Vietnam veterans Gene Murphy and Lyle Bowes of Sioux Falls remain lifelong friends, bonded by the experiences they shared and the tragedy of war.
Gene Murphy was wounded in action while in Vietnam. Despite months of hospitalization and incurable paralysis of his legs, Murphy went on to build a family and hold prominent leadership positions serving the needs of veterans and their families in the region and at the national level. The experience changed his life and after recovering he devoted his life to helping other wounded veterans. Murphy joined DAV (Disabled American Veterans) in 1970 and became increasingly active in the organization. He served as national commander of DAV from 1987 to 1988, advocating for veterans of all wars all the way to the highest levels of government. In 1998, Murphy was elected treasurer of the Disabled Veterans’ Life Memorial Foundation, and continues to serve as secretary/treasurer.
Postcards created a short-form documentary with Murphy and Bowes which can be viewed here: • Bonded by Sacrifice | ...

I went through basic training and was with Gene's platoon in Vietnam for over 10 months. He is the epitome of a true American hero both in Vietnam and for the service he has provided to other veterans over the years. It was an honor to serve with him and I am proud to call him my brother and a lifelong friend.

Thank you for your comment. The truth is that we went at a young age to do a job that many shunned or shied away from by other means. Being in Vietnam most of us hated the war and despised being in it but we did the job as best we could. It is fine to hate the war but never hate the warrior.@@chrishensley6745

I’m 62 and I planned on joining the Marines. Then I saw how they treated our service men and women. I’m from Hialeah Florida, I never saw anyone say anything negative towards the veterans coming home. This is a great man.

Just watched the interview with Lyle Bowes yesterday, then stumbled across this interview. Mr Bowes is the soldier that dug the hole, gave him caps of water all night, gave him morphine, etc all night. Cool to hear both their perspectives!

The DAV has vans here in Arizona to transport folks from my clinic in Kingman to hospitals and appointments. Fortunately I am still able physically and financially to drive myself. The VA's Community Care program has been a blessing in allowing my to have my Agent Orange exposure problems treated locally. May God Bless you!

Thank you for remembering him. I was his squad leader for the three months he served in Vietnam. He was a true American hero and if the first medivac helicopter had been successful I truly believe he would be here today, He always had a contagious smile for us and he was affectionately nicknamed "Farmboy."

Welcome home Murph. I served with the Ivy Division 2003-04 OIF 1. Shame you still have to fight for us against politicians/VA for our benefits. They didn’t care about the cost when they sent us overseas. They couldn’t sleep on the ground for a night. Let alone a year.

Watch both interviews , very touching story of true friendship and comradeship, two genuine hero’s , an inspiration to us all , if only more folks bonded like this pair we’d have a wonderful world , I salute 🫡 their service , I’m dual national 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🇺🇸 my father 🇺🇸 served in the military , he was an M P and guarded the nazis at the Nuremberg trials , one of his brothers landed at Omaha , a forward artillery observer (decorated) and another brother sailed his LST into Omaha 9 times , first wave included , his first load in , when the ramp dropped he lost most of the troops to machine gun fire and had to return to the mothership full of corpses , lest we forget eh ?
