The smoke is in the shape of an E because that's the sort of sound it makes when you drift. A high pitched 'rubber on tarmac' squealing. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

That pit around 12:40 must be the reason for Luigi's Mansion's existence. He was just in that pit for years and his mind was reeling. Then the Mansion formed into a reality to him. In other words, he fell in a hole and went insane.

Here's a satisfactory explanation for the E smoke: Onomatopoeia. Same reason why there's the "Boing!" and "Whirrrrrr" sound effects, too.
