In fairness I haven't played it and for what it's worth I think it does look like a lot of fun, but nobody is invalid for feeling angry that Nintendo released this instead of a fully fledged sequel after like a damn near 20 year gap in releases.

I do think this game is to test the waters. It’s an online game so they can get data on how well it’s received and played. And if they notice it gets popular they might consider it worth investing time in a new game.

is it even possible to run a game with this many players peer-to-peer? for a game like smash dedicated servers are actually, like, bad, because it tends to have few players, sometimes just 1v1, for which dedicated servers are generally overkill and just latency-adding for no benefit, but for something like this i'm not sure it's feasible to do anything but

Most of the streamers aren't really F-zero players. It doesn't cover basic mechanics besides the changes (boosts cost health, ramming for gold orbs.) It doesn't mention the spin too well either.

Also, iirc there's been a lot of unused assets datamined indicating a lot of content to come so I imagine there'll be support for a good while.

They scared me to death when they announced it as “the original F-Zero is back” so I thought it’s just gonna be SNES version with 99 people, but then immediately revealed the energy consuming booster from the later games, as well as the spin attack, which technically makes it more like Climax. Not to mention the 99 exclusive mechanics that also make the game more fresh and suitable for the online play. It’s a goddamn competitive online F-Zero and it’s fun, it may need some maps from GP-Legend and Climax (yeah, not every SNES map is great, but they are way better than boring Maximum Velocity maps, imo), but it’s way, way better than nothing.

This was the funniest shit to not even know this was going on and just randomly queue with a bunch of people with Joel memes as their names. I figurd he was playing but while I was trying to unlock some more of the team race stuff, go figure while pulling off my early round strat when I go to the other team's starting lane so if I spin I hit more opponents than they can hit, I effectively look like I am stream sniping. There's been a couple of times where I've just had random non noname people in my games, I guess that's just the nature of having 99 people in one lobby. 1:29:40

GX’s soundtrack does what a video game soundtrack should do, which is help get you into the game, but I can’t say it’s nearly as melodic or memorable as the OG F-Zero soundtrack, for example. It’s just pure hype music and not much else. I really love the aesthetic and overall presentation of the original F-Zero, including the music, so I’m really glad they brought it all back here with a fresh coat of paint.

The GX (non-secret track) version of Big Blue and Mute City theme are way lamer compared to X. Also the Fire Field theme guitar solo is just way too gratuitous for what it is. The 'Sounds of Big Blue/Mute City' versions of the songs you unlock are what the default themes should've been imo.

@@flurpoid The soundtrack consists of 82 songs and you're complaining about the guitar solo in Fire Field. THAT's lame. For The Glory and Infinite Blue are also still good. The soundtrack succeeds to be different. It's a mix of metal, techno and trance. All really unique and memorable. I'm sorry you cannot enjoy those. Yet the covers still exist and there's still 77 more.

F-Zero X and F-Zero GX both have soundtracks that reflect the contemporary popular styles of the time or of a few years previously. For GX in 2003 this was some kind of electronic rock-techno hybrid, for X in 1998 this was '70s to '80s metal. GX's soundtrack is more elegant, which may be at odds with the inelegant nature of the entire F-Zero concept. X's soundtrack is more barbaric and aggressive, which might better synergize with it and is more in line with Joel's preferences (he literally makes the same goddamn genre[s] of music.) GX's soundtrack reminds me a bit of Metroid Prime and may have had some of the same staff on the sound team. Prime's music was usually very understated outside of bosses and goddamn Chozo ghosts. X's soundtrack reminds me very strongly of Mega Man X4 thru X6, which were also made for loud white kids. In particular, there's one track in F-Zero X (Fall Down to the Scream) and one track in Mega Man X6 (Blaze Heatnix) that are fucking obnoxious shithead spam metal made for 9-year-olds who want to go deaf before they're 30. To be fair, FDttS is Fire Field's theme. Fire Field is in F-Zero, X, and GX and always has the most over the top soundtrack in the game because it's goddamn Fire Field. I don't like FDttS at all but Feel Our Pain is one of my favorite tracks from GX. Also Blaze Heatnix is a phoenix who lives in a volcano so he gets a similar excuse to Fire Field. He has no excuse for his dumbass name and goddamn awful long-ass unfun level though. F-Zero X also had an Xpansion Kit that lets players make their own tracks and adds new music just for custom tracks. One of these is a bomb-ass rock remix of Rainbow Road from Mario Kart 64.

And only X6 fully embraced the "Rock" in Rockman, X4 remains mostly techno (only Zero's Opening Stage and Magma Dragoon are rather heavy, and even then they lag behind X6, X5 is also rather mild and electronic, X6 and X8 are the only ones who fully embrace the genre as a whole)

The people who made the GX soundtrack have nothing to do with Metroid Prime. GX was composed by SEGA Amusement Vision people (also worked on Yakuza) and the pilot themes were composed by daiki kasho, who is known for Gran Turismo.

My theory is that this is just a fun little appetizer Nintendo threw together while they prepare the main course; a brand new, fully-fledged F-Zero game. That, or they really are just testing the waters, in which case we might be in a spot of trouble given how many people refuse to play the game due to how disappointed the announcement made them feel.

It's frustrating how often I notice easy KO opportunities that streamers pass up but then when I'm playing I never notice the guy blinking and smoking right in front of me until he's in the pit zone.
