Last year I made a few videos about wanting to part with a significant part of my collection, and I got to selling things. Here's how that went, where I sold, what I sold and for how much. And what I still have left.

I have all my old systems and games from when I was kid in storage, but I've found that I get almost as much nostalgia from playing the old games through a solid emulation source, as having and playing the physical copies on original hardware.. Though I still haven't convinced myself to sell them!
@Johnny-P-Good
@Johnny-P-Good Ай бұрын
You seem to be a person that always look forward, craving new experiences through new games. And your channel seems to reflect that, becoming more about new games instead of the "retro" content, that gradually has disappeared from your channel. The type of person that seems to hold to collecting, is the nostalgic type; the one that's trying to "revisit" his childhood very often. In my particular case, I have to play in a CRT TV to truly revisit those memories. And I constantly rewatch older movies and music. So in that sense, I understand your detachment mindset of never looking back and not holding to things. And with emulation, you can always take a trip to your childhood from time to time.

I collect games as my only avenue of spending stupid funny money, I quit drinking 3 years ago and I dont want to think about the amount of money I was spending every month on alcohol for at home consumption and "going out." Which, realistically was to binge drink. So, the money I spent there goes towards videogames. I also have a 3 month old daughter now, and it will be a nice means to introduce her to videogames.. well, just as long as she doesn't touch any of it until she's old enough (kidding). She shares a name with your dog!

The Switch finally got out of my good graces, and I have a pretty sizeable collection that I will probably sell soon. Lots of Collector's Editions and other somewhat rare stuff that I cannot see myself playing anymore. As someone who relocates around the world at times, I am more and more keen on moving to digital collections, despite all their drawbacks. Not having to lug around a metric ton of games is now more important to me than ever. Thanks for the video.

I never really collected collected. I kind of tried to find the pieces that I remembered from being a kid, and most of it I just have in boxes that I move from house to house hahahaha. I stopped buying it when the pricing went through the roof. I like to own consoles and games, but found myself using emulation so that I don't wear out the hardware etc. I think if you have a few consoles boxed up with a few of your favourite games, and emulate the rest you will find peace and enjoyment etc. Also, I do mean go and buy the games that you're playing, don't rom rip etc. But once you're done sell it and use that like a voucher off your next purchase. It means you'll have to focus to finish a game, capture it with a video card if you're wanting to rewatch it later etc, and then move onto another game, and just spend smalls amounts often to keep it going.

Same with me, for the most part. Modern video game physical media look like complete throwaways anyways. Slathered in legal text agreement, boring stock CG art work, They're practically empty inside etc. The writing is on the wall, and I can't be bothered pre-ordering from companies like LimitedRunGames and having to wait several months to get my shiny plastic & Cardboard. As for retro gaming. Some things are just better left in the past, and instead to look back fondly on. There' s beauty in certain things being temporary. I mean, how long can some 40+ year old dude stand to look at his video game shrine of lets say 200+ NES games, Accessories(etc) that he's collected and owned for almost 2 decades? Most will get sick of that sh** and will want change! :P

That being said I think I've never felt the need to sell since I've been collecting for 20 years and never go out of my way to inflate my game count. I just buy games that I want to play and just never sell them so after 20 years it added up.

You could always just get a MiSTer, pair it with a good 27" Sony CRT and get a few different controllers and call it a day, and you'll have access to every single 8-16 bit title released, and with zero input lag, while saving a ton of money. That's what I'm doing. It isn't worth my money and time spending hundreds to thousands on old cartridges, old consoles, and old carts or discs just so i can fail at recapturing 'that' feeling or nostalgia, and besides it's impossible to recreate those awesome memories we all had way back when for numerous reasons. Switch, PS5 & XSX are the three players in town. Which is why I'd rather make new memories with both new and older retro games released on Switch that i haven't experienced before. Basically embracing what's in the now, like we all did back in the late 80's and 90s with the one or two current consoles we owned. we didn't own, or put the energy, time and money into several consoles with several different libraries.

I'd say posting on facebook marketplace or kijiji would be the way to go. It's not as much of a hassle as a live show. The only work is putting up the posting, and then meeting up with the buyer. No sitting and waiting at a booth all day and chatting with tire kickers.

Yeah, but 700 "is this still available?" messages, and lowballs.
@raevir

@@Cannotbetamed1 I notice a lot of people get annoyed at the "is this still available?" line. I just take it as a form of greeting at this point and autoreply 'yes it is' back. As for the lowballs, I shoot back my high ball counteroffer. I don't feel bad about it because that's the price I'd be willing to sell for, they can't get offended because it's slightly cheaper than my asking price. They can either go for it or move on, no stress either way.

