Some people say Kikiyama created Yume Nikki in order to understand why his ex committed suicide. I think he just ended up more confused.

So sad, a girl that never have a life in the reality, a girl that ever dream nighmares, and to the ending, ow man, poor girl.

Now I feel sad for spoiling this ending for me. ;_; Somehow I knew the ending would be like this though. Either she would finally exit her room or she would commit suicide. Something about her aimless way of walking around, and that one room where the people all ignored her...it made me feel like something was wrong. :(

The ending is perfect, it's exactly what you would expect a person with that kind of mental dissorder (madotsuki) will do. The "it was a DREAM LOL" sounds more like an easy happy ending way of finishing the game.

I was really surprised at the ending. I thought that by collecting the effects, and conquering her fears in a way would enable her with the courage to leave her room. In the end, she did leave her room in a way. But I guess she wanted to continue to live in her dreams.

When I reached the end I spent a few minutes, saddened... I didnt want to go to the edge.. I didnt want to press Z.. after a few moments of convincing myself to do so.. I did and she jumped from the edge. The thoughts going through my mind were very sad. I actually shed tear for it.. I loved this game

I never played the game, and watching many videos on it already makes me want to cry about this...

right, and when you die in a dream, your soul triggers a failsafe which sends you hurtling back to your body. some dreams let up in what seems like a minute, some in what seems to be years. all we know is, this is just another step through her adventures. it may be the end of them, but it may not, and no-one really knows. many have theories, but none know for sure.

This is a happy ending cuz the jellyfish angels are there and her eyes are closed so maybe they were 2 layers of her dream she thought she woke up and people say if you die in your dream you wake up so it makes sense why she commited suicide

@anihilator100 ...for example hat and scarf may mean that she lives in a town (or wherever she lives) where's alot of snow, cold etc. OR that her life was full of cold and sadness. Severed head may mean that she was helpless... She couldn't do anything, that her life wasn't easy... Madotsuki story can be interpreted in many many ways, and we will never 100% sure what Mado life was like...

@PrincessNinjato To get the stairs to appear in the first place, the eggs must all be collected and placed in that central dream lobby. Where they are placed makes no difference; they'll rearrange themselves as you see from the video. Aside from the ladder's presence, there is no other change to normal gameplay. You still cannot exit the door while awake. Saving, sleeping, using objects are all still possible.

It looks more like a key instead of a keyhole, but it still means the same thing: Setting herself free.

This reminded me of Serial Experiments Lain.

I felt the same. As soon as I stepped outside I knew what was going to happen but I couldn't press the button and let her jump. When I finally did the music and imaginary made me cry.

@Kyogrerok Well, Doom mods can be about things other than shooting stuff,. I played a Doom mod called Unloved that had the theme of the protagonist slowly going insane, but he didn't kill himself. His fate was previously left unknown, but the creator is working on a sequel picking right up where the original left off. Yes, there was still lots of shooting stuff going on, but it had the theme of this game without the disappointing ending and with real gameplay to get to the ending.

i think one thing in this game is very great, the fact it doesn't have any speaking or text or something like that in it. it just leaves everything to your own imagination.

part two of my view on the game: the jellyfish. the Jellyfish are gods of life and death, who share their power. they are best of friends. when you enter the dream world, your soul drifts off to another universe. mado's happens to be the dwelling of the jellyfish. the younger brother mereley creates a path for her to follow, the elder brother sends her into the maze of teleportation. the jellyfish have been sitting, scrying, watching this great woman's progress through their world. see part 3

@Hazeleyedtaurus This is a very accurate way of thinking of this ending. Keep in mind the elements in the game - the locations, characters, even the music. For example, some fan speculations say that Masada was once Madotsuki's piano teacher that died from a drug overdose, or "crash", symbolizing the spaceship crashing. Some people think FACE is symbolism for rape. Her background, judging on those speculations, interprets a very depressing theme, leading to a morbid ending at best.

When it was about time for her to jump, I climbed on the stairs thing....but hesitated to press the button. After 10 seconds, I came back to her room, to check if she really won't open this damn door. Yet I tried multiple times, she wouldn't open it, took it that she already made a choice about it, that there was nothing to do except from jumping....

she is a "Hikikomori", a person who basically isolates themselves from the world in their homes. They will come out at night once and a while to buy food. that's it.

I think every door is one year of mado life, in there, you can find "story" of her life told by dreams where you have to understand all symbolism there. As someone said, these 24 effects may have something in common with clock hours. Maybe that symbolizes all her...emotions, what she felt during her everyday life, that might be also a hint about her real life world... (continued in next comment)

@ Atma505 This is how I see it: After seeing how messed up her dreams are and having all of her "Fears" (The powers may be her fears ) in the "Hub world", She can't control her feelings as a shut-in ( Which I think she is), And decided that it was the only way out. Of course, with the Bloodstain looking like a key, The suicide could have been a way she knew to set herself free from the nightmares. But that's just how I see it.

