There are only two other nations, Lindblum and Alexandria, all on a single continent, the rest of the world is barren and only has small communities like Conde Petie and Esto Gaza that aren't even known by the isolated Mist Continent (Until they suddenly are. But we'll be getting to that bit of lousy world building later) and Lindblum isn't even hostile with Burmecia. Also, wasn't Lindblum already pretty advanced? Unless Fratley is a shut in who has lived in a bubble. Sir Fratley "I don't know if my spear alone is enough to protect Burmecia..." "...which is precisely why I must go out into the world." Freya "Sir Fratley...I don't think I can live on my own - not without you." Sir Fratley "Freya, you're going to be fine." "Trust your strength... and have faith in your destiny." "Once I complete my journey around the world, I will return to Burmecia." Why can't Freya and Fratley just go together? What is preventing them from doing this? What is with this game and lovers just arbitrarily leaving each other for dumb reasons? 2:37 Fratley "Freya, you say?" "I believe this is the first time we have met..." Freya "What...did you just say?" Fratley "I'm sorry, but I cannot remember you for the life of me..." Freya "Y-You jest!" "You cannot have forgotten me!" "It's me, Freya! Freya of Burmecia!" Fratley "I am sorry..." Freya "No..." Fratley has amnesia, but you want to know what the real problem is? It is never revealed what caused his amnesia. That's right, this whole thing is never even properly explained.

I'm going to admit something personal here. Back when I first played IX and the frustrated memories that I had afterwards (Especially during these particular segments of the game), I felt that Freya was hijacking the romance focus from Zidane and Garnet. Though looking at it now, I think that I was just frustrated because we are seeing a better love story (except for this bit where Fratley just leaves and Freya doesn't go along for no real reason) than the main one with Zidane and Garnet that is supposed to be a major focus. The fact that this is also happening during the point where Garnet has abandoned Zidane doesn't help matters. This isn't really Freya's fault though, she isn't the one who made Garnet act like an idiot and made Zidane act inconsistently, or any of the forced drama surrounding that scene in Lindblum. And again, Freya and Garnet should have been properly introduced to each other and had actual character interaction, with Freya teasing her about love, especially regarding Zidane. Giving them more personality. 1:57 Freya "Sir Fratley, I..." "I have missed you so much..." "I began my search for you immediately after you left Burmecia." "Where have you been all these years...?" "To what corners of the world have you travelled?" "My dear Fratley..." "I climbed the highest mountains only to hear rumors of your victories..." Freya is showing more devotion to her significant other, Fratley, in just these few lines, than Garnet does for Zidane throughout the entire game, just laying that out here. Freya "I searched the deepest valleys only to find your footsteps." "But I never found you." "And in the end, I heard something..." "Something unbearable!" …And? What was it? Yeah, Freya never really reveals what she heard that was "unbearable".
