Rebirth of a forgotten Temple Complex - Bateshwar, Morena (Hindi)

Bateshwar complex, spread in 10 hectares of land in ravines of Chambal near Morena District of Madhya Pradesh comprises of nearly 200 Hindu Temples. The shrines of Bateshwar temple-complex are dedicated mostly to Shiva and a few to Vishnu. The temples are made of sandstone and belong to the 8-10th century CE. They were built during the reign of Gurjara-Pratihara Dynasty, 300 years before Khajuraho temples were built.
This complex was long forgotten and badly damaged with time. Shri K.K. Muhammed, then superintendent, Bhopal circle of Archaeological Survey of India took the responsibility of restoring it to its original glory in 2005. He had to take help of dacoits of Chambal to restore these temples and later faced heat of mining mafia. This video takes you through his journey of restoring the complex and the challenges he faced.

Oblige hone kee koi zaroorat nahin hai bhaai. Whatever he did, he was paid for that from tax payers money. Yes we must appreciate his honesty & dedication which is lacking in most of sarkaaree babus. Congratulations Sir, on 21st March, 2017 I took my students to Bateshwar of UP and after that was willing to take them to Bateshwar/Batukeshwar of Morena, however due to technical issues of transportation could not make it happen. सर में 15 2017 जुने को बातेश्वर गया था इन मंदिरों के समूह को देख कर कितना गर्व कि अनुभिति हुइ में में शब्दों में नहि बता सकता . इंतने भव्य मंदिर एक साथ मेने पहले कभी नही देखे. वहा आपके समय में नियुक्त चौकीदार जयवीर से अपके बारे में सुना उसने बताया कैसे आपने दिन रात एक करके मंदिरों को पुराने स्वरूप में लाने का कम किया. यहा सुनकर मेरा सिर अनायास ही अपके सम्मान में झुक गया . हम सभी को आप पर गर्व है कि आप जैसे महान पुरातत्व वेत्ता हमेरे देश में पैदा हुए. मुझे वाहन पर जयवीर ने फोटो अल्बम भि दिखाया के कैसे आपने मंदिरों का संरक्षण कार्य और आज भी आप वर्ष में एक बार जरूर बातेश्वर आते है. सर में कभी आपसे मिला तो नही बस TV पर ही आपको देखा है. मेरे हर्दिक इच्छा है कि आप से व्यक्तिगत् मिल के आप को धन्यवाद दून कि आपने इतनी अनमोल धरोवर को खोज कर देश का गौरव बढ़ाया. जयवीर अक‍सर आपकी बहुत तारीफ करता है और आपको हमेशा याद करता है वो यह भी बताता के यदि आप कुछ समय और यहाँ राह जाते तो जो रुका हुआ कम है उसे भी पूरा कड़वा देते. पुनः आपको नमन आपका विजय

Bateshwar group of temples and the story of its restoration and conservation are a source of inspiration for scholars like us working in the area of art, heritage and culture. Very often we lament the loss of cultural treasures which lay scattered throughout our country. You have a shown a path to all, especially the students and younger generation as to how the cultural heritage of our country can be restored and preserved. I was here in Bateshwar in January 2017. An amazingly restored Temple complex. I got to know that Shri KK Mohamed is no longer overseeing the reconstruction. Perhaps the mining mafia has had its way and got him out. I hope and pray that the restoration work continues and it is fully restored to its former glory.

Hats off to Shri K K Muhammad, Man on Mission of Archaeological Survey of India (now retired), doing fabulous job by restoring Bateshwar temple complex in Morena District (Madhya Pradesh). This complex is more than 300 years old than famous temples at Khajuraho. Pray to God and ask to send some more bright sons/daughters like him to restore our depleted, decaying archaeological sites. Mr Mohammed Sir you have done a miracle here, please don't let anyone stop you doing what you do best. God has blessed you to do this work because who knows how many people have passed by over the years looking at the ruins of these temples.

+Nazish Khan I have carried out enough conservation work on Mitawali and Padavali temples. Now they are in good condition.Mitawali reminds you of the architecture of the Sansad Bhawan. Padawali can be marketed as mini Khajurao.

Archaeological Survey of India is involved in malpractices. It manufactures pillars and fixes in temples. Removes pillars from temples and fixes them in mosques. It also manufactures fake idols and fools the Hindus of being ancient.

This is an amazing story of how the commitment and determination of Sh. K K Mohammad and his team from ASI were successful in restoring the lost glory of Bateshwar temples. It has fascinating elements which reinforces our faith in our heritage and institutions. Secularism, protection of the environment and heritage and even supreme sacrifice of individuals have gone into making possible the rebirth of this temple complex. This story needs to be shared with not only Indians but also the outside world so that Bateshwar temple complex becomes a symbol of India's true spirit. Up, Bihar MP ,Rajasthan, and many south Indian States have a number of such monuments.Who would save these rich heritage and then market it,so that it can be turned it in to an economic asset which can generate crores of rupees is the question.We need visionary statesman as our rulers and able officials to implement it.

We have many other aspects of our conservation work to show case before the public like our Bateshwar documentary.The extra ordinary work done by the ASI at Nalanda Vaishali, Kesariya and other places should be turned in to documentaries like this so that even an ordinary person can also understand how rich was our heritage and how immensely the ASI has contributed for its conservation and protection
