Maybe 400? For the absolute best hand Compare that to hitting huge on slots, table games, etc., where you're talking about 10s and even hundreds of thousands of dollars

Hi Dan. This is a common question I get. The expected payoff for holding the low pair more than makes up for their slight infrequency in improvement. You can improve to 2 pair, 3 of a kind, full house, and 4 of a kind more easily holding a low pair. While it is easier to make a pair of jacks or better holding the high cards, most of the time you will win back your 5 credit bet, not to mention it will be harder to make 2 pair or higher than it would when you start with a pair. He actually played it right. You hold A, K, Q, J because you have more outs to make a paying hand. 10, J, Q, K or A will all give you a paying hand. This is strictly by odds.

The reason you dont hold the Ace is you pigeon hole yourself into an inside straight by keeping the J, K, A. Only a Q and 10 can make you the straight for a payout. You have more "Outs" (cards that will make you a paying hand) by holding just the J,K. There is statistical math behind this strategy. Which is why a 3 card straight flush with an A (A, 2, 3 suited) is worth less than 3 consecutive suited cards (3, 4, 5, suited)

No mistake was made. If there was, the traffic light in the lower right corner of the screen would light up yellow or red. Regardless, I looked up the expected value for your suggestion. Holding the A4 of diamonds has an EV of 0.39 coins per 1-coin bet. Holding the KJ as shown in the video has an EV of 0.48 coins and is therefore the best play.

That’s not a gutshot. That’s an open-ended straight draw (5-6-7-8).

9/6 describes the payoff for a full house and a flush - 9x your bet on a full house, 6X your bet on a flush. The casino sets the pay table for that game. Pay tables can differ between casinos, between machines in the same casino, or even between different denominations on the same machine.

I think because you have only 2 cards for the open ended straight. While you have more cards to make a 2 pair, or better.

A. You'd play them exactly the same. An outside draw is obviously better (you have two chances to hit the big money), but even if you miss the straight flush, there are still plenty of cards that give you a solid consolation prize (i.e., a straight or a flush). This happens about 1/4 of the time, but you're dealing with at least a 4x payout here. B. Go for the straight flush.

You should always toss the face cards and keep the low pair, regardless of the results of the draw. When holding the pair, you’re not just hoping for a second pair, but also 3 of a kind, full house, or 4 of a kind.

Two cards to a royal flush - a common occurrence. Strategy is to hold 2 to a royal in most VP games assuming that there is no better option. Notable exception is Ace-Ten suited.

In Jacks or Better, If you have 3 unsuited high cards, one of which is an ace, the best play is to hold the other 2 high cards. When holding all 3, the best hand you can get after the draw is a straight, with 3 of a kind and two pair also possible. Holding just the KQ allows for other hands to potentially come on the draw - including 2 ways to make a straight (AKQJT, KQJT9), a full house, and 4 of a kind - as unlikely as it may seem. I'm not sure what you mean by payouts being a little off. Shown is a 9/6 pay table (also known as "full pay") and offers a payback percentage of 99.54% and is the most generous payback one can find anywhere when playing Jacks or Better. One cannot find a Jacks or Better game on any video poker machine anywhere in New York State with such a generous pay table. Also, "full pay" Jacks or Better, if played properly, has one of the lowest house advantages and unlike slot machines, is skills-based. On a related note, drawing that royal flush in the demonstration was amazing. Kudos!

Wow. Did you even notice the traffic light at the bottom right corner of the screen? It shows the best strategy and you will notice that it always tells me that I’m correct to hold the low pair over the face cards. If you did some proper research, you will see that every strategy guide will tell you to hold the low pair. The basic strategy with video poker is to hold the cards that give you the highest expected value (EV). When holding the pair, you don’t have just “2 targets” as you suggest. Besides 3 and 4 of a kind, you can also get 2 pair or a full house. The odds are not as bad as you make it seem either. You need to take into account every possible combo of cards that can come on the draw. Not to mention, holding a single high card will most of the time win you just your 5 credits back, assuming you do win. You do not get enough straights or flushes to justify discarding the low pair in favor of 1 or 2 high cards. Overall, even though the probability of winning anything might be better when holding the high cards, the payoff for 2 pair, 3 of a kind, full house, and 4 of a kind more than make up for it, resulting a higher EV for the low pair compared to 1 or 2 high cards.

@@ClubMikeV You're still wrong in simple arithmetic. Lets say you get the more likely face card win because of the 3 targets with 4 shots. Now you're in the exact same position as you are with the low pair. You still have 2 targets, and 3 shots to get the 3 of a kind, and the 2 pair, the full house, and the 4 of a kind same as you would with the low pair. If you don't get the 3 of a kind or anything else you still have a wining hand. Also if you don't get the face pair you have the chance to get the straights, and flushes which you absolutely don't have keeping the low pair Even if you have no face card you still discard the low pair because keeping it costs you 2 shots at getting a winning pair the easiest win to get. Worse by throwing away the better chance of a jacks or better you have in fact rdoubled your original bet but only get the reduced number of 3 shots at winning a reduced number of wins. it's so simple I'd have to cut a hole in your head, and pour it in with a tea pot to make it simpler.
