I cant stop listening to these vet's stories

My similar story at Da Nang. Monkey Mountain, Boom Boom Rock. Cable construction worker, US Army. Always on our own 7 man team. Fire fights were fought w/o assistance. We were armed to the teeth. We'd sometimes run the telephone wires from one compound to another without connecting them to anything. Another team would hook the wires up to other places within the compounds. We were strickly field workers, outside the gates. Ran telephone cables and field wire all over I Corp '66. Welcome home.

Just like anywhere you visit, if you haven't been there you don't know what it's like. As a Canadian I listen to this series and others to hear what it was like from those who were there.

How prophetic the words 'we don't overthrow our governments' were. Fascinating series these interviews, I listen to them as I work.

I really enjoyed hearing his whole story. I learned alot of things that I had not known about the Vietnam war from this man.

You did an incredible service to everyone you interviewed and to history in chronicling the stories of their service Darrell.

I really appreciated McMurty's viewpoint and incredible story. His intelligence and commitment to the work really stand out. I've watched nearly every one of these videos (save for one or two that seem to be unavailable/unlisted, and while it's not a competition, I think this is one of the most interesting in terms of the tales he tells. I did not work with many Vietnam vets but when I do meet vets I do not usually bring up the subject. I left that to them to talk about what they were wanting to talk about. Out of not wanting to cause them any distress. I am very interested in the Vietnam war and lots of other US military history. As well as Australians and New Zealanders. It was not from a lack of interest or lack of care. Thanks for your stories. I have recommended your talks to my sons that are now in the Australian army. They are both smarter and fitter than me so they should make good soldiers. But I am happy they are communication REMFs. Though still well trained for field operations. One advantage Australians had during the war was very effective jungle warfare training and usually as formed units. The Australian SAS did the kind of operations the LRRPs did. The AATTV, training team Vietnam, did lots of training and running of South Vietnamese forces. Including mountain tribes operating from remote bases. They were very successful and won 4 VCs. Only 4 in Vietnam. 2 Posthumously. The Australian deployments grew quite large for the forces needed for Phuoc Tuy province North of Saigon close to Vung Tau. But sometimes deployed to other regions and sometimes operations with US units. Over 500 Australians died in Vietnam and many died later with problems like PTSD. Which is still a problem with recent Australian operations. As with US veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. The war could not be won because US forces could not occupy the North without escalating a much larger conflict with China and possibly the Soviets. There are many theories about why the war was lost but that is the most significant. They used the same tactics as George Washington in the Revolutionary war. Washing just had to keep the army running to make the British to give up as not worth the effort. Victories were not the priority for Washington. Keeping his army going was his goal. Australian forces used experience from WW2 and Malaya to develop effective tactics. Australian operations were generally more stealthy. Trying to gain the initiative and confusing the VC/NVA. Many young Australians were conscripts which did very well during the war. They also had support from New Zealand forces. Take care. Please maintain social distancing as much as you can. My mother has been isolated at home with family support. The crisis is far from over despite claims it has past.

The reason we were involved in Nam was to curtail the communist dominos in Asia from happening, but at the same time it was a political conflict/war which we handcuffed ourselves so not to escalate it with bringing in the soviet and Chinese soldgers

Dan, Thanks for your comments. I can't give you a definitive answer as to whether the film still exists or not, but I'd like to think "Mike" held on to the film; especially after we found out who was being kept prisoner. As to your other questions--Yes, the issues should be raised, but I believe the questions would be lost in the rhetoric of the answer and we still wouldn't know the reasons for our actions/involvement.

Where’s the film today of the detained SVietnam officer? Would be great historical footage.

They ran the FRench out of Saigon in 1954, I would love to know how we got our noses stuck back in there by the 60s. You know they did not welcome us , so how many people died when we were not even "officially" there?
