Man, this mod was incredible back then. Most Source stuff fails to scare me, but the atmosphere and the different events that could trigger in the house during exploration were seriously well done and genuinely unnerving... Such a shame that the developer abandoned it. I remember following the updates, although they were really slow, back when he was still adding stuff to the house and watching the videos people would make of them exploring and finding new stuff. Would've loved to see a fully-fleshed out, standalone game for just the house portion... There really isn't a scary game quite like this where you are just free to interact and discover things on your own in a small house with gradual progression, unraveling the mystery, and triggering random events. It's really cool and a nice change of pace from other scary games where you're constantly changing locations. Oh well... Hopefully next time Joel plays he can make some good progress and trigger some of the super scary stuff with the closet, attic, etc..

This is a blast from the past. I remember watching someone play this years ago. All I remember was how it jumps from the spooky house segment to SHUUT and back to spooky house.

Shame he didn't make it to the real meat and bones of the House segment, with the Sewers. That's when it's really good.

I had the chance to talk with the creator back in the days he was still building chapter 1. He was very proud of his mod (in a good way) and he really seem to care a lot for it, like it was his favorite son or something. I'm also just as impressed as you guys that he ended up abandoning it.

I remember watching a small lets-play channel go through this game when it came out while I was in middle school, and maybe 2-3 years ago I got my best friend to try this out when I was at his house. I was playing his PS4 on the TV and he was directly left of me on his computer playing Underhell going through some of the house tasks. He gave me the headphones cause he's not great with horror (to be fair, neither am I) and he had already had some cupboards open on him and shit so I was listening to the game audio for him. He was in the attic when I think I heard a violin sting or something; so I told him, and next thing I know he JUMPS from his computer, sending his chair crashing into me and nearly runs out of the bedroom. I looked over at the computer screen just in time to see the dead wife ghost bitch's head disappear back down the trap door into the closet below. She was watching him as he fucked around in the attic. He still has this game on his PC but REFUSES to play it ever again.

Holy shit!!! I remember watching a youtube video on this back in like 2012-2013! Just last week I thought about that weird game about a swat guy living in a haunted house. Then Joel posts this. For years I thought it was a dream and the game wasn't real, it was driving me crazy.

It's crazy the best horror experience I've ever had was a small segment of a mod.

Back in the day I played through the entire mod in a single 12-hour session and that really fucks with you Still think about the things this game did really right sometimes, it's such a varied collection of influences- I mean it's pretty much a Silent Hill fan game with elements of Fear, Resident Evil, and even a little Metal Gear As I remember things get suuuper anime by the end, where you're fighting zombies, Nemesis not-pyramid-head, and pseudo wesker psycho mantis in Super Jail (Featuring Delirium™) Also being chased by ghosts, Vent Grandpa and the only well-earned "It was all a dream" section I've played Mr Beef Jerky is the game's kinda heavy handed "Really makes you think" representation of the MC's guilt, and only appears in dream sequences ...EXCEPT a SINGLE instance where he shows up in the "real world" without ANY warning after a plot reveal near the end and it made my skeleton pop out You return to the house in flashback between chapters, and I always remembered it getting creepier as the game went on, but I'm not sure since I always noped out Also when you get to super jail there's a dead guy in the showers (I THINK ported from silent hill downpour) where you can see his junk, so that's... something for a source mod FULLY MODELLED Shame about no chapter 2 tho

The Training Stage being marked as (Not Horror) is way off the mark. I get that Joel has a short attention span; that's just part of his personality. What really gets me is when he reacts to people calling him out on blatantly ignoring things the game is telling him by getting snippy and extremely sarcastic.

This is the only game to have ever actually made me not feel safe. While most horror games are neat and all, none ever had an atmosphere that struck me as violently as this one has. Lost in Vivo may be my favorite overall but holy fuck, Underhell's house makes me tense.
