I've been using windows pc all my life and have been editing vids using the same platform since 2013.. finally on november 2023 i bought my first apple macbook pro 16inch with M2 Max chip (32gb ram, 1TB ssd).. its a completely different experience. absolutely great machine for video editing. love it. good thing i didnt wait for the M3 version. Thanks so much, edited for the first time with 4K footage on my 256G M1 & nearly had a stroke when I got the Memory Full pop up from just loading my clips into Final Cut Pro. I unloaded some apps & Forest-Gumped my way thru by attaching my 1 Terabyte external drive while editing & was able 2 finish my project. I also DJ with this same Mac & 256G just ain’t gonna cut it. Definitely upgrading to the M2 1 Terabyte MacBook Pro.

The question is: Does the MacBook really and insanely have less lag in daily usage and on the premiere timeline? Is it a really lag-free machine compared to the PC? Does Premiere perform better and experience less crashes on the mac?

Hey Matt. What about for DIT work? I have no intentions ever to use a MacBook for anything remotely related to editing or color grading. Just looking for specifically transferring data with the thunderbolt ports using the Codex Manager software for ARRIRAW HDE workflows.

Hey Matt, great video it's very helpful. I mostly edit documentaries, and deal with huge amounts of footage (currently working on a project of about 20TB). Because of the huge amount of footage, I'm using external drives (7200RPM). I'm wondering how much using these older drives limits performance and speed? Lately, I've had issues with the drives just chugging at times and getting very hot and everything slows down. Is this something a faster computer could help with, or is the speed of my edit being limited by drive speed and the amount of data? Working on a 2019 27" 3.6GHz Core iMac with 32GB RAM and Radeon Pro 580x 8GB graphics card.

I am also looking for a very fast thunderbolt external drive to edit 4k videos from without copying the footag to the macbook first. So I mean straight rom the drive. I saw this: Glyph Atom Pro 2TB NVMe SSD Thunderbolt 3. But I think you may know other options. OfCourse the drive I will not connect to the hub but straight to the macbook max m1.

Hey Matt, I picked up a new Macbook Pro M3 Max with 36gb of Memory - 1 Tb space .....but it wont open Premier Pro. It tells me "You can’t open the application “Adobe Premiere Pro 2024” because this application is not supported on this Mac". It's running on Sonoma maybe that's the issue? Any ideas? Have you actually tested m3 pro vs m2 max. Also i didn't see you recommend the m2 max mac studio if you thought you should get that over m3 max. Also it's more bang for your buck.

For non pro video editing (FCP, AE, Resolve, 360), I decided on MBP M2 Pro 14inch after watching your video. Problem is, the REFURBISHED M2 Pros cost MORE than new MBP M3 Pro with similar Ram and SSD!! So if they are the same price, would you still recommend M2 Pro for with the better memory bandwidth over M3 Pro with better battery and a little faster for single core processes?

I’m looking at a base 16” M1Pro for $1849 vs a base 14” M2 Pro or M3Pro both $1790 Which one do I pick!!

A misguided assumption being made by a lot of reviewers is that the Ecores and Pcores are the same chip to chip. M3 Ecores can actually be clocked to their max by the OS for higher priority threads that spill over the Pcores and are pretty much on par with an M1 performance core when they are ramped up. This allows the M3 family to scale all cores up and see gains over previous generations., seeing decent performance gains over both M1 and M2. As you stated , encoding/decoding supported codecs is a zero gain as that is all off loaded to the integrated media encoder. M2 family can certainly be found cheaper, and I agree will edit 4k footage with ease. Can't go wrong.

I found a NEW 16 inch M2 pro today for $1899! Pretty good, right? only 512 gb , but not too bad to be new and for the price.

Just ordered a macbookpro chip m3pro 14 inch , i could have saved a bit going for the m2pro, but again, i rather have it brand new since i plan to keep it several years, currently im typing on my fully functional, macbookpro 13 inch retina 2015! and still edit video nicely tho i have to restrain from 4k and longer and larger sessions, both foto and video, but hey, thats why i had to upgrade, other wise this is still a laptop to netflix and chill or document work easily

I bought the M3 Max 16. Went with the 128GB and 8TB. Wanted to be safe since I use this laptop for daily emails, KZfaq and some light porn on weekends. Didn’t want any lag or overheating issues. Hoping I can run Office Word soon with a laptop cooler. ❄️

Having just gone through this down-selection myself, I'm slightly torn on your conclusions, but it's all situationally dependent... I appreciate you making content like this for those who are searching because Apple certainly doesn't do a great job publishing specs. KZfaq is full of half-baked comparison videos with MacBooks with dissimilar configs, making it even more difficult to choose. A few thoughts below: 1. If you use the Adobe photo/video editing software suite, I believe a RAM upgrade is more beneficial than you suggest, especially since Apple uses spare SSD space for "swap" when it's overtasked. and you're sharing it with CPU and GPU. This further complicates things because the M2 Pro Chip in the 14-inch chassis doesn't allow for 32GB RAM so you have to get the M2 Max Chip. 2. I agree that if you get the M2 Pro Chip the 1 TB SSD has better performance, but for the M3 Pro Chip SSD size doesn't impact performance significantly (benchmarks prove this) Overall, at the time of writing this comment I don't know if I could honestly pick the "best one" because sales have things all mixed up and we've introduced refurbs. You are hitting a very hard topic. Mostly because every person’s needs are different. ( video only, photo only, and different mixes of those work loads). A couple things I disagree with you. I would upgrade to 16GB of Ram before upgrading the SSD to 512k. With the M2 air the increased speed of 512Gig SSD can make some difference in swap situations. But the best way to reduce swap slow down is more RAM to greatly reduce swap. I am looking at using ProRes video. The M2 chip supports it, M1 does not. This can be significant advantage with the iPhone pro supporting this. You also didn’t emphasize the M3, M3 pro and Max supporting Ray Tracing. This probably isn’t important for video editing, but is important for 3D rendering and for some future gaming. I suspect in a year or two, it will be many games. Oh, you didn’t mention that the M3 low SSD configs are faster than the M2. I don’t see as many good deals at the start of 2024 as we did around Christmas. I suspect we will see some of those good deals within a month or so. Have a good day!

The new Intel Meteor Lake processors with integrated ARC graphics are more than capable of editing 4K video and also have built in encoders. I have one , the MSI Prestige 16 and it’s great. For what it’s worth I also have the M1 MacBook Pro which has also been great. But there are competitors now in the Windows space.

I have bought a MBA M2 16GB with 256SSD. However, I went for an external 1TB SSD. I just could not justify the 512SSD for 230 bucks or so. 16GB should be standard anyway.

I hear lots of people saying you need 32/36GB of ram. Is 16GB enough for editing 4K 10-bit raw s log videos from Sony FX30 in Final Cut? Most videos will be like 5-10 mins but some may be longer, like 30 minutes.

I can confirm this lineup. REMINDER if you'll get MacBook Pro 14-inch M2 Pro. Just go with 1TB, I repeat 1TB SSD because the MacBook Pro 14-inch M1 Pro is faster than MacBook 14-inch M2 Pro (512GB). For MacBook Air 13-inch just go with 16GB RAM not the 8GB RAM. I already tried M1 MacBook Air 13-inch 8GB I kinda struggle a little bit for its speed.