360 will probably sell better now with the store closing and games like Tornado Outbreak going up. I am currently torn about selling a mass amount of my games. Good luck with future sales

zen intergalactic ninja 👌. i sold it a few weeks ago for 170 or something. i'm also on the edge of seeling allot of my collection. but don't when the tax department will annoy me. on marketplace we got the warning to not sell more then 30 artikels a year and not more then 2k a year. don't know the fine things about it. but if your thinning out your collection it's easely grows way above 2k a year. i do understand them, but allot of this stuff we already payed taxes for. i'm in the same headspace currently. got allot of stuff just sitting on the shelf.

Sold my nintendo “collection “ which was really just games i had as a kid. Was about 50 NES games, nothing very rare except a three screw commando and a “left Bros” mario 3. Also sold SNES which were mostly the FF and zelda games. Sold everyrhing on ebay for around $1200. Not bad considering everything was used but i think the peak time to sell was 5 or 10 years ago

Oh and I hope Lilly feels better! I had a dog that became arthritic when she got older and I learned to give her Adequan injections at home. (The vet taught me how to do it, I didn’t just decide to do it myself!) It completely changed her life, she was like a different dog! If you can learn to give the injections yourself, you can save a boatload of money in vet bills! Good luck!

I used Price Charting and took off about 20%. Lily has started getting Librela injections, which seems to be helping. Though I honestly threw a bunch of solutions in at once - Librela, join supplements, physical therapy. I'm not sure if it's one thing or the combination that's caused an improvement.

I appreciate videos like this. I'm tired of channels that gatekeep and make it seem like you can't be a fan if you don't own physical media. I always talk about how Chrono Trigger / Earthbound / FF6 are some of my best memories from 1995/1996, but selling my OG copies in 2003 when I was fresh out of college and unemployed doesn't change my memories or affect my love for revisiting these games digitally over the years. If I regret anything, it was how much I sold them for then and what I could have gotten for them since.
@Cannotbetamed1

I've gotten a lot of comments on this series of videos that are gatekeep-y like that. "Oh, well you must not really like gaming if you sell your games..." Collecting and enjoying playing games are completely different topics.

Pam whats your stance on selling old versions of rare games you bought a while back that are worth a lot nowadays, but then get rereleased on modern hardware for a nuch cheaper price? Would you keep your expensive copy or do you see it as a great way to make money? I love having rare titles but i really need thr money and its now readily available on other consoles id rather pay out big time

I remember trimming down my PS2 & 360 collections a few years ago, I had some reservations at first but no regrets in retrospect. If anything I've learned to be a bit more cautious on impulse buys just because something is a good deal. Anyway, are you Canadian? I had no idea. That's awesome.

Cool to see an update and that you had some success! I've been going full digital on games for a bit primarily for convenience and less clutter, definitely agree with that sentiment. I have some older stuff in the NES / SNES / GB age that had some sentimental value but I can't fathom keeping a physical collection of everything now, my Steam library would need its own house 😅

"I'm a big nerd and I have spreadsheets for everything" sounds like a threat from one of the parties in a financial liability hearing. The only gaming consoles I have hooked up to a display at this point are ones with HDMI or newer video outputs. I don't see myself buying adapters to hook older consoles up to newer TVs or buying new hardware that can play the cartridges from older systems on newer displyas. Things from older systems I have strong nostalgia for I will pick up on digital collections when they become available; but I'm not going out of my way to play those games on original hardware; because when I do, nostalgia usually quickly gives way to missing quantity of life features present on modern devices. Maybe I shouldn't be looking at things this bleakly at my age, but I'm starting to think about the amount of stuff I have in general; and how it will be someone's problem to deal with when I no longer walk this earth. Maybe it's not fair to them to encumber them with a bunch of things I wasn't using and didn't pay any particular amount of attention to is where I'm leaning on games I have on a shelf for display purposes only.

I think the rise of digital games has everything to do with businesses like pawn shops and independent game shops trying to scam sellers.

I think it's also got a lot to do about production costs and shelf stocking costs. Cartridges aren't cheap to produce, and nothing is that cheap to keep in stores. But yeah, killing the reselling market probably was tempting for console manufacturers too.

Problem with so many of my PS1 games is that they are roms on a flash drive installed in a Playstation Mini. Same with PC games, excepts it's gog not roms. Then there's how many repros I have for Saturn, Sega CD and 3DO. And SNES repros. You know, I really can't see a whole lot, except the consoles. I bought my tower of power for under a hundred dollars (that includes shipping) about twenty years ago, when people were just trying to get rid of old stuff.
