Today we talk about the construction of the ferries PRIDE OF DOVER and PRIDE OF CALAIS for Townsend Thoresen.
In a previous podcast, we talked about the Spirit class - three Townsend Thoresen ferries built at the Schichau Unterweser shipyard (SUAG) in Bremerhaven, Germany in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Just five years later, the European Ferries Group, which marketed its services under the Townsend Thoresen name, commissioned a new set of ferries. These new ships were to be twice the size of the Spirit class and were nicknamed "Chunnel Beaters". This term referred to the new idea that emerged in 1984 to connect Great Britain and France with a fixed connection. A total of five plans were presented, each with different combinations of tunnels, dams, and suspension bridges - including the EuroRoute. However, the British and French governments ultimately opted for the privately financed construction and maintenance of the Eurotunnel.

After how they treated their crew, I would never sail P&O again. A shame because as you say, during the 90s they were the best ferry company not only on the Dover route, but once they got the new Olau twins, the best on the Western Channel route to France.

It was a shame they couldn't find employment elsewhere, but I guess they were so taylor made they wouldn't have been able to work other routes. Great work as usual Carsten! 😊

Hi Mitchell, Thank you for your comment! It's true that these vessels were specifically designed for their intended area, which may have limited their adaptability for other services. It's always a challenge to balance the unique requirements of a specific route with the potential for future versatility. Nonetheless, these ferries served their purpose well and left a lasting legacy in the maritime industry. From a sustainability standpoint, their early scrapping was a great shame. I appreciate your kind words and support. I'm glad you enjoyed the video podcast, and I hope to continue providing you with interesting and informative content in the future. Best regards, Carsten

also they were worn out thirty years of shuttling back and forth on high intensity runs isn't great for the structure nor the engines.

Hi Al, thanks for your feedback! Yes, you´re right. Those times in the English Channel were certainly tough, but they were not 30 years. PoD, for example, from 1987 to 2010, that's only 23 years. It is worth noting that other ships with similar characteristics have achieved an operating time of over 40 years. While it is true that such intensive use takes a toll on a vessel's structure and engines, proper maintenance and timely retrofitting can significantly extend her life. I think it is a great shame when companies constantly talk about sustainability and "green" (because these days these are great, modern, and daily issues that we are all supposed to walk in step with) but then scrap ferries/ passenger vessels that are significantly under 40 years old (which fortunately does not happen that often).

@@alstorer After the Stena Line buyout by P&O to end the P&O Stena Line partnership they were run into the ground. Before that they were meticulously maintained. Had they continued to be looked after properly they had another 20 years in them easily. Pride of Kent (ex Spirit of Free Enterprise) was in better condition after her stint on the channel and went on until 2009 in service in Greece. She was 39 years old when withdrawn and was withdrawn not because she was knackered, but because her new owners were in financial trouble.

Both Ferry has unusual design & unusual beauty, but my favorites HURTlGRUTEN's and SlLJA LlNE's "Cruise Ferries" besides SNCM's several cruise ferries: ms Napoleon Bonaparte, ms Daniel Casanova
