I know exactly what you're referring to. Blockbuster video in particular had a pleasant, almost calming smell. I don't know if it was the candy and popcorn along with all the plastic or what, or if they pumped some special odor into the store but virtually all of them had that familiar friendly comforting smell. I indeed miss that and am sad my sons won't experience it for themselves because our local Family Video does not have that smell...

OMG I remember the decision paralysis while in a Blockbuster, when they would have like an entire wall set up for the hot new release and none were in stock, then you didn't know what you wanted. Also I remember as a young teen, checking out Lifeforce, the clerk said "you know this isn't about the NES game", i replied "Yeah but it's got a naked chick" He gave me an affirmative nod and checked it out to me

Ultra CNC . It kind of depends on what you think the purpose of a library is. If you think it's just a place to hold books of knowledge, then yes you are mostly correct. Though Libraries have been traditionally more than just sources of non-fiction literature. However if you think the purpose is to collect, preserve and share with the community it serves; the knowledge, information and artistic tales of society and civilization than your view is a bit narrow. The technologies and mediums of society have changed quite a bit in the last 100 years.

My mother actually worked as the manager of a local video store back when I was a child. Sometimes she would take me to work and I can remember playing in the store. Other days she would setup a game console (because they rented those out too) for me and I’d sit and play games while she worked. I was quite young so I don’t have the same types of memories as these guys did. But I can still say I have fond childhood memories of my local video store. :)

I worked in the video store rental business for nearly a decade from 1990-2000. GREAT times! We used to have guys come in on Wednesdays to rent "adult films" & for some reason that day was the day those movies made the most money. We used to joke about it being "hump day". Many guys would come in wearing baseball caps & sunglasses & go to the new releases section them when no one was looking they'd go into the adult room. We were advised to play trailers, but my friends & I would play films like "Monty Python & The Holy Grail", "Airplane! ", "The Naked Gun", "Star Wars" & "Ferris Bueller's Day Off". We could not play R-rated movies, but pushed the envelope on a lot of the PG-13 films.

I had a little video store across the street from me growing up. It was pretty cool because aside from the typical mainstream Hollywood movies, they also had these really bizarre sub genres of horror films like _'Andy Warhol's Frankenstein'_ or the _'Nazisploitation'_ variety like _'Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS'_ and _'Gestapo's Last Orgy'._ They usually had the *red sticker* on them indicating an NC-17 or X rating, but that didn't matter. The store clerks didn't care how old you were. They'd rent me practically anything. The video store years was a really cool time to be a kid.

Nostalgia Critic is a character, same as how it's James in the video and not The Nerd. The title most likely has Nostalgia Critic (and Cinema Snob) because it's a more recognizable name and would get more clicks, despite it not actually being the character in the video.

I grew up in a very rural area in the late 80s and 90s so we never had a Blockbuster (which might have been for the best as they edited their movies) but we had a bunch of small chains and mom & pop video stores. Those stores had tons of horror, cult and even adult videos. That’s where I really cut my teeth being a genre film fan at a young age.

there wasnt much finer of an experience in the 90s than going to blockbuster and seeing all of the snes games lined up on the shelves to rent, and seeing the cartridge behind the games box as there are still copies not all rented out. going to the register and picking out your favorite candy and soda meant it was going to be an amazing weekend. sometimes i walk into a store and it has that distinct smell like blockbuster used to, and it really sends me back.

What I remember most about going to our local rental store, is when I rented the movie Faces of Death. I was about, I think 13 years old. When I took the rental tag to the worker he said “You might not like this video.” I replied, “Naaaaa, I will be ok.” About an hour or two later I want back to the store, with a shocked and scared look on my face. I gave the movie back to the worker and said “please take this back” :P
