My plan is to put more effort on pronunciation, since I have watched most Vietnamese-teaching videos and there are not many good ones working in Pronunciation. So in next videos I will do some videos on pair sounds, rhymes and tones, etc. Hope to get your full support :) Thank you Jim :)

As you noticed, my mouth did close when pronounce "không". And you are also right - because of that it sounds so similar to "khôm". Native speakers sometimes have to ask again to confirm which sound they have just heard :)

starting at 2:18, hearing the pronunciation of the VN word, combined with showing what the word means in English, is a GREAT idea! Learning pronun. & vocab. at same time, thumbs up!

Hi Annie, I want to tell you how helpful, comprehensive and clear your videos are. I have just started to learn Vietnamese and it's a bit of a minefield on the net, what with Northern and Southern dialects... I really appreciate your systematic approach and ESPECIALLY your care in pointing out the differences between Northern and Southern dialects and how these relate to spelling. Thank you! ... Hey! Only 3 vowels i, ê, and a can come before final consonants -nh and -ch, so we have 6 rhymes: inh/ich, ênh/êch, and anh/ach. In the South, for these 6 rhymes, we replace -nh with -n and -ch with -t. However, when doing so, the vowels are also shortened or more back, so inh/ich sound like -ưn/-ưt, ênh/êch sound like ơn/ơt and anh/ach sound like ăn/ăt. (ư is more back than i, ơ is more back than ê, and ă is shorter than a).

I have to agree with Jack. I also really like the fact that you explain the Southern as well as the Northern dialect. And that you encourage to use the full set of tones instead of being lazy ;P I'm interested in the Northern dialect, which is very hard to find. By far, the most lessons (on KZfaq as well as anywhere else) are in the southern dialect.

Implosive indeed - To me it sounds like people are speaking backwards like the sound of record being played backwards. At first I'm finding it incredibly difficult as a Westerner but only one week of listening to teachers like Annie I'm actually finding it easier and easier. I currently live in Hawaii and have plenty of Vietnamese communities to practice with and very excited to do so maybe in another week.

I would make several videos just to explain what you asked :) In short: 1 + 2. Than - Thang, Ban - Bang obviously sound different (for Northern acccent; for Southern, they are the same). Thanh - Banh are different from the others because the main vowel is "e" despite the writing. Final sounds "nh/ch" (they are "ng/c" actually) only go with "i, ê, e", and because these are front vowels, they "pull" ng/c towards, making ng/c become more in the middle of the tongue.

The final consonants -n and -t are pronounced as -ng and -c in the South - yes but not always! You can ask your wife to pronounce these words: tin, mít, lên, hết, hôn, một to see -n and -t DO NOT change to -ng and -c (but the vowel i in tin, mít will sound like ư, ê in lên, hết will sound like ơ, and ô in hôn, một will make -n/-t be pronounced with close and rounded lips). Where IS the video on diphthongs? I saw the one on vowels -- part 2 of that was supposed to be on diphthongs but it doesn't seem to exist. Unless I'm missing something? Anyway, everything else you've done is extremely helpful. Thanks. :)

Annie (Anh), your distinction between how certain foreigners pronounce the "m" at the end of "Viet Nam" and the proper pronunciation is puzzling to me, in that I don't think I've ever heard the "m" pronounced in a long, drawn-out way ("Nammmm") the way you did, by anyone--"foreigners"/Westerners, or otherwise--e.g., by an English-speaking person. (That is, using the "explosion or coda" you were talking about.) I'm wondering if you're referring to when a foreigner/Westerner is first learning to speak Vietnamese, and in that context (for some reason) when saying "Viet Nam" he/she says the country name more slowly or drawn out, as "Viet Nammmmm"? To me though, it's common sense (even as an English speaker) that the "m" ISN'T drawn out, despite what you were saying. BTW, love your videos. :)

Hello again. As you recall, I have been frustrated with the ending sound "nh". In the northern dialect, it gets pronounced as "ng". The name Linh is pronounced in the north as Ling. However, in the southern dialect, the "nh" sounds like "nh", but the main vowel sound is changed. Minh or Linh are pronounced as "Munh" or "Lunh". Is there any dialect that maintains the main vowel sound and also maintains the "nh" sound? Thanks again.

3 + 4. I guess you know how to pronounce Tết - Hệt. For Tếch - Hệch, final sounds ng/c are pulled towards as preceded by front vowel "ê", so they become more in the middle of the tongue (nh/ch) than something back of tongue as origin ng/c. In general, to pronounce inh/ich, ênh/êch, anh/ach, you pronounce i/e/ê with nh/ch - just like ng/c but a bit forward to the middle of the tongue. Hope you will survive :D

Hi Annie!! Why in Thanh and Banh the main vowel is "e"? What is the rule? I live in the Mekong Delta and often regular "a" is pronounced like "e", why so? Thank you for your help, your lessons are great!!

In lesson 7, what do you mean that the only final vowel sounds are /I/ and /w/? What about nhà. Nhe. Như. Bộ. Etc.

Stephen Rothman When I talk about final vowels, I mean when we have a vowel combination. A single vowel (or a diphthong) will combine with a vowel at the final position, for example: au, ao, ai, ay, etc. Of course we have many words with one single vowel, as you have listed some, but they technically don't have a final sound.

I think maybe this is the explanation: ấy goes with các bạn to mean "those friends." I think I saw in some of Annie's other materials that you can use "ấy" after something to refer to it again. Like if I wanted to say "give it to her," I can say give it to "cô ấy." (Cô as in the Vietnamese word for a woman your aunt's age and ấy to refer to her again.) So in this paragraph when it says "các bạn ấy" it is refering to the friends again that she just introduced in the previous sentence. The word đều then makes it so that you're refering to all of them. I think when you use đều between the subject and verb or between the subject and an adjective, it indicates that "all" of the subject(s) do that verb or all of the subject(s) are that adjective. In this paragraph, all of those friends know how to speak Vietnamese. So ấy đều is not a word. They are two separate words that serve separate functions. Hopefully a better Vietnamese speaker can refine this explanation if I'm wrong.

is there any difference between the two crowded words: tap nap and dong duc? Sounds like the sentence duong pho rat tap nap, dong duc is streets are crowded, crowded

xBakaPeterx To me, they are the same. Tấp nập sounds just a little bit more fancy, but you could use both as alternatives.

It is pretty common in written Vietnamese to stack words that have the same meaning.
