Vinegar Eels! One of The Easiest Live Fish Foods. How to Start, Maintain & Feed From A Culture. Vinegar Eels are perfect for feeding to all nano fish, nano fry, rainbow fish fry, danio fry, guppies, bettas, and any small or young, newly spawned and hatched fish. The vinegar actually can help black water tanks and help lower your ph at the same time. These worms are great for finicky or picky fish, transitioning from live to frozen food and bulking up your fry or nano fish to get them maturing faster, living longer and getting them primed for spawning and mating!
Have you tried to hatch live baby brine shrimp, daphnia, micro worms, grindal worms, black worms, fruit flies and other live cultures for your pet fish? Well This video will hopefully show you how easy and inexpensive, dare i say cheap- it is to start a vinegar culture. You can buy a culture for $3 or $4 USD online buy some applecided vinegar, an apple, a used soda bottle and boom, you're ready to create or propagate a vinegar eel culture. These cultures don't smell and stink, require almost no attention and will last over 6 months without needing additional food or upkeep.
how do i start a vinegar eel culture? often times they simply appear in vinegar left out, or made with unpurified water, but simply getting an ounce or two of live culture aka thousands of nematodes or tiny worms is the easiest method and ensures no contamination or mold.

@Fishtory

filter floss stops mold spores/fungi/flies and the lil guys do form spontaneously in many regions, but usually that requires leaving it uncapped... the starters are like 3 dollars on ebay though

Could one use old, vinegared, kombucha? and, might you be up for sharing a culture in Seattle? I'd be happy to come to you (I'm in West Seattle, and with the bridge out, we're nearly an island) or meet up somewhere. I was starting a new tank, shook out mossy wood from my lime green rasbora nano tank to start the new tank; turns out there were eggs on that moss and now I have surprise fry... (and if you want a kombucha scoby, omg do I have plenty of those. ;}
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 3 жыл бұрын
Haha I'm not sure about the kombucha...the alcohol may kill them, I would guess? But yes, if you want some starter of locally cultured vinegar eels, I can share a bottle. I also sell 20 oz bottles that are 4 months or older and "full" of them for like 10 bucks ...only an ounce or less of those will start a whole new culture within 2 to 4 months also Email me if you'd like to do so. Can you do this without a culture or are there any other live foods that don’t need one? (I’m a kid and don’t have the funds to buy/ go somewhere to get one)
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 2 жыл бұрын
If you have unpasteurized vinegar then in most of the USA Japan and Europe, If you leave vinegar out a few weeks. The nematodes will find their way to it... however finding unpasteurized vinegar is a little unusual these days. Sometimes on aquatic.com or getgills.com you can get starter kits for as little as 5 to 10 dollars also. I'd suggest that you look up paramecium culture or infusoria...it's nearly free to make and you usually don't need a starter culture. Good luck!

@Fishtory
@Fishtory 3 жыл бұрын
So if you have unfiltered vinegar...and are in europe, Central Asia, North America, Chna, Korea or Japan- they should be living In the region and I believe perhaps they live in fresh fruit and grapes, apples, olives etc...and as long as your vinegar is not boiled or filtered they usually just appear (like yeast does to create sour dough bread). If you can't make or find unfiltered vinegar, then i think you need to buy a starter culture on ebay or some such site. Good luck!

in theory, yes... a batch of wine or vinegar being made will spontaneously grow them if it is contaminated by air about one out if 5 times (so I hear)... but it's far easier to spend 5 or 10 dollars and buy a starter on Ebay or aquabid... if you need tiny food though...like micro you can boil lettuce, kale or brocolli and then let it sit in a jar of fishtank water for a week or two...itll be full of algea and protist

Would mother of vinegar work better than apples
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 2 жыл бұрын
I don't believe so, because the nematode "eels" break down sugars and or alcohols if I recall. So you need something to fuel the culture, sort of like brewing beer or wine. I may be incorrect on that, since it's been a couple years since I was reading up on all this. But I think what I just mentioned, is how it works

In many parts of the world you just do this same method but leave things uncovered for a month or two, until something blows in cysts (eggs) of vinegar eels OR sometimes apple cider vinegar that is not pasteurized or filtered, will also contain a small amount and over time they'll come back to life. It's why it's hard to find non-pasturized vinegars now

How do I make a culture without buying a culture?
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 4 жыл бұрын
Keep a really algae filled and nasty dirty tank without fish, but with plants and shrimp....eventually little microorganisms grow, especially in sunlight or window ledge. However this is only for very young and or tiny cultures. For scuds, water fleas, black worms etc. You need to introduce them form an existing colony. As for grabbing some stream or lake water and culturing them- there are a ton of variables and it totally depends on your source.it can be risky fue to parasites and worms existing in the wild...all that said- many people do use that method
