Sorry, but there's no way someone could live in SoCal even one winter and not see snow, let alone 30 years. I grew up in the Midwest and have lived in SoCal for ten years. My relatives back east ask me if I miss snow in the winter, and I say nope, if I want to see snow in the winter all I have to do is look up, and there it is on the mountains, all the snow I want to see. Several times during the winter the mountains around L.A. are snow covered, and it's not unusual for us to get at least one winter storm where the snow level gets down onto the foothills or even into the valleys. Last winter at our elevation we had a 4" snowfall that stayed on the ground for about 48 hours. So anyone in SoCal can see snow just about anytime they want in the winter, and be standing knee deep in it within an hour or so if desired. Just get in the car and drive up the hill to Idyllwild, Big Bear, or Arrowhead, then when you get tired of it, drive back down the hill and you don't have to deal with it. I don't do that, however, because I've seen enough snow to last me a lifetime, but I could. A quick Google shows pages of SoCal snow scene photos from over the years - www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&q=photo%20of%20LA%20with%20snow%20in%20the%20background&tbs=imgo:1#imgrc=jiwLe2RkZDqECM

I'm a California native that lived in Louisville for 24 years. I had left Cali, and the Family to launch out on my own. I came to KY in 1983 not knowing a soul. Driving back from work in Bardstown one December afternoon, this song came on the radio. It pulled at my heartstrings a bit, and inspired me to reconnect with my family. That simple incident had a domino effect that led me to move back to Nevada in 2007, to run the family business. It all started with this haunting song, and brown leaves on a cold and grey Kentucky winter's day.

I was in a monastery when this song first came out. We call it a desert experience because we did not listen to the radio or watch tv. I’ve loved music and it was difficult for me giving up pop music. When a group of novices entered to join our community four of them sang this song for us. It blew me away. I did eventually leave and filled my life with music. 3000 LPs and 5200 CDs latter, I listen to world music and share it on FB with friends. I love this song. One third of the collection is classical, one third jazz and the rest is everything else.

Native Californian born in 1960. California back then was a quite different place than it is now. It was the land of dreams. There were millions of people moving there from all over the country for the good paying plentiful jobs, affordable real estate (homes were cheaper here than back east), nice weather (along the coast) and a chance to start over. There were only half as many people as there are now. Plus politically it was much more balanced (Ronald Reagan was governor). So yeah, California Dreaming was definitely a real thing. Its a bit shocking to see how much its changed in my lifetime. Not for the better imo.

That's actually an alto flute, played by a jazz saxophone and flute player named Bud Shank who was big in the 50s and 60s in the West Coast Jazz scene. He improvised that whole solo on the spot, supposedly in one take. A regular flute will not go down to the lowest notes played at the beginning of the solo.

The Mamas & the Papas were a folk rock vocal group formed in Los Angeles, California, which recorded and performed from 1965 to 1968. The group was a defining force in the music scene of the counterculture of the 1960s. The group consisted of Americans John Phillips, Cass Elliot, and Michelle Phillips and Canadian Denny Doherty. Their sound was based on vocal harmonies arranged by John Phillips, the songwriter, musician, and leader of the group, who adapted folk to the new beat style of the early 1960s. The Mamas & the Papas released five studio albums and 17 singles over four years, six of which made the Billboard top 10, and have sold close to 40 million records worldwide. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 for its contributions to the music industry. The band reunited briefly to record the album People Like Us in 1971 but had ceased touring and performing by that time. Some of their most popular singles include "California Dreamin'", "Monday, Monday", and "Dedicated to the One I Love". Wilson Phillips is an American pop group formed in Los Angeles in 1989. The group consists of Chynna Phillips, the daughter of John and Michelle Phillips of the Mamas & the Papas and Carnie Wilson and Wendy Wilson, the daughters of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. Their 1990 eponymous debut album sold over 10 million copies worldwide and included five major US hit singles, four of which went Top 10 (three of those to number one) on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1990, the group won the Billboard Music Award for Hot 100 Single of the Year for their song "Hold On", and was nominated for five Grammy Awards and two American Music Awards.

All of you might be young; but you have an old soul, so refreshing to say the least. Kudos to all three of you!😉

The album cover over your heads was once rare to see. The fist records issued looked like that, but someone decided that showing the toilet was not right. So they put a sticker on all of the album covers. If you tried to remove the sticker, it ruined the image of the toilet. As a result, an album showing the toilet became very collectible.

jethro tull featured the flute in some songs, and he looked like a jester with the tights he'd wear sometimes.

Love how the big sound of this recording envelopes you. Love how Denny bends his notes. And the slow awkward death of the Flute Loops joke .........

Singing harmonies was made famous by The Everly Brothers in the 1950's. Many groups including Simon and Garfunkel, The Mamas & The Papas, The Beatles, The Beach Boys all sang harmonies because of the Everly Brothers.

Defining song and also group of the 60's, this song is iconic Americana.......my time growing up the 60-70's and so many great concerts that I attended, too bad I cannot remember all them due to what was in the air at that time!!! I had to inhale!!!!

A great song with a flute solo is by Chicago called Colour my world. It was a wedding staple for many years after it was released as a single. You should do a reaction to that. Terry Kath sings lead on it! The bass line sounds like a stand up bass and is fantastic! Amazing song!

Groovy choice, fellas! I consider “California Dreamin’” the national anthem of the 60’s. It’s especially poignant to hear it when all the leaves are brown…

This song started a movement of hippies to Huiet/Ashbury in LA in California. Everybody in America seemed to feel it in the air. I know my sister, and I felt it, and we were going to go in her old Chevy, but we didn't have the money.

There are interesting connections from the off spring of this group. John and Michelle had a daughter together - Chynna Phillips who also became a singer/musician. She joined with the daughters of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys to form the group, Wilson Phillips. Also John had a daughter (with another woman) who was named MacKenzie Phillips. She became an actress and was on the hit sitcom One Day at a Time. Her co-star was Valerie Bertinelli who later married Eddie Van Halen. Mama Cass Elliott also had a daughter who became a musician. She toured with one of the Beach Boys, Al Jardine.
