I don't understand people who come in and remove the original wallpapers and original paint colors, paint everything WHITE, then call it a "restoration". Restoration is to make something look like it would have when it was first built...If the house had dark brown paint and wallpaper on the ceilings, that's what the original owners intended it to look like. I have to say that my modern aesthetic definitely prefers the new version, just don't call it a "restoration".

If they did it the way it's done in Australia, you'd scour as many sources - previous owners, local government, papers, etc to get as much information as possible. But there may be little available, except family photos. They have no trouble funding the "renovations". I noticed they are donors to a Chicago architectural group, so they aren't unfamiliar with what's needed.
