Is Vietnam East or Southeast Asian?.. A controversial topic, but here is my take.
My first video using Premiere Pro. It took me a while to get the hang of it, so it's been a while since I uploaded a video. Personally I think the quality can be better. Hopefully my videos using this program will be better in the future :)

0:52 Geographic East & Southeast Asia
2:25 Cultural East Asia
4:45 Cultural Southeast Asia
8:16 Vietnam... East or Southeast?
11:47 Modern Day
13:10 Conclusion
Thank you to Prod. Riddiman for the music.

The reasons why Vietnam belongs to Southeast Asia: geographical location, climate, economic region. Reasons why Vietnam belongs to East Asia: culture, traditional costumes, people, society, politics, most of their history, writing (kanji, chu nom, romaji-latin are three types) script in Vietnam), although tomaji is used, it does not mean that romaji is considered unique, it is only used a lot and is common, so don't misunderstand, a lot of Vietnamese people pay attention to kanji and nom... Vietnam is special, this country is very impressive.

Thank you for making this and speaking so clearly and thoughtfully. This in particular has made me fall in love again with Vietnam. I was enamored for some time and then became somewhat disconnected and confused about what frustration I felt living there for some time. I think in truth it was extremely difficult to sometimes relate too because of just how middle country it is in the perspective you so nicely broke down here. Being American but having lived in Japan and in Kuwait around Muslim countries. Vietnam was truly interesting and very difficult to rapidly adapt to or classify so as to be able to better relate to it. But then I never thought about it like you have and this video really helps me see it and be able to accept it in a much better light!!!!

To those who say Southern Vietnam is more influenced by SEA culture than the North, thats not true. There are many more Hoa people (VNese people of full or partial Han Chinese ancestry) living in the South than the North. The Hoa people arent considered an ethnic minority because they share many similarities to the Vietnamese culture. There is a whole populated district 5 in HCMC that consists mostly of Hoa people. The Hoa people scatter across many Southern Vietnam regions but in the North you can only find a few of them in Bac Giang and Quang Ninh. Being borned and raised in HCM city with my mother being Hoa as her grandfather migrated from Guangzhou to Vietnam at the end of the Qing Dynasty, I can attest that the South belongs to the East Asian cultural sphere as much as the the North does. There are indeed some remnants of the Champa civilization in Middle Vietnam and Mekong Delta regions and more Khmer people live in the South than in the North, but the Khmers only take up 1,37% of Vietnamese population. Most of Southern Vietnamese are Kinh people who originally came from the North and developed a different dialect overtime. Very rarely there is someone borned from Khmer-Kinh parents because the Khmers mostly marry their own kind. When we talk about cultural sphere, its about the arts, traditions, cuisine, and literature and only very small groups of people in Southern Vietnam celebrate anything related to SEA cultural. Whereas most of the major festivals, traditions and buildings in the South are overwhemingly influenced by East Asian culture. In fact, you can even find much more French influence in HCMC and Da Lat than SEA culture.

Didn't you guys pay attention to the detail he pointed out? If Vietnam didn't have the southward expansion and remained only the northern part, then Vietnam could have been part of east asia geographically, too. The original Vietnamese stock from the north with the influence of the 1000 years under the different Chinese dynasties eat talk and study just like east asians. The video clearly pointed out that belief system, education, and family structure clearly follow Confucius just like China Japan, and Korea. Vietnamese is even closer to china in term of langue features for being tonal, where korean and Japanese are not. Vietnamese and Chinese languages is SVO: Subject Verb Object. Where as korean and Japanese are SOV: Subject Object Verb. Clearly Vietnam without the southern expansion is east asian, period. However after gaining independence in 10th century, the original stock intermarried native central and south Vietnamese such as champa..khemer ( Cambodian). So because of this, central and southern Vietnamese have south east asian admixtures. You can tell this fact by looking at northern viets. They look more like people from honghong or quangxi. Where as central and southern viets still look east asians but some parts looked mixed, giving them a distinct appearance. The sense that Vietnamese feel they also part of southeast asians because of the southern expansion and the intermarriage. Political and geographical labeling don't matter much because if you look at the case of white Americans, they are called Americans but they are genetically European. So just like the author of this video said Vietnamese are east asians.

