He (being Danish) actually brought Sweden and Norway "into" the LOTR films too as he spoke swedish to Arwen at the place with bilbo's trolls when she takes Frodo on her horse and Norwegian when he calms Brego in the stables of Rohan. Class act indeed

I have a really funny story about Viggo Mortensen. Many years ago (2012), there was a Paint horse riding event at the stable, where my brother in law´s horses lived. It was a veeery small village in Germany, with maybe 100 inhabitants. We watched the event, which took place in a riding arena. Short before the award ceremony my brother in law said: I don´t want to stay for it, let´s go home. And I agreed. So we left the stands. When we were standing at the gate and behind a 2 meters high wood door to the riding arena, the speaker said: The award ceremony will be held by the chairman of the Paint horse organisation Viggo Mortensen from Denmark. And I was like: "Whhaaaaaat?" I asked my brother in law: "Did he just say Viggo Mortensen?????" And he replied: "no clue, who is he?" I said: "It´s an American actor from Lord of the Rings!" And my brother in law: "hmm, no way that it could be him." And I said: "yes, you are right. I mean, Viggo is from America, not Denmark". And so we left, without me checking, if it was him. Remember, I was standing behind the 2 meters door. The next day, I studied the newspaper. And guess what? It WAS THE Viggo Mortensen. Isn´t that a tragic story? 🙈😭😄😄😄

I’m not used to hearing Viggo raise his voice or sound animated outside of movies. In all the interviews and commentary he did for LOTR movies and video games, he sounded so mellow and has a deep, gravelly voice. But here on Stephen Colbert’s show, it’s like he’s a whole different person.

Do you all remember how Sean Penn beat Madonna in the 90's and held her captaive for days. So when she finally escaped, she was so badly beaten that the cops she was seeking help with, did not believe she was Madonna, coz they couldn't recognize her. That's just something I always think about when people say that Sean Penn ain't that bad. He's exactly that bad.

Yes and no. Someone has to be the first person to speak up about other's bad behavior, and VM is the kind of person who is easy to believe (even if you kind of don't want to think a particular allegation is true). So, again, I'm glad he corrected the record. His experiences with Sean Penn don't, however, over-write the experiences of others.

There were a couple of stories about him in LOTR that I always wondered about. One said he kicked a helmet really hard and broke his toe or something. Another was, during a fight against an Orc, the guy accidentally threw a real dagger, and Viggo knocked it aside with his sword.

They're both true. The helmet he kicks is when they find Merry and Pippins belts in the pyre in Rohan. He just followed through, screamed and fell to his knees and Peter Jackson said "let's keep it" the knife thing is around the time he goes to Boromir to try to save him but is too late He also speaks Swedish to Arwen in hte glade with Bilbo's trolls and Norwegian to the horse Brego in Rohan when calming him

Different value scales. Colbert: If you slept outside in the woods a part of a night you have slept outside in the woods. Mortensen: If you don't slept outside in the woods *every* night during the whole movie you have not really slept outside in the woods.
