9:30 Dithering is a technique where you make checkerboard-like patterns with two colors to simulate a third color (or a gradient transition from one color to another). It's mostly forgotten these days when we aren't stuck with "max 4 colors per sprite" limits and the displays are much sharper - CRTs would actually smoothly blend the colors together so you wouldn't see the dithering patterns.

Simpsons Wrestling might be trash, but can we just take a moment to appreciate how good that cell shading is, and how true the characters look to their show counterparts? How did they get the playstation to render all that extra geometry, or is it some kind of masking technique? We'll never know.

At least the majority of these have _something_ going on in the gameplay department, as opposed to The Sniper "I Can't Believe It's Not Just a Credits Reel" 2

don't you just miss being a kid and being able to enjoy some of the worst games. I remember having a lot of fun playing simpsons wrestling with my brother as a kid. We had a moded ps1 that had so many games on it yet me and my brother would always play the obscure and bad games and we had so much fun doing it.

Holy crap he actually played Rascal. I think I left a comment recommending it in the first vid of this series. Yeah, man the worlds had me intrigued as a kid, but I still found the game overall frustrating. Grew up to absolutely HATE it and even call it the worst PS1 game I ever played. Strange to think the devs behind Wipeout had a hand in it.

Rascal has a lot of potential, like, for instance the time travel mechanics, like when you go to a level, then clear it, then go back, you go to a modernized version thereof (i.e the pirate ship becomes a shipwreck, the Aztec temple becomes a lumberyard, and the Spaghetti Western town becomes a movie studio). Sounds like Traveler's Tales or Pysgnosis must've been working on a tight schedule there.

Rascal for ps1 is funny because one of the programmers of the game has talked about it publicly on his KZfaq channel (GameHut) and said they had a Mario 64 style movement system that worked great, but some higher-up had just played Tomb Raider and told them to make the controls shitty because it'll sell better.

You know what's weird? How PS1 did the dualshock stick craze, but there wasn't many games that made use of both sticks. Hell, I think there are a lot of games that advertised Dualshock Support and not really working.

Rascal had so much potential with the different time periods, definite candidate for a proper remaster to fix the controls and camera.

While chat was _technically_ correct that the "giant pixels" on PlayStation are called Aliasing not Dithering, the contemporary name for PS1's specific subspecies of aliasing has always been "Jaggies". Also does it appear to anyone else that Ski Air Mix 25:17 appears to be a reskin of CoolBoarders 2 with the same engine and very few changed assets? That's one way to make a budget game.

I met a developer from Rascal at my university graduate showcase (I did a programming course). The entire dev team knew the game sucked but the whole thing was a budget issue, they blew 9/10ths of their budget on getting Jim Henson Workshop to design a majority of the characters in-game leaving an absolute pittance to everything else, and that's why you got what you see here.

I don't know who was saying that Rascal was a good game, cause it really isn't. I mean, if it wasn't for the tank-controls, then it might have been decent, if not good. And I know that it wasn't _their_ decision to have tank-controls, but they are here and not for the better. Not that the controls are the only bad part, clearly. It's a shame, for sure, but the people upset that it's labelled as 'bad' are in denial. I'd recommend the Nitro Rad video on it for a good review.

Vanishing Point is a racing game which has vehicle handling that was best described by Mark from Classic Game Room. Essentially he said that every vehicle handles like a Lincoln Town Car that hasn't had an inspection in 20 years. I think that is quite accurate, however I am a masochist and I actually enjoy the driving in this game for some strange reason. It doesn't help that it features some rather unusual vehicles. This is probably the only racing game that features an officially licensed Mercury Sable station wagon. The driving dynamics are exaggerated to the point where driving accuracy is key, as well as keeping consistent speed and avoiding traffic and other racers. There is a graphically superior version on the Dreamcast to consider if you'd like to check out this obscure racer.

I like the intro, but those glitches only existed in old vhs, and ps1 screen recorders doesn't have that problem, so only because of that, the intro is ruined.

I don't know if it's because of the critical acclaim of Super Smash Bros and/or Power Stone, but there just came a point where a lot of cartoon franchises decided to have arena fighters in hopes to either sell well or turn out to be actual good games. The Simpsons had one, along with Tom and Jerry, Billy and Mandy, PowerPuff Girls, (which Vinny actually played at one point; it was god awful, probably worse than the Simpsons game) and Shrek SuperSlam, which unironically got into the competitive fighting game scene.

According to one of devs for Rascal they didn't want to use Tank controls but Publisher insisted since Tomb Raider was the hot thing at the time. Rayman 2 also nearly was saddled with tank controls because of Tomb Raider.

When I was a kid, my grandma from Italy showed me the Simpsons Wrestling game and said I can borrow it if I want... I actually kinda liked it? Even tho the fighting just boiled down to spamming the same move over and over again. As a child, you're just happy about any game you get, I guess

Vanishing Point does not deserve to mentioned along these. Ok, it's a bit budget style and has weird controls/physics but in overall, it's a decent title that interestingly combines street racing and classic, time-based rally rules. It has neat music too. :)

Whatever emulator Vinny is using seems unable to cope with games that use lower horizontal resolutions to improve performance. The "1:1" setting he mentioned probably means "each pixel of the game's screen equals one pixel on yours", as opposed to stretching or squashing to maintain a 4:3 ratio like the actual console would. That's good if the emulator can only do nearest-neighbor upscaling and you want to avoid unevenly doubled pixels, but not if you want to accurately match the shape of the screen.

The simpsons wrestling is one of the best ps1 games out there. Just because most of you saying it’s awful are incapable of being good at the game, doesn’t mean it’s awful, which it isn’t.

I CANT BELIEVE VANISHING POINT IS THE GAME I USED TO SPEND HOURS ON END ON, IVE SPENT YEARS TRYING TO REMEMBER WHAT THIS GAME WAS, THE LAST TIME I TOUCHED IT WAS WHEN I WAS 5, I CANT BELIEVE ID FIND IT ON VINESAUCE OF ALL PLACES this used to be my forza horizon 4, it was often really realistic and i was always surprised at how good it was and the several modes it had were very fun
