My dad has had an inground sprinkler system at his house since he bought it, the previous owners put it in way before that. This particular head was removed from the system, as it unfortunately is no longer functional. There are many more heads around that I might get as time goes on. They are brass (it appears), and the riser pipes are metal!
Man, they used to know how to build these things! If that system were taken care of over the years, it would still be in service today. I know one head didn't look so great, and a shed was built over another one, so it will never function again.

Being a local company, I had to check into it, and they are still around. That’s a nice sprinkler head. Really chooches water!

That's great the are still around! I happened to check Home Depot's website and they still make a variety like this. It's green plastic but has those notches in it. Does have a brass nozzle though. I'm definitely going to grab at least one more of these next I'm over there. And it so happens I need to bring my metal detector there also, so that might be a fun treasure hunt.

One of my friend's houses in my old neighborhood had a mister head like this! And a couple of stationary ones for one of their misters zones. Those heads though just did the half circle mist. Wouldn't be surprised though if they have since been replaced.

These were awsome heads. As it turns out I looked online at sprinklers heads at Depot this morning due to a different incident on zone 1 of my system, and they actually still sell sprinklers like this--sort of. They are of course green plastic now, but with a brass head, and they have those same 2 cutouts on the top.

That head looks really old. Still works great for its age. Most heads are plastic and get brittle after a number of seasons. As far as the hose reel. There are only two types I found on Amazon. The battery operated one which is a waste of time because you come out to roll the hose up and forget you have to charge the battery. “Saving the landfill”. The other one is retractable, which is nice since it does not use water or a battery, but you can’t replace the hose. The hose is permanently in the unit.

Yes, has to be from the 60s or 70s for sure. Don't know precisely when. I wish there were an old timer that could tell a bit more about this. Yep, I've seen both of those types. No thanks. I have a replacement, video Saturday.

Really neat sprinkler Jay. Cool to see that. My Grandpa had a Toro automatic system. I think it was installed some time in the 70s. I remember seeing the heads when I would mow his lawn for him. The controller was in his basement work room near the water meter.

Nice. xjoe81x had a vintage system complete with an electro-mechanical timer for the system. That system of course fell into disrepair and was completely replaced. However, he saved the old timer for me, which I still have. I hope there are a few "time capsule" homes that actualyl still have this stuff operational, that would be awesome to see.

This reminds me of a very similar system. My grandmother and my grandfather used to have. The sprinkler heads were similar, but they were not exactly the same. They would pop out and pop-up just like these. But I don't think they were the same manufacturer, but they were very similar. So that's what kind of brought that memory Into the front of my mind.

I have 2 other vintage inground heads that are similar but not the same as well, they were from different manufacturers.

@jaykay18 Sounds about right. That system was completely manual that she had pretty similar to what you described.

@@vectorcollector4893 Haven't seen a manual system in a very long time, I knew of only one other one, and that one was a "handyman special".

@jaykay18 Now that I think about it, this one kind of looks like it well, at least it did. At my grandparents.

Weathermatic’s been a great company since 1945. With the orifices unclogged this sprinkler will operate indefinitely just like it did from the factory. The body of the sprinkler is bronze, but that smooth surface on top will polish to almost a mirror finish on the weathermatics if you want that. The nozzle is yellow brass. They clean up nicely, too. I did a short history on the company on my channel a few weeks back if you care to take a look. Very cool you have this from your folk’s system.

Thanks so much for the info! I will definitely check the video out! I am sure this would polish up real nice, but at the same time I'd hate to ruin that kind of patina...

@@jaykay18 I totally get it. Some folks do not like that I try to make some of these antiques look new. Not the valuable ones, but because I’m telling their history I try to make them look more like they would have when they were taken out of the box.

I asked you about that a month ago, you said they were in your shed somewhere or gave them to me. I don't remember your giving them to me as I would have definitely made at least a video if not different ones on them. I vaguely seem to remember there were a good 2 or 3 of them.

In the old days, the sprinter valves were on the ground and you had to manually turn it on and off usually with a long handle to turn the valve.

I swear when I was a kid, there was a cartoon where they showed a "key" for the sprinkler as you speak of. While this was sometime in the 1980s, most of what was on TV was recycled 1960s stuff, so that sounds totally legitimate.

I have planned for a long time to tell an old war story about that system, but most of it was included in this video. I do have 2 other videos to be released sometime of more vintage sprinklers.

Dont make em like they used to. If you have a ultra sonic cleaner thats big enough maybe put the head in it and see if it unclogs the holes.

Hey.. that look like the head that was at xJoe81x’s house with the abandoned system that got replaced in the front yard! Also looks like the one head in the corner of the side of the driveway by his current zone 7… interesting!

Yes, we are looking into the whereabouts of the old heads, if they are even still around. His zone 7 head needed to be replaced, and the head he bought has a similar spray pattern.
