I know the inspiration was mostly secret of mana, but some of it reminds very much of megaman and bass on gba.

I imagine the language barrier also played a major role - the script was in English, and so the animators had at best a translated version, which probably left out important information and context, as well as pacing and tone. So they were animating blindly for the most part.

Maybe not poorly animated on effort alone; but their constant animating on 1s at least on the CD-I games definately isn't the best for workload or timing. There's a good reason why most things in animation are done on 2s and 3s; not only it's less frames, you can manipulate the weight of actions instead of everything feeling like jello.

Eh, I don’t blame anyone for calling them bad, maybe not from a technical standpoint, I sure wouldn’t know how to animate like that, but the end result is undeniably bizarre, The way camera angles shift, the way characters move, character designs being really weird. It’s like the voice acting, from a lot of angles it’s not that bad, but in the ways it counts it is really bad. But that might just be how bizarre the dialogue is or the direction of the actors.

As an animation wingnut I'm a huge defender of the cdi cutscenes.. like yeah, there's some bizarre pauses and timing in some spots, but some sequences are just insanely detailed and animated on ones entirely. Zooming in and out of a character is so fucking difficult to do, drawing hands is extremely difficult to do, and both are done in the games cutscenes nonstop. Some sequences in both cdi games are actually insanely well animated, I think that one robot-looking dude comes to mind, shit is so geometric and buttery smooth. Its really interesting to see fully animated fmv in a game so weird and old, and clearly it has appeal even with all its inconsistency and jank. Nothing will make you realize that the 'style' is really really difficult until you try to make your own 'cdi style' cutscenes.. I've been messing around with the style a bit more these days (Im stupidly attempting to make a few scenes from The Room into fully believable cdi cutscenes and it is fucking mental how many frames it takes to 'look right'). Its why some scenes in Arnette are clearly utilizing some shortcuts like using a 2.5d (3d?) looking rig in some shots to get some of that zoom in and zoom out motion (idk who that animator is but kudos to you, super cool technique I really love it) This rant didnt add anything of value, but for sure the russian animation influence is felt... that iconic linear pose to pose movement is very very Russian and very nostalgic to me as someone who studied and binged a lot of that stuff in my baby art career lol

I love Vinny's music talks, the overlap between video game fans and music fans is pretty small, so it's rare I get to enjoy both at once

Patch fixes my only (small) gripe with the game: now the NPC introductory cutscene plays the first time you talk to em even if you have the item.

@@masternorg Yup, that was much needed. I'm glad they fixed that so we get a chance to see demon girl's intro cutscene on stream.

@@masternorg My favourite part is that it's still optional; you can create an empty text file in the game's installation directory named "sceneskip.txt" and it'll switch back to v1.0.0's cutscene behaviour. Nice for when you're on your umpteenth run of the game and you're practicing speeding through it as quickly as possible.

The game is incredibly charming, even outside of familiarity with the source material. I kinda love all these weirdo characters and this universe, even removed from the greater context of the Zelda CD-i games. I hope other people feel similarly.

As someone that doesn't know anything about Zelda CD-i, other than some memes, I think the characters and wacky animations are super fun, also the sprites and backgrounds for the games are extremely well made so it's clear that this game goes beyond the "haha remember funny bad old game" gimmick and a lot of passion was put into it, of course passion projects don't always make money but I hope everyone involved in this is satisfied with the results :)

What helped with the gameplay replication, was that the dev's previous work was remastering the CDI 2d Zelda games. That remastered CDI engine was most likely used to make arzette.