That's why Sinosphere is the better term for the cultural sphere than East Asia. Mongolia is technically East Asian but cultural wise they are not Sinophere except sinicized Inner Mongolia in China. Vietnam on other hand is part of Sinosphere because heavily sinicized, even ultra nationalist Vietnamese hate it, they can't run away from reality that Vietnam even more sinicized than Korea and Japan.

@@MyMelody5 Or you wish that Vietnam wants to claim to be part of east asia. Tourists from china, japan, korea see the chinese influence in Vietnam. They notice the similarities of certain Vietnamese cultural components similar to theirs such as the use of chopsticks, Confucius in family structure. Politically you think japan korea feel superior to Vietnamese that is why they don't care? That is understandable. Japanese felt superior to the whole Asia back in WW2 anyway. Its not new. Even Japanese and Koreans don't even like each other. And then Chinese hate Japanese. It is a mess. 1. Culturally, Vietnam is Sinospheric as it belongs to Sinosphere (East Asian Cultural Sphere). Vietnamese people had been being affected by Confucism and Daoism, they used to use Hantu (Chinese script, known as Hanja in Korean and Kanji in Japanese) to write their language, their traditional costumes (aodai, aonguthan, aotuthan, aonhatbinh, aogiaolinh) are all fairly similar to other Sinospheric countries. Sinospheric countries use moon calendar, share same festivals and their vocabularies are similar as well. Meanwhile, the rest of mainland SE Asia is culturally affected by India. 2. Geographically, Vietnam is actually Southeast Asian. Despite that, Northern Vietnam’s climate has many similarities with the climate of southern China and can be said to be rather colder than the rest of the SEA. There were records of winter snowfall in most of the region until the 13th century, today the extent of snowfall has narrowed to the northwest.

I’ve been wondering that myself. Besides geography and culture. One thing that separate Mongolians and East Asians is they eat dairy product such as cheese, yogurt, and horse milk alcoholic drink called airag or kumis. So, dairy in their diet makes them more Central Asian.

@OboeWhizzy 3 жыл бұрын
@@Will-sq3ip Some other East Asians eat dairy products too, like how Tibetans also have lots of cheese and milk in their diet. And Vietnamese people eat flan, plus southern Chinese food often has cream or cheese in it too (idk if that's from British influence though)
@Will-sq3ip
@Will-sq3ip 3 жыл бұрын
@@OboeWhizzy I didn’t know Tibetans dairy. I think dairy in East Asian cuisine is kind of recent thing even for a few centuries. Brought in by Western influence. Today, East Asians do eat dairy but not in the more traditional Asian cooking. In fact, I use coconut milk instead (animal) milk because my parents prefer that way, both taste and texture.
@OboeWhizzy
@OboeWhizzy 3 жыл бұрын
@@Will-sq3ip Yeah Tibetans consume a lot of dairy because of the climate they live in and the difficulty of growing crops during some parts of the year. Tibetans mostly consume dairy from bovine livestock and goats/sheep, and they have cream, cheese, and milk in their dishes and drinks! (Disclaimer: I'm not Mongolian myself! But my parents are from a part of China with a large Mongolian population and grew up with lots of classmates and teachers of Mongolian descent) My idea for why Mongolians could be considered a central Asian country instead of East Asian is that it's heavily influenced by Russia, and has adopted Cyrillic script for its language rather than Mongolian script which is only used in Inner Mongolia (part of China). In that regard, I'd say it could be considered similar to a country like Kazakhstan. I guess the difference is that most central Asian countries are Muslim, whereas Mongolia is not. That would put it closer to the Sinosphere or Buddhist-inspired East Asian countries. Geographically, Mongolia also has more similarities with central Asia. It's mostly desert and grassland, and typically has a cold and arid climate, unlike the other East Asian countries. Mongolians also farm and domesticate animals similarly to other central Asian cultures (maybe? I'm not super sure on this). But historically, Mongolia was more often a part of various Chinese empires and kingdoms than independent or a part of Russia. So that would also bring it closer to being East Asian.

