Liverpool's Smith was one of the hardest men in english football and so was recognised by Vinnie jones in his football's hardest men show. Other picks were United's Bryan Robson and Nobby Stiles, Macmahon, Chopper harris, of course himself and others

Tommy was my hero, when I played football as a defender I always tried to play like Tommy, hard, fast and tough with an elegant touch. A true legend. I only got to watch him once back in March 1968 when Liverpool played Wolves at Molineux , it was a draw 1-1. I was a 13 year old boy and will never forget the game. Roger Hunt scored the equaliser in the second half. A memory I will never forget.............

As hard as a freight train, but a class act too. One or two of his tackles may have been about an hour late but generally speaking he was a fair and honest guy. The sign of a true hard man is that they can take it as well as dish it out, and Tommy was one of those guys. Long may he reign,

To be fair to Tommy Smith, most of the clips of him here, apart from a couple at the end which were filth tackles, showed a player who could read the game very well and a firm but fair tackler. I was born in 1970 so I was very young when he was in his prime during the early to mid 70's and can't remember a great deal about him but from what I've seen and the bits I can remember, I think the thug label was a bit harsh.... Yes he could put himself about a bit if needed but he was also a very good footballer.

Tommy was a great player for us, but ironic they talk about the 65 Cup final. Smith didn't break anyone's collar bone, unlike Leeds Collins who busted Gerry Byrne's in the first 10 minutes. Gerry played the rest of the game (no subs allowed) with a broken collar bone AND contributed to the winning goal. THAT'S a hard man. RIP Tom & Gerry :)

Fantastic anecdote from Jimmy Case, himself a legend in a tackle. Jimmy relayed an account of his debut for Liverpool against Burnley. He was detailed to mark Burnley’s star winger Leighton James. Just before the kick off Jimmy says to Tommy, “Tommy, what do you want me to do with Leighton? to which Tommy screamed back to him..”You flick him up into the air and I’ll boot the fucker into row Z” ....Irreplaceable.

Tommy actually played 639 times for us in all competitions. Tommy's treatment in his later years by the govt. is another in the long list of reasons why Liverpool fans hate the 'establishment'. Whilst suffering from Arthritis, plastic knees, elbows and hip; combating the early stages of dementia - Tommy took a penalty kick for charity at the half time break during the FA cup final between us and Utd. The result of which the bloody Govt. stopped his disability allowance!

Isn't that the beauty of the game - the free-kick- cos you don't have to pay. But if you get a free -kick from 30/35 yards u can blast that in the net. Also, are you suggesting that Tommie Smith dived?

Neither of whom were right-backs. We weren't exactly spoilt for choice in that position when Smith was in his prime- Keith Newton tended to get the nod, probably because he was conceived by Ramsey to be a more cultured player.
@rolfwang5776
@rolfwang5776 5 жыл бұрын
Smith was though, no doubt about that. Sometimes he met players who were tougher than him. Steve Powell at Derby County was pone of them. Many people think that being a thug like Vinnie Jones has something to do with being tough as a footballer. Which is completely wrong. One of the toughest and best players ever was Dave Mackay. No player was tougher than him and at the same time he was fair.

Every team from the 70s had at least one hard man that would make Vinny Jones look like a complete wimp. Grabbing someone's nuts does not make you a hard man, just makes you a bit of a perv. If Jones had done that to a team mate of Tommy Smith's he'd have ended up in intensive care for a month.

90 minutes of play and so few points ever scored.. suggest an overhaul of the sport. The 'objective' point scoring format should be shelved in favour of a 'subjective' adjudication. The goal box is eliminated and instead, a panel of judges assess artistic merit. The positioning of the arms and overall body balance (as foot is put to ball) determine a judge's score card at the end of each half.. ribbons in the colour formations of the respective clubs could be twirled about (as in women's gymnastic floor routines). Commentators would enlighten the viewer as to the significance of the "lovely siwky touch as he's gone on to kick the bawl magnificently". The "action" could be musically interpreted as the fans sing from the terraces..
