Hello Lee, your series on BaseCamp is really helpful, thank you for taking the time! I do have a question if you don’t mind. If you had transferred the route to your sat nav with the cafe stop that you had inserted in the early part of the video, and you decided that you didn’t want to stop for the cafe and just carry on the main route, would your Garmin keep on trying to get you to do a u-turn to force you to the cafe, or would it just re-calculate and carry on with the main route?

So clear and easy to understand. I have two questions. 1) I know there are limits in shaping and waypoints. Could you confirm and are the limits in Basecamp or related to my GPS unit (Zumo 396)? and what happens if I go over the limit?
@1983lparker
@1983lparker 4 жыл бұрын
As far as I'm aware the only limits on shaping and waypoint numbers are on the older 550 style units. I sometimes use hundreds of points in a route if the route is running through a city for instance where there are numerous different routes available for the zumo to take , whereas in countryside or on a Moroccan trail the number of points can be minimal as the zumo only has maybe one or two roads to choose from to find a route from point to point.

@@1983lparker Someone from Garmin replied to me (I was surprised;) saying that Zumo 396 has a limit of 30 waypoints and 125 shaping points per route, which doesn't sound like a lot to me for a newer model.

@@sylviemorissette6781 no nor to me, I can't say on the new 6 ending units as I haven't used one but is be very surprised if it's limited to 125. Just try it by making up a random quick route of 200 points and sending it over. 125 points in my eyes is around 125/150 miles long route.

@@1983lparker I opened a new route in BC and inserted 220 points on 103 miles (that I presumed to be shaping points except from start and end). Once imported Zumo did split my route in 3 parts saying "has more than 29 via pts. Route was split into 3 trips". I rechecked the route and turns out that every points were alerting (so via points). I changed all except a few at the beginning and end to "not alerting" and the route was not split this time and seemed fine. Properties: Pts: 220 Via Pts: 91 distance: 103. Not sure why so many via pts since almost all non alerting I would guess Garmin gives limits to make sure we do not overload unit's processing capacities. Thank you again!

Thanks for the video. Very useful. If you deviate from the route due to unexpected road block, does it take you to the next nearest shaping point? What if the deviation takes you past say two shaping points?

Well done. Only one question till now. When i am planning my route, all shaping points are by default on "alert" mode so its extremely boring to switch one by one to nonAlert. Any suggestions?

Ιωάννης Παπαφάνης hold your CTRL key down whilst left clicking on the ones you want to change to non alert..... That should do it. Cheers

2) Can my GPS ignore the shaping and waypoints and if so is it due to the gps setting (fastest route). I was told to leave it at that setting and put more waypoints but it seems to send my straight to the highway sometimes and skip the planned route.
@1983lparker
@1983lparker 4 жыл бұрын
Good morning, first of all make sure Basecamp and zumo are married together using the same settings as this is the number 1 problem for zumo not following a pre planned route (see video 1) and the number 2 problem is whichever you use ,either waypoint or shaping point is to have enough of them in your route to force the zumo onto the roads you want. You will find that the zumo tends to jump onto motorways more when there is a motorway nearby + not enough shaping points are on the road you wish to ride on. In comparison to that if you were in a place where not many other roads exist, the zumo wouldn't have as many options to choose from the figure out the fastest route. I leave my zumo set to fastest route all the time. You do need to understand that the zumo calculates and thinks that EVERY shaping or waypoint is a little route as far as the zumo is concerned so if there is a quicker way from waypoint to waypoint it will take it, hence why the more shaping points you put on a road the less likely it will be to deviate from that road as it is constantly recalculating without you even knowing it.

@@1983lparker Thank you so much. I ride with a group and I think maybe some of the other riders do not put enough points on their routes. i will review and modify them before importing to my Zumo. I have watched all your videos now (i think) and will do it again; so much to learn.

Got a big trip to France coming up,wonder if you think my way is ok,all i do is create a new file add the start and finish with a way point,then create a route using selected waypoints ,to add any shaping points i just put them in as waypoints add them to the route then right click and change the ones i dont want to be alerted to into shaping points,i also cross reference the coordinates into google and zoom in to double check,am i missing anything,good instructions by the way
@1983lparker
@1983lparker 7 жыл бұрын
P Matty as long as your zooming in on basecamp to street level to make sure your point is exactly correct then your way is fine. when transfered to the zumo I would load each route you've transfered up and cross match the distances from basecamp with the recalculated route on zumo. if they are near enough the same to within say a mile the route got recalculated fine and you put enough shaping points in. if there's a mileage difference re check the route as zumo has sent it off course somewhere

Yes i did have one situation where i had a stop going down and a stop coming back at the same services for fuel,but in this case would you believe it the actual fuel stop was on one side of the services but actually split down the middle for traffic from either direction,this was sending me up the motorway back down the other side to the first waypoint,took me a bit to get my head around the mileage difference,another way i do it is go to google,zoom in,right click,get the coordinates,put a new shaping point in somwhere near on basecamp then copy the coordinates from google into the new waypoint and rename if needed,thanks

What about stripping waypoints on transfere to zumo?
@1983lparker

I don't use waypoints and im not sure you can strip them as they are fixed points that stay in your zumo and BC until you delete them manually.

@@corecop what you want to know about them? Strip them out and you will get less info on your screen but the same info is sent to the zumo. It's more for the user's screen not to be clogged up if your using them as shapers and not actual poi's. 👍
