Just as a correction, the translation for Sim City 64 is done by ozidual, and F-Zero X Expansion Kit is done by Zoinkity. I have only done the translations for all Mario Artist games. And now, two little trivias about Mario Artist Paint Studio: Did you know this title was developed in the UK? Also, the crust on the stamps and backgrounds, it's like they're JPEGs, right? That's because they are JPEG files, now you know :)

38:08 Even the N64 version of F-Zero X has a real guitar in its music. However, the N64 version had the whole soundtrack in mono to compensate. The N64DD version upgrades the entire soundtrack to stereo and adds a few more songs, including this version of Rainbow Road!

While the disc system doesn't itself improve the console's specs, space issues were a huge deal with the original cartridges, especially for textures. The reason so many N64 games have that flat or gradient look (and why so many cross-platform games looked wretched on the N64) was because of the extreme limitations developers had to work with WRT texture sizes. Mario Artist basically could not have existed on a cartridge.

I remember seeing old Japanese magazines about Sega developing a FDD for Mark III / Master System, as a Disk System's rival. Such thing was never materialized until the Sega Saturn era, where a FDD was made as an alternative to the Internal Memory / Backup RAM Cartridge to save games, being completely off from his original idea.

All I know of Doshin the Giant are the trophies and their descriptions from Melee. Also that he looks like the Oof Guy from Roblox. Also, did NO ONE in chat tell Vinny that the Rainbow Road track is in the base F-Zero X for the regular ol' N64 game? That is absolutely NOT a 64DD exclusive track.

It's funny how a basic 3d Sim City game was never really released elsewhere, either isometric or went off the damn rails by concept...Even the successors are so fundamentally different; Cities Skylines is more meant for people who would have been building elaborate model train cities in their basements had they been born 30 years prior.

StarCraft 64 was my shit back in the day, I played the game almost daily back in '00 - '02 I bet if it came out on the DD (and the DD was actually sold here) the Map editor probably would've came with the game.

Rainbow Road described in-game as 'psychedelic experience', which proves beyond all doubt Rainbow Road is literally an Acid/mushroom trip. I've "had experiences" with that stuff and the first night I closed my eyes and travelled down rainbow roads generated by my brain.

I think the 64DD would’ve done better if it came out in like ‘97 or ‘98 as opposed to 1999 when it did come out in Japan. Because in 1999, not only was the ps2 announced, but the n64 was just being pummeled by the ps1

In the time between then they released F-Zero GX and now HAL Laboratories has released eleven Kirby games. Twelve if you include Kirby's Dream Collection. They've also released seven main series Pokemon games. That proves Nintendo's priorities lie with the children. Nintendo doesn't give a shit about teenagers and adults. They'll hand off responsibilities to third parties like Redout and Fast RMX.

@@VulpesHilarianus "Nintendo's priorities lie with the children." Meanwhile, Fire Emblem, Metroid, and Zelda exist... The reality is Nintendo sees F-Zero as redundant given that they have Mario Kart. And having played F-Zero as a youngun, I personally agree with them. It's boring imo. The first game was just a mode 7 tech demo, and that's what the entire franchise feels like.

Except Mario Kart is still aimed at a younger audience. F-Zero also has the benefit of having a much higher skill floor because of how the way the Zeroes themselves handle and the series' philosophy of track design. wipeOut doesn't compete with Crash Team Racing or Gran Turismo in sales on the PS4 for example. Because while on the surface the games may seem similar just because they're racing games, wipeOut is more arcadey, Crash Team Racing is more of a party game, and Gran Turismo is a simulator. In parallels with Nintendo, F-Zero is arcadey, Kirby Air Ride and Mario Kart are party games, and... Hmm, I don't think Nintendo's ever done a simulator. Anyways, F-Zero started an entire sub-genre of reflex based racing combat games that was copied by everything from the aforementioned wipeOut series to Xtreme G Racing and even the shameful Kinetica. It's a sub-genre F-Zero created that has died out. And it's a sub-genre that F-Zero can bring back to life. But Nintendo continues to focus on the kids and neglect properties that would bring in quite a bit of money in their own right, especially now that way more people know about them thanks to the internet.

Saying Nintendo is exclusively babi gaems is simply untrue. "Crash Team Racing is more of a party game" The skill cap for CTR is higher than that for wipeout "Hmm, I don't think Nintendo's ever done a simulator." Pilot wings and Animal Crossing. Realistic racing games are boring. "F-Zero started an entire sub-genre of reflex based racing combat games" Not really. Out Run, Rad Racer, and Hang-On all predate it by several years. And even then, later games like Road Rash, Daytona USA, the Crus'n series, and even more recent titles like Burnout and Blur all did it better, albeit not in futuristic rocket cars...

fzero x was one of my favorite childhood games, i remeber going so fast on a map with a bunch of boost tiles the game bugged and i flew right up to the sky and died. this game was so cool, the music was good, it was so brutal and i loved you could straight up kill other racers. always wondered what happened to the franchise

Did F-Zero X not sell well in the US? I can't imagine why Nintendo wouldn't have released this in the US. They could have made an F-Zero X 2 with the track editor, the DD levels and the Joker Cup. If it was a space issue and they couldn't fit everything on a single cartridge then they could have cut some of the levels from the OG F Zero X and replaced them with some of the DD and Joker levels.

Hot Take: I care about F-Zero about as much as Nintendo does. It was a cool way to show off mode 7, and that's about it to me. It's a very bare-bones racing game that only really is memorable for how it looks rather than how it plays.