Indonesian here. Personally I think from the information given in this video that Vietnam is (for the most part) East Asian, if not at least culturally. This is kinda the problem with defining sub-continents and regions with modern-day political borders - it just isn't representative of the situation most of the time. Anyway love from Indonesia! edit: so a bunch of y'all are telling me Vietnam is definitely southeast Asia. I guess that is a valid point seeing it borders other southeast Asian countries and has some cultural aspects more akin to southeast Asia. I dunno not an expert by any means.

I'm half-Khmer, (technically 3/8ths, with an 8th of Vietnamese thrown in). I've always found Southeast Asia's ethnic diversity to be very interesting. The entire peninsula is heavily culturally influenced by India whereas Vietnam has clearly seen some heavy Sinification over the centuries. I've always attributed that to them being on the coast and maritime trade with China.

“Please leave a comment for the algorithm” hahahahha Not until I’ve moved outside of the region did this topic become relevant in my search to assert my own identity. Previously, I’ve managed to curb nationalism, and if needed I only thought of the Vietnamese as simply Vietnamese, maybe sometimes (rarely) as East Asians for its cultural evidences, also perhaps because contemporary Vietnam presented a ton of cultural imports from the ‘big three’ (Chinese-languages period dramas and literature, Korean drama and music, and Japanese anime, video games, and manga were all ubiquitous in our cultural lives), our mental images and linkages were being built up in my psych. Southeast Asia was only personally associated with the ASEAN, and there’s such little relevance in my life to the point that the name meant nothing else other than a mere political affiliation. So yes, the Vietnamese people (người Kinh), along with their country, Vietnam, were East Asian, per my answer, whenever the topic got brought up, prior to being told repeatedly we were Southeast Asian by Westerners, who proceeded to greet me in the Thai way and talked to me about Thailand, all of which weirded the fuck out of me. Then I realized the ramifications of this oversimplified grouping of countries and peoples, the effects it has on outsiders’ understandings, attitude, and even possible investment interests. I hope the intricacies finally got out into people’s heads, that reducing countries and peoples to nuanced simplistic words deducts the overall picture from your view and undermines peoples’ own identification of themselves, and I thank you for an extensive research, respectful insights, and clear presentation, even though some small details can be further discussed, clarified, or corrected. Hopefully the peoples of Vietnam will one day straighten themselves out, and be able to put their (our) own unique identity onto the world, which will undoubtedly have to recognize us as we are.

Interesting to hear your views, thank you. By the way, wouldn't you say that combining different cultures creates a new unique culture of its own anyway? Like how American culture is it's own separate thing but is really just a combination of British, German, Spanish/Mexican and Carribbean culture. Vietnamese people and culture seen quite unique to me, but I'm not Vietnamese and don't know enough about the culture to say for certain. So I'm not saying either way, only positing a question. What I do know is that British culture was just a combination of French/European culture and Viking/Scandanavian culture but is clearly its own thing now, since culture drifts and changes over time and gains new character. Perhaps that is why I find Vietnam interesting even though I'm not Vietnamese and don't live in Vietnam.

I am a black lay Sinologist. Been interested in China and the Far East because of that legend (Bruce Lee 李小龙), who hit and left our world ever so shortly. Interestingly, I also view Vietnam as somewhat as close to China as it is to the South East. The Viet people are even mentioned in Chinese Classics that date back to the 1st and 2nd Century AD. And a Vietnamese Genius, Master Nguyễn An (阮安) was majorly involved in the architecture and building Forbidden City in Beijing during the Ming (明) dynasty. @Miranda lambert First off, the lady clearly said he participated in the design and construction. She did not say it was only him. Eunuch was invented by Chinese in the first place if my memory serves me right. It's fair to say thousands of Chinese eunuches way before him and only one Anam eunuch who was forced it was much better than voluntary compared to Chinese eunuch. In the old time, Chinese were stronger and colonized weaker and smaller Vietnam and tried so hard to assimilate. And that's what it was in the course of history. We are still standing. Han Chinese successfully assimilated lots of tribes in China but it failed terribly for 1000 years. We know you're stronger economically and military but we still have our country, language unlike Southern tribes Teo Chew, Cantonese, Hai Nan were totally assimilated forced to speak Mandarin. Regarding borrowing, we all borrow from somewhere to progress. Japan, Korea borrow. China is not an exception. Don't tell me China doesn't copy from western military technologies, Russian spaceship, submarine, western skyscrapers, expressway, airports, western medical diagnostics and surgies. Doesn't China today wear western clothing style in daily activities?

