Great video, though I will disagree on one point; an antagonist doesn't have to be a conscious being. Time can be an antagonist. So can an extinction level asteroid. It depends on the story. The antagonist is whatever main force that is pushing against the protagonist.

Talking about heroes and villains, I was thinking about Breaking Bad and Walter White and how even though he's the protagonist of the story, he's actually a villain. And some of the antagonists of the show are actually heroes. Just think its interesting. And I would say the the Punisher is a good example of a pure anti hero.

I usually use a 2 x 2 matrix with hero, villain, anti-hero, anti-villain. Dr Yueh from Dune would be an anti-villain, i.e. does the wrong thing but for understandable reasons.

I have fulfilled the prophecy. Rage of Dragons(and the second book) were some of my best reads in ‘21. Antihero or no, Tau is one of the most badass protagonists. His strength comes from his unrelenting force of will to push through literal nightmares.

I think I would take my year in solitary confinement with Spongbob. I believe he would make time move quicker by keeping us occupied with stuff to do. The power of imagination can go a long way. P.S. I followed along with the villain to hero scale perfectly. Maybe our brains work the same way.

Villains in tv shows / movie series are always challenging because as soon as they become a fan favourite, their character gets rewritten to become more anti hero until eventually they are a hero. You can have a more purist concept of villain in books because they are less subject to being changed by fan input / views I think. Also the POV is important, too. Karate Kid series - Daniel Larusso is the hero and Johnny is the villain. Cobra Kai, the series is from Johnny's perspective. He is no longer a villain or an antagonist. Not sure what he is other than protagonist though .. possibly elements of anti-Hero :) If you haven't watched Cobra Kai - you would love it as it is not what one might think it is :D You would also have a fascinating insight into the Joel Edgerrton film The Gift - very big focus on villain / antagonist ... when does someone's actions push them into villain territory

Great stuff guys! I have to disagree with you on the point of the Shrike (Hyperion Cantos) being a villain, or even evil for that matter. Based on the video I’m guessing you haven’t read the whole series yet, but after finishing the Cantos (especially the Endymion books) I would make the argument of the Shrike being just a means to an end, a simple tool. I don’t want to go into too much detail, so I don’t accidentaly spoil anything, but I highly recommend reading all four books. It will put everything in a new light. Plus… they are all awesome! :) Also, you are right on the money with the Hyperion Cantos having a villain just as you described. Pure evil. It/she(?) shows up about half way through Endymion and is much worse than the Shrike! :D P.S. How can you not know Tom and Jerry?!! Also… shoot ET in the face! :))
