@@Patriot677to me it is an earthquake!! Recently in Morocco they had a 7.0 earthquake and several people died, because their structures are very, very old. Entire villages were flattened. Japan has been preparing well for earthquakes. I experienced a 4.7 tremor once, as a teen, and it was one of the most horrific moments of my life. There was no destruction but you feel totally helpless and even though it is only for a couple of minutes, those minutes feel like an eternity! I remember being shaken for weeks. Which was one of the reasons I didn't move to California.

Admirable aspects of Japan: 1) The best earthquake and tsunami warning systems in the world, 2) Strict engineering and building codes that keep modern structures safe and standing, 3) A population that remains calm and mostly unpanicked during disasters, and 4) A total lack of looting after a disaster. I don’t think anyplace in the world comes up to their standards.

I’m in Tokyo, and felt it. My family and I had just returned from a bike ride around the park and were just settling down to eat when our building started swaying. We live in a tall high rise, and it felt like being on ship in a rough sea, the doors were swinging open and shut, and I could see the building next to ours swaying was well. But the New Year’s earthquake was a drop in the bucket compared to the 2011 quake, which I also remember quite clearly. I was in LA for the ‘92 and ‘94 quakes, and in Oakland in ‘89. I’m pretty immune to being surprised by earthquakes by now.

I'm seriously crying at this very moment by stopping at the 0:51 mark to type while muting The Simpsons in the background as I'm viewing all the way here in Phoenix, AZ and my 29 years of breathing on this earth, I couldn't even fantasize in my autisitc brain how it feels to be in a natural disaster like this alongside engulfed by a tsunami! Seeing the 2nd. video of the parents trying to stay in place with their baby as I can hear him/her in the background struck my bony heart knowing how deadly earthquakes can be since my state doesn't go through any type of natural disasters since we're far inland and was worried that 2024 will end up being a horrific start! It's awful enough to witness earthquakes from Eastern Turkey last February that many people's lives were lost to outside of Rabat in Morocco for example a couple months later if I recall and now this?! The earth is just trembling apart and can barely hold herself together which worries me a ton on how unbalance nature can be and how us human beings that don't have to live through these conditions take our planet for granted! *PLEASE HANG IN THERE JAPAN!* I'm so darn upset to see how your new year has to be in trembles which makes me more blissful beside my lack of mental health to not live in these daunting conditions across the Pacific! Mon. Jan. 1st. 2024 @ 10:00am.

Fun fact: earthquakes on the moon can last an hour because there are no large bodies of water to help absorb the tremors. I hope nobody was injured. The japanese are brilliant and have designed buildings to handle quakes like these.

I was in Japan for a military exercise in the early 2000s. We experienced around an 8.0 I believe. It was extremely shocking. It felt like you moved across the room every couple of seconds. Complete powerlessness. Also experienced some mild California earthquakes. Yet nothing compared to the typhoon/volcano eruption simultaneously in the Philippines in the 1990s. The cataclysmic event lasted a few days. It looked like midnight outside and the winds were howling and the ground shook for days. Afterwards the ash was stacked around 6 feet high all around us, and the military had evacuated us a few islands away already. We were stationed at Clark Air Force base, which was devastated and forced to close. Evacuating on so many Navy ships and helicopters was cool for a kid, but the sense of awe and terror during the main eruptions has never left me. Nature is metal.

Um. What's Japan supposed to do? Pack up the whole country and move to a mysterious nondisclosed, non discovered unoccupied land big enough for the population? We see how well that's working for Israel right?
