In case anyone didn't catch it the radio before the boss said, "I'm taking all those 'logs' they keep throwing out. And I'm nailing them together." and the number 731 appeared on a wall. This is actually reference to the really disturbing behavior of Japanese military unit 731, which performed unethical as balls experiments on prisoners in WW2. They called there victims "logs" in reports both for plausible deniability and they were burned afterward. So... Specimen 9 is a horrible monster spawned from tortured victims and medical experiments in WW2 that nails the "logs" together.
