This song was 'discovered' by accident by John Peel. It was on a B side of a Jamaican import of 'Calico suit' by The Mighty Two and he played the wrong side on air by accident. He played it again several times and it got released and the rest is history.

@@matthewadams1874 You're absolutely right. The music is a DJ dub track called 'Three piece suit' by Trinity which is based on 'I'm still in love' by Alton Ellis. The same music has been used on a few songs over the years.

I bought this single, Uptown Ranking, when I was 16, which I played and played till it was trashed, I saved it for years, and saw how tattered it was that I threw it out... my English was Dutch influenced, that I totally related to this song, thank God, I thought back then, a song that refelected my limited English back in NZ, I live in Holland now, and so, Dutch is sometimes Double-Dutch to me...it’s awesome

I was born 14 years after this song was released but it resonates with me. I remember watching my father playing with us (his kids) while blasting this song on his turntable in the mid nineties. My goodness. I love this song so much and i just want to cry.

Rolling Stones, Queen, Eruption, Rod Stewart, The Wings, Hot Chocolate etc. auf einer grünen Kassette, die meine Cousine 1976 aufgenommen und mir damals 9-Jährige geschenkt hatte 🎶❤ Ich besitze die Kassette bis heute und sie funktioniert auch noch, aber ich wusste nie Titel/Künstler dieses Songs, bis es sich heute ergab, dass ich danach suchte.
