Thank you Steve. From ‘Marvel Team Up’ to Adorno - this is why I keep watching.

This video is the Citizen Kane of booktube videos. This video is The Magic Mountain of booktube videos. This video is The Wasteland of booktube videos. Future generations of vlog-content creators will study this video in awed and silent wonder. They will turn to each other and cry like frightened children and they will throw away their i-phones and camera equipment and algorithmically-obsessed ambitions and they will bow down before it like worthless, supplicatory, humble peasants as if before a god. Then they will retreat to their napping couches and bean beds and spend the rest of their lives eating biscuits and watching pornography.

Yes, Steve so far offered up about half his proposed reading list of substantive philosophical writings for a 2024 programmatic delight…

This is one of my favorite videos of yours in a while. You're showing a deep respect and care for Grix in the sharpness of your criticism, as if you see his potential beyond the circular mental confine he's found himself in. I hope he sees it that way, too. Just a wonderful video, truly.

No confinements here! Just an omnivorously curious exploration of philosophical arguments :)

@@materiagrix Yes, that's unfair of me. You're being open to critical and provocative works. In getting my English degree, I had to read a lot of writers like Adorno, Derrida, Foucault, etc. That time was wonderful for me, for plenty of reasons, and those works felt like a genuine upending of so much I took for granted. My impulse to now characterize them as circular and confining stems from how unfairly those writers treated the ideas they criticized, which I did not learn for myself until years later, and how much that style of writing obfuscated important issues through abstraction and a kind of skeptical drama. I ended up building bad habits: I communicated complexity without clarity. Worst of all, I felt superior in playing with unclear thinking and language. But it really is unfair to project my experiences onto you. We can read all sorts of things without swallowing them whole. And it certainly wouldn't feel right to take strangers at their word and to self-censor what you read. I'm glad you're curious and hope that curiosity persists.

Steve, this video would have been better with jazz playing in the background. :) Apart from that, I’d say you gave Adorno absolutely all the respect he deserves.

@@davidnovakreadspoetry The Frankfurt School were left-wingers in the Weimar Republic whose general view was that culture peaked exactly when everything they liked was at its height and then it’s been downhill ever since. Everything they disliked, like jazz and arts past the early 20th century avant garde, tied together with capitalism in a general system of decline. There’s this humorless obliviousness to themselves as persons occupying and shaped by a historical, cultural moment as opposed to boldly advancing toward ALL TRVTH. I’m about as much a fan of them as Our Gracious Host is.
