In this video we check out the Vigilant Trails Venturer 215 Compact Survival Kit. This kits runs right at $40 on the VT website as of September 2021. This is the 2nd VT kit I've reviewed and, once again, I'm impressed with the build quality. Enjoy!

One quick note: The reason the kit does NOT come with water purification tablets or a mini flashlight (torch) is because the kit is purposefully designed by Vigilant Trails to be "non-expiring" and, as a result, this kit (in its default configuration) can be stored for extended periods of time with confidence that it will perform as needed when called upon. Also, if you saw that this video got uploaded twice, that's because I had to delete the original and re-upload it in order to correct a small mistake that was bugging me.

Doug Ritter did the same with his Pocket Survival Kit. It also didn't have matches for shipping laws, but rather had a Spark-lite.

The very large hook could be used as a gaff. Lashed onto o pole to help land larger fish. Could also help harvest fruit and nuts from trees.

Very good kit. The sack it comes in is high visibility and can hold the contents of the kit in case you need the tin for food prep or water boiling.

That little box contained a surprising amount of stuff. Could you have added one of those flat, keychain, LED flashlights into the box? Also, you didn't make use of the storage bag for a few larger additions. At the very least, you should add a carabiner so that the bag could be hung on your belt.

Storage bag would be good for collecting berries or keep stuff at one place when boiling water in original can

A squirrel or a rabbit??!! You'd catch a bear in that thing! And the giant hook??? Maybe to make some sort of gaff?? I like how they use the outside of the tin for storage too. You'd get some bits and bobs in the bag too!

An excellent example of a few trail tenets: 1. (Les Stroud method) carry additional items in your pockets: water bottle, headlamp, energy bars, Bic lighter, Sawyer 2. my method: 2 items on my belt: Leatherman Wave, Buck 105 folder 3. 4mm contractors bag folded & pressed tightly in your back pocket, additional hank of 36 bank line 4. Light jacket & cap 5. this video demonstrates the superiority of ordering a larger box from Amazon (the Altoids tins are just too small) The above 5 suggestions do not require a pack not hinder the casual hiker with bulky encumbrances GREAT video, Eric. Glad you added the H2O treatment 🏕

I would probably double up on the survival blankets and stash extra sticky tape, a lighter, 550 cord, cable ties and a swiss army knife in the bag. Pretty much anything extra I think might be useful that will fit inside the bag and around the tin.

The thing to remember about hooks is that the larger the hook the better because you can catch large fish and tiny fish with a large hook but with a tiny hook you can only catch tiny fish. Personally I always put 10 inch long hooks in my survival kits
@ethanh2392

You actually have that backwards. It’s better to have small hooks because you can catch large fish with a small hook but not a small fish with a large hook

You could wrap the tin in electrical tape and make it waterproof. It would only add a small amount of weight and you can use it for different things. Sealing things up, building a fire and probably a few others too.

At 8:55 I was like "oh, a menstrual pad." That, combined with Celox powder, is what I like to call the "Poor Man's Israeli Bandage" . I keep at least one super absorbent, huge-ass pad in my med kits because they work. Get the ultimate absorbency, and get the largest you can find. I'm talking XXL. They are FANTASTIC at treating axe wounds (no joke intended lol) Ask me how I know!

Good stuff Eric. This kit looks well thought out and of high quality. Like the concept of the outer bag, the straps and the way the survival blanket is stored. As always I would like to have seen a flashlight included as standard. That hook was impressive! It would be nice to see some type of arrow-head type option as included in some ESEE kits as this has a lot of useful functions but would not have to be as high spec. Just an idea.

I like some of their innovation. The fishing device is a copy of a Speed-hook but looks more compact and set up a bit differently. I like the snare but you typically want to sent out at least 10. I'd rather a full size firesteel than that mag block as I've never found the mag to be that good. I am tempted to order but with Canadian shipping I'd have to put a $100+ order in to make it worth the shipping cost, then the exchange rates. Good news Americans. they seem to have free economy shipping.

Overall not too bad. The fire seems pretty lacking though. The space blanket included is pretty much trash- I got a ten pack of 'em from Amazon and they're as flimsy as tissue paper. Lastly the card with mushroom ID is useless to the point of danger! You simply can't rely on a drawing of a 'shroom (or even a photo for that matter) to identify them, you need experience under an expert. There's little food value in a mushroom and some are so deadly that one bite can kill. It's not worth the risk and should be avoided. Beyond that not a bad small kit.

Right. Truth be told, it's actually better to travel with more than one compass. A compass can be effected by nearby metals etc, so having a 2nd compass on hand allows for a more accurate consensus on true direction.
