I have been using the Really Right Stuff BH-55 Ball Head for a few days now and are more then impressed!
OK its expensive and I was very reluctant to spend $455 (not including camera plate). I love the very smooth action it has as the tension knob works well, with its numbered positions so you can return to different set-ups easy. The ball head comes with a carry case and instruction manual.
The one here is the leaver release version which is there most popular and is very easy to use especially for the way I use it as I'm often moving from vertical to horizontal.
A few things to note are...
You can only buy this from www.reallyrightstuff.com and the ball head does not come with a plate. You need to buy the plate that matches your camera.

NOW you tell me.... I had to go back to the shop the next day and get the plate! For my D850. So far I love this unit.

I love my really right stuff BH55 ball head. There is no one in the industry that maintain such a high level of quality. Order some RRS gear and you will find yourself just admiring the machining. (Especially if you are familiar with machining processes). It can handle any weight I can throw at it. My 11 pound EF 400mm f/2.8 is II locks off nicely and will not slip. Even with the tripod and kit on my shoulder on a hike. (Albeit a short one with the weight). That being said, never try the RRS fluid heads! I have the FH-350 for the smaller prime sans the FG-02 for the big lenses. If you have the camera locked off taking series of pictures in one position that is fine but the RRS fluid heads are the bomb. However they are not small and light if that is what you are looking for. Light tripods are always a disappointment when they come off your should though. You’ll be happy with your BH-55. You will pass it down to your grandson.

hi mr.MJ, this is a good review and as i to own the BH-55 plus alot of there other items from RRS,no there not cheap but most of gear they make will last a lifetime!unlike other brands out there with lesser quality!that why i ended up getting this ball head-it always works-USA.

I have the BH 55 but frankly I'm not that crazy about it. As beautifully crafted as it is, it still flops around like every other ball head. I'm more interested now in having the Arca-Swiss C1 albeit the higher cost.

NIce review, sir, but I always prefer seeing ball head reviews with the head actually mounted on a tripod...it seems to faciliate moving each knob/control/lever better than hand-holding it. Also, have you ever tried the Leofoto brand? They make a similar unit for a bit less money...just not sure how their quality compares to RRS.

This ball head is a bit heavy at 2 lbs. I got a Markins m20 instead which is 1.25 lbs, seems almost as good in a lighter package.

***** at that price range, they probably assume that you already have a plate for your camera.

GuGu E. Michaels any Acra Swiss style plate works perfectly. I use a really right stuff L plate. But you can get some Sun plates from Amazon at a lot better price. If you get stuck drop me another message and I'll find you a link but let me know for what camera. Mike

Thank you very much for responding so fast. I shoot with the Blackmagic Ursa Mini 4.6K camera. And my car mouth can handle up to 50 pounds so that's why I bought this. But none of my plates fit.

The best thing for you to do given the fact that I'm not familiar with the black magic mounts would be to give B and H photo a call or contact them on there web page. They are super helpful and will give you exact.

so u spend 400$ for a ballhead and still need to buy a separate release plate ($100) ? i mean: at price of this range u would expect to have one included? -.-

Part of it is the L-brackets are specific to camera model. So there would have to be a variety of package prices I suppose, depending on the size of the camera and associated bracket. But yeah, really nice stuff, but pretty spendy.
