Warren White Yes Ivar used both army's against each other. He is freaking brilliant! Ivar could have won this battle, but he held his men back so King Herald's and Lagartha's army could be weakened. Ivar is so cunning and he thinks ahead of everyone else. He is too intelligent and ahead of his time. I believe he lost this battle on purpose. He used both army's against each other. Just brilliant!

Now, despite having lost, Ivar has accomplished weakening two adversaries, knowing where certain people’s loyalties lie, and learning battle tactics of Lagertha and Bjorn. Does that really sound like a loss?

When Lagertha asked the seer about her fate in season 3, he replied with "I see a harvest celebrated in blood, I see a trickster whose weapon cleaves you, I see a city made of marble and a burning broiling ocean." I'm not sure whether Ivar planned for Bishop Heahmund to be captured or its just fated by the gods for him to survive the battle but I have a strong feeling that Heahmund is the trickster. This season has made an effort to show that Bishop Heahmund's weapon, his sword, is special and holds some kind of "magic". His sword already has Lagertha's interest and it will be that sword that kills her. But Heahmund wont be the one doing the cleaving- one of Ragnar's sons will, as the seer also said in Season 4. And lets not forget about when the seer said to Lagertha, in Season 5, that she would see Bjorn again "but in terrible circumstances". The season is coming to a close so I expect something terrible to happen to team Lagertha. Or maybe I'm completely wrong and misinterpreted everything haha.

You could be onto something, but on the other hand, Ivar is a treacherous ally for King Harold, and he is also the main force who is dividing the sons of Ragnar.
