Smarter? Not really. Nobody can be as smart as ragnar in a way. Although battle wise Ivar is either just as good or better, but there's more to being smart than just being able to fight.

Ivar took the show far much better than Ragnar. I understand how people love Ragnar but Ivar was more ruthless than Ragnar. In the battlefield he was very brilliant and new how to outsmart the enemies. He's my best character in this serie

He’s had some of the best development in the entire show. The Iceland storyline may not have been great, but I still love Floki and him discovering the cross was truly emotional. Love the fact that they didn’t have him go back to his old ways because that’s when it would’ve been a pointless storyline.

Oh, that's the issue here? What about the leather biker gear vikings are wearing? How nobody fights in a god damn formation and people don't seem to value helmets overall? There's plenty of stuff in Vikings that is historically inaccurate as hell. That being said, they tell the stories of the most important points in the viking age with interesting characters that develop properly (which would be impossible if sticking to the correct timeframe, as characters would have to be 200+ years old ^^)

they fight without helmets most of the time so the viewers can see the faces, to feel connected with the characters. Sure they take many liberties with everything, but no one will watch if they don't feel something for the main characters.

That is a valid point as to why main characters don't wear helmets. But what about mail? What about everyone else fighting without helmets etc.. I just think it's a shame that a show this good fell for the typical tropes you see in shows and movies depicting vikings.
