From the master of suspense, John Carpenter, comes a chilling new version of the sci-fi classic. Something is terribly wrong in the tiny village of Midwich. After an unseen force invades a quiet coastal town, ten women mysteriously find themselves pregnant. Local physician Dr. Alan Chaffee (Christopher Reeve) and government scientist Dr. Susan Verner (Kirstie Alley) join forces when the women simultaneously give birth... and the reign of supernatural terror begins. In what The New York Times calls "one scarifying trip," the people of Midwich must try to find a way to stop the unstoppable in the Village of the Damned.

I don't get why this version gets so much hate. I actually saw this version first, not knowing it was a remake, and I loved it. Knowing it was Christopher Reeve's last film before his unfortunate accident that left him paralyzed, it makes it a bit more special. Not to mention Mark Hamill stars in this version as well. I remember getting so excited seeing "Luke Skywalker" in this movie. I don't care what haters say. This version is great.

I finally watched it last year, it’s honestly pretty good imo. I was genuinely disturbed by those creepy little children, and finding out what the kids looked like beyond their human form is quite freaky. Another underrated movie by John Carpenter right next to “Memoirs of an Invisible Man.”

I think remakes often get criticized simply because it's a copy of an original idea. And that is almost always inferior for no other reason than it started off on the premise that comes from a lack of imagination. The original is low budget, which adds to the "creepiness" of the story. Being in black and white also added to the stark, cold atmosphere. AND, the lead child's voice was actually the voice of an adult woman, which gave a maturity to the character whereas here, it's just precocious kids. Not scary.

Talking about inclusion... those Children weren't that bright if they thought acting creepy and killing people was a good way to "blend in" I guess they act like children after all. it's kind of sad if you see things from a certain point of view, they was just scared and wanted to defend themselves the best they thought. Except for the little boy, that kid did knew how to blend in, even at the cost of sacrificing all his brothers.

@Bro-cx2jc
@Bro-cx2jc 5 жыл бұрын
I think the kids from the original were actually a lot less creepy. They seemed to have a bit of personality, because they spoke politely to the adults rather than spurning them. Mara refuses to hold her father's hand and speaks boldly to him about how changes will be made. In the movie however, the leader David does not act cocky and brash to his parents like this, and remember the scene in which he and the other kids talk to Mrs. Plumton and Mrs. Ogle at the shop? They're rather nice if you stay on their good side.
@hotaru8309
@hotaru8309 3 жыл бұрын
@@Bro-cx2jc Valid points. I would say the original children were much more creepy and mysterious. You got the ominous feeling and unease where this version was more straight threatening and malevolent than those previous children. It's a different sensation. I agree about their good side and the relationship effects of the original. I feel "Children of the Damned" worked on that the most and dug into that idea and sense of almost insect like threat detection and decision making.

@michaelschramm1064 3 жыл бұрын
@@hotaru8309 The original film was more faithful to John Wyndham’s novel. But after all, for modern audiences, there is the need to “hit them over the head” with malevolence. Back in the day, it was all about “less is more”.

This actually is a remake. The original was made in 1960, and a spin-off was made in 1964 called Children of the Damned. I've seen all three, and although Children of the Damned was okay, it was the least of the three. I like this one best, and the 1960 version is great, but doesn't quite match. The kids in the 1960 version are nicer, too. They speak politely to adults in some cases and actually greet them. And in one or two instances, I remember how the kids were hurt by someone but actually chose to leave them alone rather than return the damage.