Actually, the origin of the people is not so important, but the important thing is that the Vietnamese have been annexed by China for over 4000 years and are influenced by Confucianism. In fact, the East Asian countries are also divided into many ethnic groups, but they have one thing in common, they are developed by Confucianism and by a very important idea of Confucius that is "Only the learning path can help people rise up" . And Vietnam is no exception if you come to Vietnam you will see their culture such as traditional costumes, using lunar days and celebrating lunar new year, festivals, using a lot of kanji adapted words..., ant architecture: temples, pagodas, rural houses... ,education, textbooks, exams, university exams with subjects like Chinese "Gao Kao"..., so in Vietnam they only have a position in Southeast Asia while culture, education, lifestyle ... are considered East Asians.

Hello! A Vietnamese here, thank you for your extensive summary of Vietnams affair with this. I have to say that the terms "East Asia" and "Southeast Asia" themselves span so many cultural regions specific to provinces and smaller cities/villages, that for example, even though Vietnam is geographically Southeast Asia, Kinh Viet/Vietnamese culture has largely been Sinicized, thus makes us more "East Asian", but Viets who live further down Central and South regions will grow up interacting with significant Malayo-Austronesian cultural elements, due to the concentration of our Austronesian minor ethnic groups there, like Cham people. You could say some South Vietnam provinces/autonomous regions are more "Southeast Asian". It depends, just as how it is more accurate to classify Mongolia, Korea, Japan + its occupied islands and part of Northern China as Northeast Asia due to a more specific cultural sphere there. After all, it doesn't matter to me that Vietnam has to be either East or Southeast Asian, but it does matter that Viets know how to identify their unique mix of cultures and not mistake our identities for anything else. :)

@@user-zz3tb3xe6b There have not been any large projects on Y-haplogroup to have reliable results; even if there is, it would overestimate the Nguyen family name and yield wrong results, for in reality someone with Nguyen family name is overwhelmingly more likely to not be a Vietnamese genetically, because during colonial period the French recorded a lot of people without surname, thus not a Vietnamese, as Nguyen. However, from what I have read (several papers) the results seem to be similar to Han Chinese: 50 ~ 60% O2a. The difference is that, whereas for Chinese the rest is somewhat equally distributed between various other haplogroups, for Vietnamese about 20~30% is O1b. For referrence, Thais in China are 50~60% O1b. Some clarity on mtDNA: Actually, two components can be indentified and dated; one major component (80%+) is the same as Chinese in the South (Hunan, JiangXi,...); the other is Thai-Indonesian which can be dated to about 400 years ago, coinciding with the major Southern Expansion.

I took a DNA test 23andMe and these were my 1st results: vietnamese: 89.3% indonesian, thai, khmer, and myanmar (idk what that means): 4.1% chinese (mostly guangdong): 1.9% broadly chinese and southeast asian: 4.1% broadly central asian, northern indian and pakistani: .2% Broadly European: .1% Unassigned: .3% 2nd results: 99.7% Viet 0.2% northern Indian and pakistani 0.1% unassigned My dad looks east asian or south chinese while my mom looks southeast asian, yet I'm 100% vietnamese. My dad has that yellow peach east Asian skin while my mom is kinda light brown tan. I notice my skin is a mix, but I look like a different color in different lighting. My brother doesn't look similar to me My DNA relatives also usually are basically 100% of an ethnicity (China, Korea, Japan, etc.), like me. Though most of my DNA relatives from Thailand are part Chinese (30-100%, the rest being "indonesian, thai, khmer, and myanmar etc" or ~30% Chinese Dai). That percentage goes for my other ethnic relatives (laos,cambodia,hk,indonesian, etc.) With a wide percentage split like that. I think it's true cause the Thai kpop idols I see, such Minnie from (G)I-DLE and Ten from NCT identify as Thai but are Chinese. I don't think Lisa from Blackpink is Chinese though 23andMe gets more accurate the more people use it. I notice east Asia, especially north, have a taller elegant look to them. Idk how to describe. I consider china being the main and the surrounding smaller countries as offshoots btw, cause it's the biggest country middle and in population. I consider vietnam a very diverse nation (ethnic groups, species, landscapes, etc.) and I dont think that's necessarily a bad thing. That goes for other countries surrounding china too. Though Chinese, Korean, and Japanese people look similar, I notice Vietnamese have a wider separation of looks from them. I consider vietnam the east Asian-influenced country in Southeast Asia I also watch other videos regarding ASEAN, and some comments say Vietnam is east asian, so why are they included in the video? But east asian people see Vietnam as southeast asian. So I feel like have an identity crisis, and maybe other Vietnamese people feel the same way too

