The only reason he's even scared of them is because his space-alien xenophobia compelled him to steal their lamp (which is literally just a lamp that glows and nothing else) in the first place, what's funnier though is that if you go back to their cabin after it's finished they have 2 posters that show what they look like, without spoiling anything I think knowing what he's being harassed by makes the situation 10x funnier

Gotta say, I'm mildly bummed that the lamp/treehouse alien redemption arc moment wasn't included. Even if Joel understandably cut most of the "lore-related" moments to focus on the greater experience, his reaction after being fed space pudding and seeing the aliens' posters was straight up a line from an anime/cartoon after two rivals have to bury the hatchet XD "We're not _friends!"_

Something I like about this game is how surprisingly popular it is, even outside Joel's streaming bubble. A ton of creators on here are making videos about this game, sometimes gathering half a million views. What makes it even more special is the fact this game only exists due to Joel, his reactions to Signal Simulator, and the developer having no interest in updating the game anymore. Another thing to throw in the pile of stuff on the internet that Joel (directly or indirectly) has had a huge impact on, even if it's usually not super noticeable for most internet users.

My favorite underrated thing about this video is that you can see the game itself improving over time. At the start of the video it's clearly a fairly unpolished project, with obvious placeholder assets like the garage door "button" and not much to do outside the core gameplay loop, but then by the end it's a genuinely solid and fleshed-out game with a bunch of original content and unique visuals (the Pyramid event genuinely made my jaw drop when I saw it).

@@matthewfinger2381 MrDrNose tried to add a cleaning part to the game, as you saw in the video at some point the base becomes insanely dirty and messy, which isn't a bad idea, but there is so much trash around the base and the dirt on the walls resets if you load you save. You can clean it all with a mop and trash bags but he made those really expensive and he nerfed how much you can get from selling trash, which was the perfect trade off. So overall it's very tedious and annoying if you just want a clean base for 2 seconds, in all honesty it doesn't feel very thought out and a lot of people got mad. A new update has since been released so I'll edit this comment if any of this has changed or not

I love how throughout the video Joel becomes less isolated to his base. It went from any slight noises made him pause the game all the way to having face to face battles with aliens over a lamp. Best character development I’ve ever seen. I wish he was a real person.

The story arcs of joel’s votv journey: part one 0:00 - paranoia arc: no tangible threat is apparent; joel is paranoid and fights with his own thoughts… and the mannequins 25:38 - not alone arc: joel knows he’s not alone anymore, but hasn’t seen anything yet. He is even more paranoid, and is terrified when he sees something extraterrestrial 45:12 - not safe arc: joel decides to go find aliens in the woods, and he does just that. Joel now knows he’s not only not alone, but not safe. 1:07:37 - maxwell/ariral arcs begin: Joel begins his quest to find maxwell, and comes into contact with the arirals, his first true antagonist 1:41:33 - end of ariral arc: joel successfully secures the lamp, and after one more confrontation, the arirals leave. 1:52:55 - end of maxwell arc: joel finally finds Maxwell and takes him home. No new major threat is present, and mostly peaceful times are here. 2:07:30 - revenge of the mannequins arc: the mannequins have been pushed too far and plot their revenge against joel, but fail. A very short arc 2:13:54 - the yellow orbs arc: joel comes into contact with his most powerful antagonist; the yellow orbs. 2:40:17 - the pyramid event: the aliens come to save Joel from the yellow orbs. The forest is safe once again. End of part one.

Hella enjoyed the streams and the video and I'm grateful that Joel took time out of his life to compile and edit all of this footage but when it comes to the game itself I'm honestly disappointed. there were so many goofy/meme-ish things in it that kept getting added in every update that slowly but surely made it lose its identity over time. it made it lose that "you're alone in a forest with possible extra terrestrials/slow burn horror" feel and made it feel more and more like a "Garry's mod fangame with hey remember this or look at this reference/wacky creatures" game. don't get me wrong, this isn't a bad thing, and I understand that this game was pretty much made for Joel but the direction in which the feel of the game is heading in is not what I was expecting, none the less great video

this game is so awesome, I love that it's gone from "signal simulator tribute" to a repository for a ton of weird alien encounters, it's actually kind of funny how the main "gameplay" barely feels relevant anymore and now it's more about finding some bizarre formation in the middle of the forest and digging up a jar of plutonium

the constant dynamic of VOTV's entire concept being built around one of joel's biggest fears and the devs constantly lurking noting down what to scare/troll joel with in the next update made this out to be one of the most engrossing viewing experiences i've ever had in my 8-9 years of watching vinesauce content i'm glad its cut down to its best moments from so many hours worth of streams but i'm also sad i never experienced the thrill of any of this live
