposed to prevent any communication chips/lines becoming the DC return path to the battery, damaging them. Have you heard of this before, as it is the opposite of car battery connection order?

Great Video as always Will! Apologies for the newbie question. With shunts, will they measure any battery discharge from sitting in storage or will I need to reset the shunt with a full discharge if it's been sitting around a while? My intended application is for a DIY solar generator for home backup use.

Hi will ,I love your videos ,I’m planning to install solar on my boat so your stuff is really helpful.I have some questions though...I want to install such a shunt,but victory is making also a 1000A one ,how do I choose and with 2 batteries bank (engine & services ) if I want to monitor both which this smart shunt allows can i still mesure the mid point voltage as my batteries are series/ parallèles achieve 24V ? Does the BMV 712 becomes redundant with this shunt of do you recommend to have it ? Thanks and keep up the good work. Nick
