I really like the idea of dementia being portrayed as a virus causing glitches in a person's brain, because that's a good, easy-to-understand metaphor! It's also a really terrifying experience for most, and seems really surreal and confusing, so the game's really accurate in that way, and sad. Honestly, even if the CIA plot was real, I'm pretty sure she still was developing dementia, and that was being used by the people to their advantage, and the Glitch Witch wasn't real, but part of Gail's mind.

@@lunerlilly Probably meant real life as in it's an old urban legend with a lot of real speculation about it (definitely not the government mind control, but if the game actually existed or not), rather than a purely made up story posted for fun by some rando on the creepypasta wiki. @Dubbelthor

@@kacey6137 actually mind control is part of the urban legend. It was supposedly a game in arcades in like the 70s I think. And was supposed to give from long time exposure headaches, nausea, vomiting, hallucinations and other fun fun stuff due to it emitting weird wave patterns by sound and light to change your brain and mind. And was literally according to info about controlling individuals. Myth originates from the like mid 90s I think from a arcade forum. There is a video by Ahoy I wanna remember all about Polybius. This game is a beautiful and horrific way of showing a mental decline. Alzheimer's and Dementia are very similar to glitches in the brain, losing time and the plaque build-up in the brain causes parts of the mind to be blocked off and inaccessible kinda like holes or missing code. My great-grandma would personally forget the year, who I was, miss days miss paying bills and so much more while I did everything I could to help her. This is absolutely a metaphor or even more likely the mental decline from the first perspective put in an amazing visual way. One of the reasons the first ending is the best is the stress let off of Gail allowed her to prolong her mind for some time enjoying the days with her grand kids and her daughter but the more she stressed herself out and frustrated herself the more confused she became making the cycle worse and worse.

To me it was real, and the roots thing actually proves it - like, the Witch planted her roots in the protag's mind when she played the arcade the first time, and she "ate at her mind". And since the protag was already old and had some mind decline, then if the protag resists the witch at the end, and thus "removes the roots", it leaves an empty hole, as the Witch alluded to, and thus the protag is left REALLY diminished. So the only way for the protag to have a good ending is to decline the case at the beginning, since she doesn't get "implanted" with the Witch's roots then.
@wuffser
@wuffser 2 жыл бұрын
This game is truely evil. It used a character who's old enough to realistically suffer a mental disorder thematically similar to a glitch as a protag for this game. Now they have plausable deniability on this whole game. Is it real or not? Worst off she could be legit suffering and just happened to stumble across something crazy. The Polybus arcade theory being randomly included is even more cray. What a sinister set up for a non-existant sequel.

I think the story was about the arcade machine because when youre on that you can read "Polybius" as the title, the game that never existed. There were also back then theories that it was a secret CIA test to manipulate brains. So i think its based on that theory with the demetia maybe just thrown in there for people who dont know Polybius and make it more plausible that her mind is more easy affected by Polybius.

The fact that you could actually play this on a Gameboy is awesome to me. Helps that the art is still quite clear and impressive given their limitations. I always enjoy a good detective story, even if this one doesn't require much sleuthing. Both interpretations work well enough, but I feel, given the reoccurring theme of age, retirement, and missed opportunities of spending time with your loved ones, that the more depressing, realistic version of the events is more likely.

My grandmother suffered from dementia and it's one of the most horrible things to watch someone grow through. I honestly feel like the Glitch Witch is real, and because Gail has the beginnings of dementia, she's more vulnerable to the glitches, which is why the degredation is so unnaturally quick. Dementia at its worst will happen steadily over a period of months, a few days would require a specific illness and wouldnt be general mental degredation

SPOILERS FOR THE VIDEO So the police commissioner was in on it the whole time according to the last arcade game. Yet, why did he give us the option to turn the case down in the first place? If he really wanted to use "a senile old detective", why did he tell Gail to spend times with her grandkids? Perhaps it was his last act of mercy for Gail. Anyway, you'd think Fred would know to kill the teacher in a secluded location, him being CIA and all. I guess he panicked, or wanted to traumatize some kids. Too bad for him the kid in the front row was also under the control of the glitch witch. Or maybe the CIA used the kid to get rid of him? Hm.

