I know it's just stuff, but it still takes a huge emotional toll to see the life you've built and the things you've worked hard for to be torn apart in seconds. Here's to hoping they have good insurance and can rebuild as smoothly as possible.

It should be a building code mandatory for tornado alley paths anywhere a tornado can happen housing should always include a shelter to be tornado proof even for apt buildings a shelter should be provided on grounds nearby ....that is insane to me..,human lives are not disposable and should never be so irrelevant that providing safety is optional...there should be a state funding to ensure all dwellings include a tornado shelter adequate for number of residents no matter what!!!!! How horrific ....the building contractors don't feel a thing they take the money and run but where is the state on this crap they have one you better know they surely have a tornado shelter and on the citizens dimes taxpayers keep the lawmakers safe what a disconnect and betrayal of the citizens who put food in their mouths not to mention all the luxurious living the governor congressmen and senators live representatives too mayors and chiefs..chambers of commerce those members make bank lawmakers and dept of housing get your spit together.

it's so odd that a roof can literally lift off, while objects inside the house remain there.
@star-army24 күн бұрын
When the air gets forced under it, its shape catches the air like a sail. It's got a big flat surface area for the wind to push on. The tornado probably pushed a huge amount of air into the main level while also shoving the roof sideways. The shearing load was too much and the whole thing just tore off. Scary as heck, glad they were safe in the basement.
@hebneh24 күн бұрын
@@star-army You can see roofs literally lifting off into the air - and then disintegrating - in more than one tornado video. It's really remarkable.

Hopefully new construction will use hurricane ties and have a continuous uplift load path to the foundation. Biggest thing is preventing the roof from lifting off like a wing.

Where are they gonna live now? Since a lot of the homes around them are ruined. The architectures should build tornado alley homes to not be so destructible rebuilding process. A home is phenomenal constantly rebuilding
@OnWisconsin3324 күн бұрын
Judging by the depth of the home, it's not a house. It's a DOUBLE-WIDE placed over a basement foundation instead of on a slab. EDIT: before the nasty replies come in...okay...it's a MANUFACTURED HOME that was either fully built in a factory and then trailered to the site OR it was modular and the factory-built modules were assembled and set on the beams over the basement. Obviously, the stairs are either an available option or a special modification and, either way, it saved their lives.

We need to use more concrete in USA construction. This cardboard just doesn't hold up.
@dumbfox103624 күн бұрын
The hospital in Joplin, Missouri was a midrise of reinforced concrete. The tornado in 2011 picked it up and shifted it about 4" off of the foundation and killed several people inside. Building "tornado-proof" is a fool's errand. Better to just have a basement if something happens and to rebuild after.

Tornadoes will destroy a brick building more easily than a wooden one. The walls on this one actually held up pretty well too. Hurricane ties, which are becoming popular in Tornado Alley, might have even prevented the roof from being torn off.

Clearly the walls held up though when the roof was torn off. Brick is actually more likely to collapse in a tornado than wood framing anyways. If this was a solid brick house, then there'd be nothing but a pile of rubble.
