A high cost of living, heavy debt and a weak job market are all reasons why Canadians feel they have to live paycheque-to-paycheque.

It's not just that it is living in a city with so much nightlife and activity but being too tired to go enjoy it. It is the lack of nature yes I know there are parks but most are crowded the light pollution means you see no stars at night etc. I moved there from a small town and it was too crowded for me to live there. People in Toronto are thought of as not friendly but most are if you get to know them. I think people are less chatty etc. on the train because people crave personal space which they don't get as much of there. It is expensive to live there too and the homeless issue is like a grim reminder on every block how bad it can get.

Here's what would be helpful. Define what living paycheque to paycheque means first! Does that mean that they don't have any savings at all? Because that's what I'd take it to mean. If that is so, do the majority of Canadians have $0 usable savings? For example: That if they didn't get paid that week, that there's absolutely no way they can pay their rent this month. Because you could be putting 10-20% away in savings every month, and still be quote "living paycheque to paycheque", since each month, your chequing account funds are used for everything (expenses & savings). A more helpful question might be, are you able to save each month? Or what's your net Cash-flow each month?
@lifesymphony20244 жыл бұрын
Not only Canadians. At any part of the the world, most middle class and lower income group live on paycheques. Maybe, Canada provides better and more advanced infrastructures to their citizens in terms of condusive facilities in goverment schools, nurseries and colleges, goverment hospitals, public transportation, cleanliness, insurance policies, goverment aided old folk homes or nursing cares, retirement and pension benefits compared to developing countries. But, i am pretty sure the living cost must be high similar to Singapore and Japan. When a country has good infrastructures and policies, at least the burden of working class could be reduced.

OF COURSE We live pay cheque to cheque ! The fact is , we can borrow against our future when we get a car or home by taking out a loan. What most people do not understand, is the way money is created for their loans. The "money" is not in existence until the loan is created . The part none of us realized, was that the interest we must pay back along with the money borrowed into existence...does not exist ! How we find it is up to us ! It is like musical chairs...we join the loop of people looking for a chair to rest in , and there are 7 players and 6 chairs. Someone always looses and then , another chair is removed...and as far as saving money..in inflationary times like this..the value..purchasing power of our currency is being continually devalued. So leaving money in an account is counter productive ! You are wiser to buy gold or silver jewellery or coins as a store of value. Look at Venezuela, Argentina! Japan !

People who aren't high earners should try to relocate, even a significantly lower salary will go further 1-3 hrs outside of Toronto.
@user729743 жыл бұрын
@@AnnaLVajda Exactly. It's easier to be poor in Toronto than in other cities. Rent is a bit higher, but you're probably already used to living with a room mate anyways (because you're poor), so the difference in rent is halved. You have a fixed cost of about $140/mo for a transit pass instead of a car where sometimes it breaks down and sometimes it doesn't. It's easier to budget a flat $140/mo than the chaos of a car. If you lose your minimum wage job, there are tons of other minimum wage jobs in the city you can get instead. Not everywhere. I was in Augusta Georgia for 14 years and there is no high cost of living there. In fact central Georgia is one of the lowest costs of living in the US. Came back to Canada family issues and will most likely be moving back to Augusta. The price on everything here is way out of line. From a $8 drink a Starbucks to the insane crazy cost of real estate. I’m out!

I agree that with proper financial management you don’t have to live like this

In the US, people simply bought more house than they could afford. It's buyer's remorse when they realize life is unexpected and you can lose your job or get sick or have family that gets sick. Lots of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck too and it's usually about living beyond your means to show off for people who don't care about you.

Maybe so, but that's not a valid excuse for not saving or planning ahead.

Welcome to the Canadian Life. Perfect lesson to would be immigrants....come to Canada n become more n more poorer at the cost of enjoying health care, student loans and of course high school. Be ready for uneconomical accommodation, high taxes, higher tuition costs, freezing cold, low life jobs & a narcissistic attitude from stressed Canadians. I really want to advise the government....fix ur own show at home before recruiting more immigrants.

The problem is- unskilled, poor immigration. Over 80% of Asian students’ visas were rejected last to last year. They pay 4x more tuition fees and boost the economy with their skills. But surely the government is only interested in middle eastern immigration.

I see a lot of working poor in the GTA. I still see seniors who work at the check outs in grocery stores and single moms waiting on restaurant patrons etc. Not to mention starting families who are house poor because of the crazy mortgage payments on little war time bungalows in East York. I have known people with university degrees who still can't find work in their fields, so they end up working at McDonald' s. Pity.

Dominique Roydor the working class doesn’t owe the investor capitalist class their cheap labor. You want to bootlick the shoes of the wealthy? Then you will be on the losing side of the war once the working masses have been pushed to retaliate. The majority working class doesn’t need to recognize the absentee property rights of the capitalists, as more and more people realize this the capitalists will lose their power. Why should the majority allow the wealthy few to prevent them access to natural resources necessary for survival such as land and water rights? Look at how the investor speculation in the housing market has caused home values to skyrocket, they are no longer affordable to the working man. TL;DR: Stop being an indoctrinated bootlicker. We don’t owe the rich our labor, certainly not at the currently low costs.

People need to distinguish between needs and wants. You don’t need an iPhone, you can get a cheap samsung from 7/11 if you’re that broke. You don’t need an expensive Starbucks drink, you can make your own coffee or spend $2 at Tim hortons. Stop buying off white clothes when you can’t afford rent or car payments.

Canadians are basically “Land Locked” they have no choice but to stay in Canada. If they had more options like several other countries next door that offered a lower cost of living, they would have more options. The USA, with vastly different cost of living within a nation, may be an option, but it’s near impossible to move there unless you marry an American.

This comment section made me SAD.I'm living a normal life in Iran.I'm planning to apply for a university in Canada and work and live there by myself afterwards and I thought it will be much better than here and I can buy a good car and an apartment for myself and enjoy my life! But know my dreams are crushed.I didn't know even Canadians aren't happy of their lives.sorry for my English.I'm still learning..

@apprentice0nash4 жыл бұрын
While not ideal, the advice is reasonable. Pay off higher interest debt by borrowing against an asset at a lower interest rate. The problem is this is only an option for those that have a home with equity and even still it doesn’t address the root cause, which is insufficient income.
@shauncameron8390 Жыл бұрын
@@apprentice0nash Not really. It's poor management of finances. When you live beyond your means, no amount of money will ever be sufficient.
