He was also the project leader for the kid icarus and metroid series as well as most other random gameboy titles nintendo made This game was a launch title for the gameboy, so of course it's a little awkward as they were still working out the limits to the hardware.

GRAND DAD jokes aside, I'd really like to see more foreign lands based Mario stages in later games. Sure, we got Bowser's Grand Japanese Wedding Fortress, New Donk City, and Mexican Sand Kingdom in Odyssey, but I'd like to see stages like Grecian ruins, an Old West ghost town or an actual mining operation like the ones in Mario Kart, an Indian royal garden jungle or even another southern China mountains stage, or something based on real life geographical wonders like the Rainbow Mountains of Peru. If there was anything I loved about Super Mario Land, Sarasaland was definitely more standout and varied in levels and stages.

Mario goes to Egypt, travels by submarine and by plane, and fights vampires. Yare Yare Daze...

I remember playing this while I was riding along in my dad's truck. He used to be a long-distance truck delivery worker and best times in my childhood was going along with him, on his job trips that could last for several days. I remember this game being kinda hard, but not the hardest Nintendo game of course. Didnt like it all that much, original Super Mario Land feels very crude. It had it's own stankiness, which I think was partly because it was such early Gameboy title. Graphics became a bit more detailed and sophisticated on Gameboy titles later on, but not as much- just developers learning to use the system. I don't understand that idea that this is "baby title" as in terms of difficulty. It is simpler game compared to Super Mario Bros 3 for example, but the old game design is prevalent here too - you don't have fancy graphics or big multi-dimensional environments - so the length for the title is made through it's difficulty. While being simpler, most GB titles still followed this idea. Try beating original Gargoyle's Quest- I never could. :D Anyway: thanks for the great content and bringing out the Scandinavian personality Joel. Totally relate to introversion and self-depricating humor as a Finn. Stay cool peeps.

I have been watching The Gaming Historian since about the time he first started the channel, and it has evolved over the years, but he still adheres to the same level of quality that he always has with each video. I do like how he bases his video scheduling on quality, not quantity. Yes, it sucks that I have to wait for each installment, but it's well worth the wait.

Wario Land 1 is my favorite Gameboy game, and one of my all time favorite platformers. The rise in quality between Mario Land 1, Mario Land 2, and Wario Land is astronomical.

Super Mario Land was released in April 1989 whilst Desert Rain was released 2 years after. I guess Iced Earth are huge fans of Mario.

Super Mario Land - 1989 Desert Rain - Iced Earth - 1991

I remember playing this game well before I played the original SMB: I literally reset the game in the last stage of the first world every time I lost the super ball because I thought you _had_ to have it to beat the boss. I had no clue you could just jump over him. Should have been a natural conclusion, possibly _first_ conclusion, to come to, but both of my braincells combined couldn't puzzle that out out.

Then 30 minutes later he gets maximum amount of lives AGAIN from the bonus game, and AGAIN complains that he didn't get any lives. IS THIS MAN BOTH BLIND AND DEAF? you hear the THREE one ups. you SEE mario climb the ladder to the 3 lives.

I don't think you'll ever read this. Since few comments barely spoke about the actual game of Super Mario Land, and most comments focused on the sequels, I want to tell you a million things. Daisy is absolutely fabulous, she is one of my favorite characters, and unfortunately she never got to be part of the sequels until her return as a regular in Mario Tennis/Mario Party 3 for the N64. I never played Super Mario Land so I can't comment about the actual gameplay, but I know a significant number of information. The whole place is called Sarasaland, and Daisy is the ruler/queen/empress of it. Sarasaland, the word 'sarasa' refers to an import of Indian textiles traded by Portuguese sailors during the Edo period, which was foreign/exotic at the time. The first world of Sarasaland is Birabuto, in Japanese it is "Piraputo'" which is a portmanteau of the Japanese words "PIRAmiddo" for pyramid and "EjiPUTO" for Egypt, that's why there are pyramids and other Egyptian iconography. The next world is Muda, based on the Bermuda Islands, and essentially yes, the Bermuda Triangle, that's why there is a UFO at the start of the level. The next world is Easton, based on the Easter Island sculptures. And lastly, the last world/queendom, is Chai, based on China, that's why there is Jiangshi, the hopping vampires from Chinese folklore.

Joel, you really should play the Wario Land games. The first three are among the best offerings on the Game Boy, really unique and full of personality. God I wish they'd make a new one. I'm sick of "le wacky fart may may" Wario, I want my goofy, macho Indiana Jones back.