Absolutely, true @@ThanhNguyen-xf9dl! Although Cantonese cuisine is generally less oily than many other regions, Chinese cuisine is generally heavier than Korean and Vietnamese cuisines. A well-made beef broth is a hallmark for both Korean and Vietnamese cuisines, as are two of the best marinated grilled meats! When whenever I dine at a Vietnamese restaurant, I find it hard to pass up on ordering Vietnamese Lemongrass Grilled Beef or Pork, which are like aromatic versions of Korean Beef or Pork Gal-bi. Another favorite is Bánh Xèo, which is thinner and crisp parallel to Korean Jeon that we make at home (thinner and crisp-edged versus the chunky, rustic traditional versions).

There are Champa and Khmer ethnic minorities in Vietnam whom aren't able to differentiate between Vietnamese culture and Chinese one , hence they mistake Indianized culture as root for Vietnamese rather than Sinosphere-influnenced . Even to some extent using the term Mon-khmer (refering to mainland SEA people) to prescribe Vietnamese origin as they were Hindus or Theravada Buddhist , even Muslim , which clearly at 1st glance they aren't . It would be concise that they are refering to aboriginal inhabitants whom had always resided within the Red River Delta region before Viet people migrated there The Vietnamese' ancestors were inhabitants in the now Southern China region , but throughtout Chinese expansion (refering to the Qin Shihuang dysnasty that started the campaign) , many tribes were forced out of the region , Ouyue and Louyue were the first to migrate to the Red River Delta region and established the Van Lang empire . The Vietnamese conquest starts from here , going through mostly defending their territory , being annexed and reclaimed , to then have its' own southern expansion , making the country stretched as long as today , curving the natural borderline which are protected by mountains from its' neighbor

The ancient Royal Families of Vietnam - Nguyen, Tran and Le or Ly were originally Chinese Clans, supposedly from Fujian Province, who moved into Coastal North Vietnam in the first Millenium AD, when it was still under Chinese control. They brought advanced fishing technologies with them and soon grew wealthy and inter-married with the local Viet. They were the ones who had the wealth and power to finally overthrow Chinese Control and become Independent. But these Clans still maintained Chinese Ruling System, Customs and Language in their Imperial Courts. Over 40% of the Vietnamese male Y-Chromosome is of Chinese origin - and that may extend back to the first Chinese Military Colonies in the 2nd-1st centuries BC, where the Chinese Soldiers inter-married with the local Au-Lac women from the Bai-Yue Tribes. The ancient Lac cultures may have been Matrilineal, and there seems to be a tradition of greater Female Autonomy and Leadership that the later mixed (Kinh) offspring maintained - see the Trung Sisters Rebellion against China, led by Female Generals. BUT, while (some of) the Vietnamese (Kinh) may acknowledge their Chinese Ancestry - they have always maintained their desire for Independence from Chinese.

I like this video overall but I think you're missing one big factor. Every country has its own unique history of warfare, expansion, displacements, etc. Take a country like the US. The East coast are different from the West, which are different still from the Southern region. So if you did a video on the US which region would you say is the real US? With that being said, geographically Vietnam is clearly SEA, but anyone who spend any amount of time in the country and know its history will quickly learn Vietnam is can easily fit into East Asian culture with pockets of regional cultures. The ultimate answer for this video is Vietnamese people see themselves as Vietnamese, with cultural and regional influence.
