Sam Nelson is proud of his service in Vietnam. But he had one of the most dangerous jobs there. Now, a Purple Heart recipient, he tells what happened underground.

Vietnam was an extremely unnecessary war. But to spit on the soldiers that were forced to fight while you’re in the comfort of the USA is gross. Blame the politicians not the brave men who had to fight

More volunteered than drafted, they were treated that way because they killed babies and more war crimes.

Ikr!!!! Like it’s not about pride these men witnessed horrific things a lot died, and the ones that did come back either killed themselves or had to endure being judged for defending for their trouble, smh. my dad fought in the Korean War and Vietnam. He was not a nice man and now I see why.

Eddie Wise from Delta Pennsylvania was a little guy who often wrote his mother saying how terrified he was going into those tunnels. He said he was ordered to because he was the smallest in his platoon in the 28th Div. He died in a tunnel from small arms fire ( an AK47). He name is on the Wall in DC and inside the Main Hall of North Harford High School in Pylesville Maryland. RIP Eddie

My friend was a runnel rat in vietnam. I knew him years and upon his return hes never been the same. Hes not a guy to ask for help either... but you can tell, by his silence alone, hes already dead inside. Sad. What the men of vietnam went thru, theres no amount of gratitude that could ever repay them for their service.

My dad won't even speak to me or my mom about what happened to him in Vietnam. He refuses to talk about it. It's almost like a parent that's an alcoholic and there's this shame or secret about it. I'm the same way with my wife about my rime in Iraq. I know it had to be worse for him because he didn't have the technology equipment we have now to make things easier.

The bravery that these men had is just beyond words to do them the respect and admiration that they without a doubt are entitled to even the thought of doing what they did time after time I believe they all every one are very rare and special men of extreme valour just the claustrophobia alone would be more than ninety nine percent of men could manage its shameful how all the men were treated on there return how do people who have no clue of the hardships trauma and horror a lot of the troops went through think the have the right to judge how the troops got through there postings most who criticised there actions would be broken in a day surrounded by hate would for sure have a huge factor in reaction to stressful situations on a massive scale don’t be an armchair warrior it’s shameful I salute Everyman who served in Vietnam

That lavender uniform? Never saw that in any Branch of the service, I guess uniform something he had made up? I think it sounds true, skeptical of skin pealing off with socks and not getting any medical treatment, infantry live by their feet. At least awards were real, and not a poop load of ribbons like most fake hero’s, I believe he is genuine, just proud of his service now. I wouldn’t have volunteered to be a tunnel rat, it is terrifying just to think about it. Vietnam Vet, 18 months, 1969-1970, and somehow did not have any protestors to deal with, and as I was flying from LA to Va we were snowed in at Chicago and the airline crew put me up in a hotel and took me out to dinner, I get teared up now as I think how wonderful that crew was to me.

It is not military sanctioned dress. However it is a civilian dress and he is part of or in a leadership role in some kind of purpleheart society. That is why it is purple. He also drives a purple 70s model restored chevy truck with some kind of purple heart society sign on the door, could not quite make it out as it was in the background of him and a tad blurry. I am guessing it is strictly for special occasions, anniversaries and parades and things like that.

I thought the same about his uniform and story to be frank. my father was in Vietnam as an airborne ranger and would say the same... if skin was peeling off his feet he wouldn't be on patrol... period.. and his uniform? completely made up... I've been around hundreds of Vietnam vets over the years through meeting them with my father and BECER seen a uniform like that unless it was some kind of stolen Valor situation and there was plenty of wannabes that were easy to spot with their medals that didn't check out. He used to call it "fruit salad"
