A high cost of living, heavy debt and a weak job market are all reasons why Canadians feel they have to live paycheque-to-paycheque.

I live in Canada. When I am in Toronto I try to look at everyone's face on the subway, they all are very similar, stricken with stress and sadness. The lack of jobs, especially full time work is crazy.

K.E.V. Its z Toronto is a very isolated city, it is very hard to make friends and if ur Canadian born theirs a expectation to be perfect making lots of money. Trades people get sick of driving all around and want stability, office people want more money and change from daily routine. Grass is always greener on the other side.

It's not just that it is living in a city with so much nightlife and activity but being too tired to go enjoy it. It is the lack of nature yes I know there are parks but most are crowded the light pollution means you see no stars at night etc. I moved there from a small town and it was too crowded for me to live there. People in Toronto are thought of as not friendly but most are if you get to know them. I think people are less chatty etc. on the train because people crave personal space which they don't get as much of there. It is expensive to live there too and the homeless issue is like a grim reminder on every block how bad it can get.

Well here's an update, three years later: Canadians are still living pay-check to pay-check: rent & morgages keep going up, food prices will be up another 4% next year from this year (2019), as this week's reports suggest and wages are more or less stagnant.

Cars are much cheaper than in Malaysia. A car that you probably buy for 30k, we will have to spend about at rm130k excluding interest rates, petrol, car maintenance, toll charges. Could you imagine how much a person have to spend on just for his car monthly?? It will easily cost rm1k -rm2k. That's only 1 commitment.

@@AnnaLVajda First of all if you share rent with roommates you save a lot. If you live with your parents you save 100% of the rent, but you must be willing to give up your privacy and independence for it. You must be willing to take the shame and do the chores. You don't have what it takes to be successful. I know people who work 7 days a week, they work 3 jobs. One is in a warehouse, in the evening they work at a kitchen in a restaurant. On Saturday and Sunday they work at another restaurant. I know for a fact they are saving money. It's only a matter of time that they climb out of the struggle and reach success.

That's true and some people don't see that minimum wage doesn't mean the same as living wage. But sometimes, people have good jobs but expensive habits or needs which could be changed. Whether we like it or not, it is easier to change the situation of the second group by telling those people to budget.
@supercooled
@supercooled 4 жыл бұрын
@@bkit5 It's possible but people don't like hearing or reading about it because it disrupts their narrative. That 3 job worker is probably supporting a family or has grandiose plans to buy a house down the road. Who says you need to buy a house or even live in Toronto? That money earned scraping and saving could go into a mutal fund, investing for a comfortable retirement elsewhere but people want to enjoy life now and not wait so that's the price you pay but you don't get to complain about it; or you can but don't expect people to listen to it.

@@shinyam75 $100 invested every month from the moment you start to get into your career (say 25), until you retire at 65 would be worth about $630,000 assuming average returns. Simply saying no to a morning coffee would make you almost a millionaire over time. It's really not hard to comprehend but people just can't seem to understand financial planning. The average car payment ($512/month) would be worth about $3.2 million by retirement, again assuming average returns. What an expensive price to pay to show off to strangers...

Here's what would be helpful. Define what living paycheque to paycheque means first! Does that mean that they don't have any savings at all? Because that's what I'd take it to mean. If that is so, do the majority of Canadians have $0 usable savings? For example: That if they didn't get paid that week, that there's absolutely no way they can pay their rent this month. Because you could be putting 10-20% away in savings every month, and still be quote "living paycheque to paycheque", since each month, your chequing account funds are used for everything (expenses & savings). A more helpful question might be, are you able to save each month? Or what's your net Cash-flow each month?

Not only Canadians. At any part of the the world, most middle class and lower income group live on paycheques. Maybe, Canada provides better and more advanced infrastructures to their citizens in terms of condusive facilities in goverment schools, nurseries and colleges, goverment hospitals, public transportation, cleanliness, insurance policies, goverment aided old folk homes or nursing cares, retirement and pension benefits compared to developing countries. But, i am pretty sure the living cost must be high similar to Singapore and Japan. When a country has good infrastructures and policies, at least the burden of working class could be reduced.

By sharing the cost of rent, groceries and bills, my roommate and I somehow manage to get by month to month. There is nothing left over. The reason why lots of North Americans are poor is because the system allows us to borrow money that we most likely can’t pay back. We live in a “ I’ll pay it later “ system and this entraps most of us. Focus on paying off debt, stay away from credit cards. If you can’t afford it then you can’t afford it.

True, but just because you can doesn't mean you should. Part of being an adult is developing responsibility, and signing your future income away because of a past purchase is dumb. You can't blame the system, because at the end of the day it is you who made the decision. That would be akin to your friends telling you to jump off a bridge, and you getting angry at them once you get hurt. If they didn't not push you, or force you into the situation then they cannot be blamed.

OF COURSE We live pay cheque to cheque ! The fact is , we can borrow against our future when we get a car or home by taking out a loan. What most people do not understand, is the way money is created for their loans. The "money" is not in existence until the loan is created . The part none of us realized, was that the interest we must pay back along with the money borrowed into existence...does not exist ! How we find it is up to us ! It is like musical chairs...we join the loop of people looking for a chair to rest in , and there are 7 players and 6 chairs. Someone always looses and then , another chair is removed...and as far as saving money..in inflationary times like this..the value..purchasing power of our currency is being continually devalued. So leaving money in an account is counter productive ! You are wiser to buy gold or silver jewellery or coins as a store of value. Look at Venezuela, Argentina! Japan !

@mgoi2254
@mgoi2254 4 жыл бұрын
@@AnnaLVajda You can make a good living anywhere in this country if you're determined. Toronto is just a difficult place to get started because the cost of living is smothering and people can't save enough money for their future. Its a city for the wealthy as suggested by the price of real estate. People who aren't high earners should try to relocate, even a significantly lower salary will go further 1-3 hrs outside of Toronto.
@user72974
@user72974 3 жыл бұрын
@@AnnaLVajda Exactly. It's easier to be poor in Toronto than in other cities. Rent is a bit higher, but you're probably already used to living with a room mate anyways (because you're poor), so the difference in rent is halved. You have a fixed cost of about $140/mo for a transit pass instead of a car where sometimes it breaks down and sometimes it doesn't. It's easier to budget a flat $140/mo than the chaos of a car. If you lose your minimum wage job, there are tons of other minimum wage jobs in the city you can get instead. I moved from a small city to Toronto when I was poor and I found it less stressful overall. Different types of stress, like the crowdedness and noise, but overall I felt like I was more in control of my life.

Dominique Roydor the working class doesn’t owe the investor capitalist class their cheap labor. You want to bootlick the shoes of the wealthy? Then you will be on the losing side of the war once the working masses have been pushed to retaliate. The majority working class doesn’t need to recognize the absentee property rights of the capitalists, as more and more people realize this the capitalists will lose their power. Why should the majority allow the wealthy few to prevent them access to natural resources necessary for survival such as land and water rights? Look at how the investor speculation in the housing market has caused home values to skyrocket, they are no longer affordable to the working man. TL;DR: Stop being an indoctrinated bootlicker. We don’t owe the rich our labor, certainly not at the currently low costs.

Canadians are basically “Land Locked” they have no choice but to stay in Canada. If they had more options like several other countries next door that offered a lower cost of living, they would have more options.
