Always an entertaining and interesting speaker, this is a refreshing assessment of modernism and its progeny from the vantage point of one of the greatest living representational painters. I take it as an encouraging pathway by which to re-embrace Modernism, critically, without loosing the craft and objectivity of representational painting.

Many artists have been motivated by the need to be relevant. It is either subconscious or conscious. They may rocket to success without ever knowing why.

@37:09; He really means Turner, who had himself strapped to the mast of a ship in tempest, In order to paint it.

I really appreciate this and learned a lot. When you say that we are always painting ourselves, do you see a difference in stating that compared to always painting our point of view? Also, how can we fek up the reflection when we can't escape that point of view? How could i paint the reflection of the moon without it reflecting to me even if I tried? Thanks. This was brilliant!

Actually, he had been felled by a rare nasal pharyngeal cancer that had left him bedridden for months, supine, sapped, weak from the various chemo- and radiotherapies, so its a medicinal chew for his throat

U r certainly right about the cancer ....Im always surprised by other responses, where do they come up with this stuff? Nicotine or pompus attitude? Ha! Lol

Vincent, Those "smart guy" paintings are things that I'm glad you grew out of. The emperor of abstract expressionism has always been without clothes. Any respect you had for that pretentious nonsense was as a result of brainwashing. You make great paintings because you know that beauty and craftsmanship are two essential ingredients that cannot be denied from visual art that is worth its salt.

Abstract expressionism is the peak of modernism, not postmodernity. Desiderio has stated many times his admiration for Rothko, Dekooning and that period in history while dismissing post modernity due to the cynicism and all the negatives that came with it.

It’s hurtful to name people and then speak derogatorily about them. Just say that there was a painter at the Academy who was a terrible painter, Blah, blah blah.