I'm glad you said that. That makes the ending of the game A LOT better for me. (although it does not mean I condone suicide in any way, I hate the idea of it)

Also its the end that her own mind is telling her to chose, if I remember right this bloodstein appeard during one of the trips in dreams. Cant remember where exacly, but I remembered shape because was trying to interact with it somehow and wondered why its there when fail.

@sirfragalot92 Not everyone wants to play games involving nothing but shooting stuff. Some people want to play games for the storyline, or to evoke a certain feeling inside them. Some people relate to Madotsuki in the video. She likely went insane and killed herself, which can hit pretty close to home for some. Some people like certain types of games, others don't.

my view on the whole thing: Mado was confined to her room for some reason. with nothing to entertain her, she ended up sleeping a lot. eventually, she learned what was a dream and what wasn't. In these lucid dreams, she began exploring some things. when she looked around, she found some special characters which gave her gifts of power. time passed, and she had collected all the aspects of her dream world, and explored the whole thing. she had nothing left to do, so she killed herself. see part 2

I noticed during the "working...please wait" screen, there's no music. It's almost like the game knows what's about to happen...that, or it's a glitch.

Mine theory of whole game: Madotsuki is highly depressed and (Everybody know) Hikikomori. She wants to go ''outsideworld'', but is too nervous to do it. So she went to her dreams to search herself. Main think in yume nikki is collecting effects. Those are scattered parts of her self-esteem, feelings and memories. In the end, madotsuki brings all effects to the nexus wich symbolizes her mind. There is one hole in my theory. Why madotsuki did suicide? Sorry my bad english.

Some very good points there sir. Perhaps as you mentioned, each character in her dream world is a representation of her woes and desires. The ourple dressed schoolgirls could've been past bullies. The Earthbound-ish moments could indicate that her only form of entertainment while awake was playing Earthbound on a limited cable TV. In the end, we can conclude that this is the story of a hikkikomori who's been through so much pain and misery in her life, that her mind became insane and...you know

I don't know alot about the theory of this game but the one I've heard that I like the most is the people outside made her very scared of the world so she stayed inside with her dreams and the people she created in her dreams so when she finished with it she saw they was nothing left for her and so she jumped so she could stay in her dreams forever. I'm not saying this is true just that this is the theory that I like the most.

As far as I know, it's the only ending to the game. I don't know if there have been any upgrades since the video was made. Who knows?

@CarefreeCat Okay, well, if the key would symbolize setting herself free, and every character has the same bloodstain, the most logical explanation I can think of is that she is freeing herself from those people/things, perhaps they are her fears, considering Uboa and whatever the girl with the multiple appendages is. Or, we could all just be taking this way to far and the same bloodstains could just be the programmer being too lazy. But those are just my thoughts.

part 3 of my view on the game: when madotsuki kills herself, the jellyfish come to her world to see her off into the next reality, and tell her many truths. when they come to the site of her death, they communicate to her soul, telling her all about this world, how they were watching, of the twisted evil of uboa, of the old-as-existence hall of lost souls, of the infected land of the white desert, and so on. they then send her off to wake from her greater dream as... who knows? urotsuki? yomika?

NOTE: If you about to be scarred for life from this, I guarentee you'll feel much better when you se the alternitive ending.

So one theory goes. However, there's a ton of different, equally possible theories.

This isn't a very popular theory, but some poeple say that Madotsuki is an apocalypse survivor. Therefore, she couldn't get get help because every psychiatrist on the planet was dead.

Well...I'm really not sure what to think. The only theories I automatically discard are the ones that talk about a dream-inside-a-dream thing. The squids are just random screen decorations for the ending credits. About all the theories that claim lil Mado was raped or has some kind of sexual identity issue...might be. All I have to say is, I think the fact that she killed herself AFTER collecting all the effects has to mean something. Like she felt she'd seen all there was to see or something...

I'm assuming she dreamed the whole thing, because she might just go through everything single dream she had and even part of her memories, she probably also had nightmares, so my theory is that she didn't die when she jumped down, I think she's still dreaming.

i prefer for this ending to be real, that she really died, but theres a HUGE evidence that this was all a dream: she never drinks eats or pees! What kind of person can survive like that in "the real world"? Oh, and those stairs appearing out of nowhere... nuff evidences

I'm not sure that I think her suicide was metaphorical at all. The first reason being that she wakes herself up. The second thing is that you'll notice the active environment around her. The flickering TV and the daylight outside are good signs that she's actually in the real world. It's my belief that she did all the things she did, but it was to no avail and she realized that. Having no escape from her dreams and situation, she finds peace in the only way possible. Thoughts?

Where did the stairs come from? For one they can't fit through the front door in the first place. Why are there jellyfish, when those are only products of her dream? The jellyfishes surrounding her bloodstain could be because she lives by the sea, perhaps. But where the heck to the stairs come from? It has to still be a dream. I have no idea what to think of this game and Mado's life. Does she live in a post-apocalyptic world? Was she raped? Is she pregnant? We probably won't ever know.
