In this episode I make a reconstruction of the Viking hosen found in Hedeby. It is a fragment of brown wool that by most common interpretation is believed to be a part of one of the hosen in a pair. The top part to be precise. There is plenty of contemporary finds of hosen to make the interpretation valid. The missing thing is the braies to wear under. I don't know of any findings - only depictions from medieval time period in general - so the braies you see me wear in the end of the video is only a speculative piece of clothing. The hose is a simple yet very comfortable piece of leg wear that doesn't take a lot of fabric making it fairly inexpensive and practical. For me wool pants get very warm in summer and having linen braies the crutch is not too warm and the legs themselves are ok with the wool. Also hiking the mountains I want a fairly thick wool covering my leg to protect me from thorny bushed and brambles. I look forward testing the hosen out in winter.
This video is part of my Asturian series where I craft a basic viking kit as I go to build my self a nice set for hiking, crafting and bushcrafting when in the mountains in Northern Spain.
Note: I have not researched the stitching technique of the original fragments. The stitching I use in this video is just some basics I know well and my go to way of making garments with strong and easy seams.

I've never seen hose cut on the straight grain, but I assume that the seam by the knee might have added back in some of the ease of movement and bending that would be lost without the natural stretch

I havent thought of this. And sadly im no too experienced in understanding the grain and weaving of the fabrics. so you might have a very good point. after some months of use i must say that these hose has good movement and stretch. all the best:)

What incredible scenery! Truly it must feel wonderful to be out breathing the fresh mountain air, looking out over that view, and just crafting at your own pace. Just marvelous. The hose turned out really well, I think you did an excellent job with them! Thank you again for sharing my friend, all the best on your travels! 😁

Great job. I admire that you did your own pattern. When I sewed my Hedeby trousers (slightly different version of the Thorsberg trousers), I preferred to have the cut drawn by a seamstress. The fact that you are not using precisely preserved stitches will be recognized by only a few people anyway. I don't follow that on my costume either. I follow generally known sewing methods from the given period and place. I wonder what period your costume represents? According to the choice of the design of the hosen, I am guessing the second half of the 10th century?

Hello Foxy. thank you for the comment and the appreciation of the video. I have not narrowed it down to a super specific time period but tend to just generally make as many things as I can and need from the settlement of Haithabu. So yes second half of 10th century it not too far off. Im not super strict about it though but at least with new items i craft for my kit i try to orientate it towards southern Denmark and Hedeby. If the item I need is not found there I branch out the research. All the best and thanks for taking the time to comment

I tried to sew my own pair of hosen (14th century, but the design is pretty much identical to yours), mine however drag quite a lot on my braies and they constantly want to slide down, do you have a similar problem? Is that normal? How tight are your hosen? Maybe mine are too loose and I need to sew them tighter I dunno.
@RAMUNI-Viking
@RAMUNI-Viking 8 ай бұрын
Hello there Woofie:) i think i know what you mean. Mine Are very tight but anyway there Will always be some gravity pulling. The hosen very tight, the belt loops of the braies strong and the belt that holds the braies in place strapped as tight as it can still be comfortable. This works for me. Good luck with yours and its awesome that you made your own.

Not to be nitpicky here, but, could you possibly pay more attention when it comes to the actual sewing part in future videos, cause I am an absolute noob when it comes to any kind of sewing and it took me a whole lot of rewinding to even start comprehending what was going on. Im still not quite sure what you did and why 😅 Also, the beautiful landscape aint helping much when it comes to focusing on understanding your work process 😆

Hello dan. Thank you very much for the feedback. I Will definately note this down and I can see that as Newbie there is things I might be taken for granted here that could have been explained more in depth. I plan on making a small hat from the off cuts so soon there Will be a chance to explain more. All the Best

@@dan_the_dj i learned so much from KZfaq and still do so im happy to give a little back. I Will make a video about the breeches at some point. For my first ones i bought cheap second hand linen Viking pants on facebook and cut off the legs so they became shorts. It worked.
