Traditional Vietnamese music is highly diverse and syncretistic, combining native and foreign influences. Throughout its history, Vietnam has been most heavily impacted by the Chinese musical tradition, as an integral part, along with Korea, Mongolia and Japan.[1] The ancient Indochinese kingdom of Champa also had a very significant historical effect upon this music, because the Vietnamese court found it intriguing.
Nhã nhạc is the most popular form of imperial court music, specifically referring to the court music played from the Trần Dynasty to the very last Nguyễn Dynasty of Vietnam, being synthesized and most highly developed by the Nguyễn emperors. It is based on earlier Vietnamese imperial court music, its primary influences coming from Ming Dynasty's imperial court and later the music of Champa. Along with nhã nhạc, the imperial court of Vietnam in the 19th century also had many royal dances which still exist to this day. The theme of most of these dances is to wish the kings longevity and the country wealth.

I am Senegalese Vietnamese, I feel the Sudanese sounds in these melodies and I deeply thank my grandmother for instilling in me this magnificent culture which is that of Vietnam, growing up and studying, I now understand this African influence in this sweet music of Vietnam in view of the black indigenous people who built this civilization. I love you Grandma.❤️

@@harrisonthomas5723 Wow, my posts were six years ago. Vietnamese instruments are slightly different from Chinese version although I can't tell the difference because I'm not an expert. But overall these instruments are similar. The music itself is also very similar to Chinese but I'm sure it's not Chinese. As compared with Korean and Japanese traditional music, Vietnamese traditional music is more close to Chinese one.

To one who is confused that it is the music of China or not. The song in this video is "Hoa thơm bướm lượn" which is in the collection of folk songs of Bắc Ninh province in Vietnam. This genre of music is called "Quan Họ Bắc Ninh" in Vietnam and was recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage practice in 2009. Here comes the song sung in Vietnamese: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aN2gf9B_usC5fWg.html

I'm a korean not a viet so I might not have the qualification for such discussion, but honestly, saying that vietnam wasn't influenced by china would be pretty much not true. Korea and Japan was highly influenced by China, and so did Vietnam.. And honestly, vietnamese music sounds much more closer to chinese music although all four countries use similiar instruments. Saying that a country was influenced by another isn't something offensive, but something very natural. Culture circulates through

yep tbh at first I thought it was Chinese music cuz the sound and instruments look soooo similar, but upon further inspection there are some differences a good example of the shared culture is the stringed instrument in the video that the girl is plucking: the chinese version is the Guzheng, the japanese version is the koto, and the Korean version is the gayageum

Vietnamese music usually has higher pitch than Chinese music. I do not deny that our traditional music is greatly influenced by our neighbor, actually many Asian country's culture are similar to China, too, that's the truth. But beside the musical instruments that are developed based on Chinese instrument, I can claim that VN has many unique instrument such as the Đàn Bầu (monochord), Đàn đáy and many ethnic instruments.

Vietnam's music did get influenced by us,but I think this is not a drawback . Just like “Zither”,even this instrument originated in China, but Vietnam Korea Japan all have their own style zither . Just because we for countries are very close geographically, culture diffusion cannot be avoided . However this diffusion actually has less disadvantages,u all absorbed our positive culture and remained your own original culture didn't it?

You're funny because you assume that my ethnicity is Chinese xd. Tell me, the french colonized Vietnam for less than 100 years. When the French left, they influenced Vietnam with the banh mi thit and churches. Where do you think Vietnamese people got the baguette from? Tell me, where did Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica Catholic church come from? Colonial architecture in some Vietnamese homes are evident, as I saw some in my families homes. You're telling me that China, who took over Vietnam for nearly 1000 years didn't influence Vietnam? You're an ignorant person. I don't research chinese names that derived from Vietnam, so I wouldn't know. That has nothing to do with culture, I think you really hate China or you're just nationalistic.

The Wagakki band from Japan mixes traditional Japanese folk music with western, pop, rock, jazz, metal, etc. Is there any musicians in Vietnam mixing traditional Vietnamese folk music with western styles of music?

punk 2008 there are a lot artists who combine traditional music and western influences. Let’s check out these following videos on KZfaq: 1. Banh Troi Nuoc by Hoang Thuy Linh. 2. Noi Lai Tinh Xua by Nhu Quynh and Manh Quynh. The two songs have very distinct styles depending how much is ‘traditional’ or ‘modern’.

I think Vietnamese comes the Chinese regions of Canton oyster Hong Kong which is han Chinese are not from so it has wide differences with their music coz it's hotter than yellow river valley it's much lively and faster than han Chinese music and you can't say Chinese influenced Vietnamese just because they're almost the .same !!!Chinese may had also borrowed some from them am i right?^_^
