Former NBA star Vince Carter sits down with Taylor Rooks for exclusive interview to discuss being voted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, how he feels about "ring culture" in basketball, the lack of quality veterans on NBA rosters, and how he tried to help Carmelo Anthony early in his career. He also explains why Kobe deserves to be in the GOAT conversation, why he thinks he would beat MJ in a dunk contest, the crazy dunk contest idea featuring LeBron and T-Mac that never happened, responds to critics who questioned his work ethic, recalls how Kobe helped prepare him for retirement and opens up about his relationship with the Raptors.

I don’t question his work ethic. I think in his prime years, his motor just got questioned in those waining years in Toronto. He’d come back to a chorus of boos and drop 50 + a game winner after leaving averaging 16. Nonetheless, he’s the greatest dunker of all time, an elite scorer and you can’t tell the story of basketball without mentioning Vince Carter. And he changed basketball in Canada forever. And he was clutch.

@@safeman5383 yeah time heals all and whatnot. I’m just saying that’s where his motor first got questioned because he went to Jersey and started dropping 20+ again and always played his best ball against the city that hated him. I think it tarnished his reputation a bit until he became a journeyman and sort of created a new identity. But through all that he was still clutch, an Allstar and undeniable talent. He’s arguably Top 75 worthy. Definitely Top 100.

So many variables the season he was traded: new coaching philosophy under Sam Mitchell, rebuild and play centered around Bosh and araujo, played 95% at SG than his usual SF position, then played with Jason Kidd and relied on the go to player again. Fun fact: Despite reduced points, Carter’s block, steal, and turnover percentage were better that season as a Raptor before he was traded than as a Net, and were among the best numbers in his career.

Coming from Sanford, Fl having played at Lake Mary high school I missed playing against Vince when he played against what would be my hs a couple years later (I was in eighth grade). Those back home in central FL in particular Daytona Beach knew (intuition) that that skinny guy who was the drum major in mainland high school’s band. He would go on to do great things with that round ball. 🫡 to you Vince Carter!! Thank you and thanks to your father for contributing to those midnight basketball runs around central FL. Definitely deserving of being a Hall of Famer. I honestly think being in the Hall is much better than winning a ring, because there was a lot of people who won a ring and ended up being unrecognized by so many people. If a person in the Hall many people will see their name and remember him or her as a legend. Not just in the NBA, basketball in general.

Gilbert comes across as a hater for clickbait but he isn't fully 100% wrong. VC is the reason i got into basketball and my favorite all time player. But in his prime, after maybe Year 3, and injuries played a part, I wouldn't say he had a crazy offseason work ethic (same with JVG saying TMac was a bad practice player). Grant Hill flat out said this guy was eating chocolate chip cookies on the plane. JKidd definitely helped him when he first got traded to NJ cuz he didn't want to look lazy next to that guy. And I would say in his Dallas years he started taking training, stretching, offseason stuff much more seriously.

He had an ok work ethic but not a killer instinct like Kobe. He wanted to be friends with everyone, not destroy them. As he got older, he had to get a better work ethic out of necessity because he could not rely on his natural talent as much. I also think he was more interested in longevity than in trying too hard one season and burning out. I think he learned the hard way about pushing yourself too hard when he got injured on the Raptors.

People have to understand that Kobe and his work ethic only existed because Kobe knew that he sucked in comparison to the other guys in the early 2000s. Its not a knock on Kobe. Kobes mindset elevated him into who he was. The other players were already dogs and truly had more talent than Kobe. These players werent lazy, they were just on amother level skill wise. Kobe was playing catch up to these dudes. Kids wanted to be more like Iverson, VC, KG, TMac, etc because those were the dogs of the league that were carrying their teams and the NBA. Kobe had no choice but to be obsessed with working hard because all of those players were busting the Lakers ass and had the staples center buzzing everytime they came to town. The God given talent that existed in the early 2000s was off the chain. Kobe came into the league thinking shit was sweet since he had flare and the league was pushing the Jordan narrative. He found out quick that there were plenty of other players that could easily put 50 on his head.