I think the idea was that all the kids in the classroom were under control already so even if there were witnesses, none of them could tell the truth of the matter. CIA just used the one of the kids to tie up the loose end in case Fred had left behind any sort of evidence which it turns out he did.

It’s actually not unheard of or that rare for a child to be a murderer. Even as old as 12 or younger. Although a child ending up being the murderer is probably not gonna be the case most of the time, it definitely could be the case. One child shot at the school across her house because she hates Mondays she said. That case is pretty well known I would think but I don’t remember more details then that. But yeah another reason to be scared of children

You can see the name of the arcade game while playing. This game seems to be based on Polybius urban legend, which is about govn't mind-control program using said game.

Polybius (the name of the arcade machine) was a very popular creepypasta back when arcade machines reigned king when it comes to interactive media. Said to be a CIA experiment related to MK-ULTRA that can cause seizure and death to players, its goal is to find people with special talents. Highly suggest watching Ahoy's vid on the matter to learn more!

I see join vs fight against the glitch witch as someone giving into vs struggling with the delusions and confusions dementia can cause. You could give in and believe you're really back in the glory days of your youth, and as nonsensical everything is, you're as happy as you were back then, or even willing to keep doing your current work to, in the detective's case, solve what's going on from the inside. You could resist, deny there's something wrong, that nothing makes sense and so you get confused and frustrated, and try to push through until you can't remember how to perform basic tasks and are trapped in your own rotting mind.

I do not fear death. I am not religious, but it's simply a reasonable observation to think there has to be something after this, better or worse, and that it is likely an infinite recurrence. We came here from literally nowhere after all. What I do fear is losing my mental faculties. Even the most deranged schizophrenic is still "there," but when your brain starts physically dissolving in your skull, there will come a point when you are just completely unplugged from the matrix, meat without a "soul." You slowly lose grip of reality until all that's left is flickers of old synapses firing, but there isn't any coherence, and after that, until you aren't even aware of them. You are basically dead and you just keep moving.

Hi hiya Manly! Decl1ne is rather charming isn't it? Being a gameboy game and the main theme is about age and all. I'll try to explain a little bit from what I can figure out in this game's story. I've noticed the video game cabinet that the protagonist keeps getting her 'evidence' from is called 'POLYBIUS". POLYBIUS is a popular Creepypasta story for those who don't know, its about a rare one-of-a-kind arcade cabinet with the same name back in the 80's that was popular enough to be getting huge lineups, but it suddenly and swiftly disappears. Players would report to have strange symptoms such as hearing woman cry, seeing grotesque faces and scenery in their peripheral vision, getting headaches, blacking out, and developing *amnesia.* The owner of the arcade says that men in black came by occasionally to collect records. Really fun to see a game call back to POLYBIUS, the real killer was a conspiracy all along!!

Ahhhhh they went “Polybius” with this, I really liked that concept of a killer video game and it too according to myth was used by the CIA, (I say myth bc im not certain if it’s even true) and it also had a monster inside the game as well apparently, that’s really awesome! They made a movie for Polybius and I feel like this an epic nod to that never thought someone would make a game based off that concept tbh! (Sorry had to find this post bc I studied this story years ago and couldn’t remember until now, in the movie, they get pulled into the game and I believe the “glitch witch” is a nod to the legend of the demon that’s in that arcade, bc that’s what the movie was about was the CIA and the demon apart of the game itself.)

I think the whole glitch witch is real. They create some machine with mine controlling capabilities, affect the user based on their minds (which is how the detective can see the event). The government tries to hide their experiment after the teacher reports kidnappings, so they put an old detective on the job. The commissioner then tries to deter the old detective from the start. If she rejects, he then tries to gas light her into thinking she has dementia or crazy (what actually happens when 1 week time skip).

I like how this game can be deemed a metaphorical story about dementia, but that isn't what this is about. The arcade game you play is Polybius, this is a fan game about the mind-controlling, CIA-planted arcade game named Polybius.
