Honestly, the fact that after the timer was up you don't immediately lose but instead have to deal with the anxiety of escaping from some unknown threat that just appeared within the level is what gets me most. Roguelikes that spawn a super-enemy that hunts you down after a certain time spent in a level have that same effect on me.

@@Koopastomper if you put the video at 2x speed, you can... kinda hear it? They've definitely changed the melody up quite a bit, and only sampled one part of the song, but it does *kinda* sound like Coffin Dance when you speed it up.

For those who don't know, Eversion is an oldie but goodie in that genre.

It has no thought process and is merely there to take, and take, and take, and take, and take

@@jefftastic Kudos on the entire thing. Your restraint with the creepy aspects make it all the more believable and as such wayyyy more spooky than other video game creepypasta stuff. This romhack is a golden example of "less is more" when it comes to horror.

Honestly, the romhacks that are just weird unsettling and slightly tweaked to feel creepy are my favourites, these games that go all out with the bloody imagery and stuff are just boring.

For me personally, the discomfort it gave me when I played it blind was having locations I'm very much familiar be similar enough to identify it as Peach's Castle or Bob-omb Battlefield, but changed in substantial ways that drastically alter the mood. Even on the first boot where everything seems the most normal outside the castle, seeing the trees missing along with the stone platform for the 120 star cannon was very early sign that things were gonna go wrong

From the looks of it the game pulled an infinite staircase and simply either teleported mario to a lower point at the slope as he kept turning, or unloaded what was behind him only to reload it in front of him, thus the grabbable ledge can never be reached.
