Steaming up an Accucraft Shay locomotive on the White Horse railway. This superb loco has been radio controlled and even has working lights.

I love the Shay-type locomotive. Just so small and powerful for their size.

There's four different classes of Shay. This one's a Class-A - two trucks, two cylinders. Unlike the other classes these weren't actually that powerful, they were really more of a budget locomotive for logging lines with tight corners and rough trackwork. They're still cool locomotives, though, just not powerhouses like the bigger Shay classes.

Nice engine and video, but I would recommend a drop of oil on each of the moving parts as part of the setup routine if you want it to last and keep running smoothly.

nice loco, nearly bought one myself years ago, burner could be turned down once steam is up , I believe there is a mod that can be done to quieten the burner. Lovely bit of kit sir. Many thanks for posting

This is very nice, but two friends and I built a class A shay in 15" gage, 5" scale for less money than this cost. 5" scale is about 45% of full size, pleanty big enough to ride upon.

A newer upgraded transmitter is now employed called a OMNI Tx-3. Very similar to the one in the Video. It costs £60 and £21 for the receiver. Available from peter Spoerer model Engineers. See contact details at end of video. Pete

How long does it take to warm up to operating temperature? How long will it run on a full water tank or fuel tank? Which one runs out first, gas or water supply?

Great video thank you very much. I never heard of accucraft till I stumbled upon one will looking up LGB's Your video has taught me more these trains then Accucraft's own website :P They should have you make a video for them lol. I have ridden a shay in person they are pretty wild. Thanks again I look foward to collecting accucraft in the future when I have a house with a proper yard.

Just to note, this is a Class-A shay. Unlike the bigger classes they weren't actually that powerful. The real benefits to Class-A shays were their low costs and ability to handle rough, poorly laid track.

shays don't have a 'gear box', just drive shafts and bevel gears. Climax's have a gear box.

im disappointed i live in an area littered with these Shay locomotives in the 2 truck and 3 truck configurations and there are more (no offence) brits buying model Shays then descendants of the people who built them and i live where not only where the Lima Locomotive Works are but where Neil Armstrong was born (people dont even have Saturn V rockets) i blame Facebook

Because we love 'em ! There is nothing like a Shay . Wales UK land of narrow guage .
